a Message FroM the presideNt & Ceo
By the time you read this, we will be gathered in Houston,
Texas for our 2013 HACR programs, which culminate with
our 21st Annual Symposium.
We are excited to be in Houston this year; a city whose
population is more than 40 percent Hispanic and
where some of America’s most admired and respected
companies call home. The Hispanic community in Houston
has welcomed us with open arms and we are especially
grateful for the support we received from our Houston
Honorary Host Committee. We are honored that Target
Corporation will once again serve as the Host of not only
our Annual Symposium, but the Corporate Directors
Summit™ and Corporate Executives Forum™ annual
meetings, which celebrates its fifth anniversary.
This year we also celebrate the seventh class of our HACR
Young Hispanic Corporate Achievers™ program and the
HACR CEO Roundtable, the sixth year of our Corporate
Directors Summit™ program, and third year of our
Corporate Achievers Summit.
During the Annual Symposium, HACR will release the
findings of our ground-breaking Hispanic Employee
Resource Group (ERG) study; share with the audience a
sneak preview of the sequel to our award-winning, short
documentary film Insider Game; and participants will be
able to hear from Arturo Vargas,
Executive Director, National
Association of Latino Elected
and Appointed Officials (NALEO)
on the significant role Latinos
played in the 2012 Presidential
election and from several
C-Suite level executives.
Participants will also have the opportunity to network with
our Board of Directors, meet with our new team members,
and network with hundreds of corporate colleagues from
around the United States who support HACR’s Mission: to
advance the inclusion of Hispanics in Corporate America
at a level commensurate with our economic contributions.
On behalf of our coalition and corporate members, we
thank you for your support!
Sincerely,

(HACR) is one of the leading advocacy organizations
in the U.S. and has been committed to advancing the
inclusion of Hispanics in Corporate America, since
1986. As part of its mission, HACR established the CEO
Roundtable, which provides a forum for the highest-
ranking executives of HACR’s corporate member
companies to discuss best practices related to inclusive
employment and retention strategies. The conversation
also focuses on increasing Hispanic Consumer Market
brand loyalty, as well as diversity and inclusion in the
areas of procurement, philanthropy, and governance.
Leading the conversation as the HACR CEO Roundtable’s
moderator is Emmy® Award-winning journalist, Norma
García. Current news anchor for Noticiero Telemundo
Dallas and Noticiero Telemundo San Antonio, Ms. García
has a long-standing relationship with HACR, engaging
CEO Roundtable participants in sharing with the Annual
Symposium participants their company’s commitment
to Hispanic inclusion, current business challenges, and
their personal stories of success.
“The HACR CEO Roundtable is a fundamental forum
for CEOs to provide key points of views on areas that
require improvement in the corporate sector,” said Ms.
García. “Attendees can learn insights straight from the
source on best practices, including minority growth,
mentorship programs, and employee visibility. The more
representation we have at the top, the more avenues it
creates for Latinos to get there.”
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’

García’s broadcasting career and journalistic endeavors,
awarding her 11 Emmy® Awards. Ms. García has covered
major world-news events, including the 2004 Olympic

The Congressional Hispanic
Leadership Institute (CHLI) is
committed to advancing the Hispanic
community’s diversity of thought and
to encourage economic development
of the Hispanic population in the U.S.
CHLI will continue to promote
diversity and provide opportunities for students, interns,
young professionals, national and international leaders,
to engage in dialogue and share ideas that will benefit the
community. Congressional briefings, our annual Future
Leaders Conference on July 19, our ninth Annual Gala on
May 15, and our second Trade and International Affairs
Symposium in October are some examples of the type of
avenues CHLI uses to promote its mission.
CHLI also offers a variety of internship programs including
The Global Leaders Internship and Fellowship Program,
which consists of three components, public service,
education, and the private sector. Our interns come to
Washington, D.C. to learn from Congressional Leaders
for eight weeks, work in a corporate Government Affairs
office for another eight weeks, and take two Political
Science courses at George Washington University.
The Tuck Business Bridge Program, a partnership with
Dartmouth College and with the support of General
Electric’s Hispanic Forum, provides CHLI two scholarships
to Hispanic students in a Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Math (STEM) track.
The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute First
Generation Fellowship gives a first generation Latino
student attending FIU’s College of Law a $7,500
scholarship which will be matched entirely by FIU, totaling
$15,000 each year, for three years.

LULAC pledges to continue its work in promoting
broadband adoption in underserved Latino communities,
primarily through our partners and our 56 community

of Connect2Compete, a coalition whose main task
is to bring affordable internet access to low-income
communities as well as to provide curriculum that can
help with digital literacy training at home. All Americans
should have access to affordable broadband internet

program that the National Council of La Raza (NCLR)

Latinos in community service, and provides development

“Our mission is to improve opportunities for Hispanic-
Americans, so it is a natural fit for NCLR and our
community affiliates to work with AmeriCorps.
Volunteers in NCLR’s AmeriCorps program meet
vital community needs, gain valuable job skills and
experience, and learn to set goals, communicate, and

President, Programs.
Research indicates that youth who become involved
in national service are more likely to continue to be
involved as adults. NCLR AmeriCorps members typically
serve for one year at local nonprofits, public agencies,
and faith-based organizations. Upon successful
completion of their service, they are eligible to receive
an education award to pursue a college education or

and training, many AmeriCorps alumni are hired by
NCLR affiliates and other nonprofits to work in their
organizations.

Most recently, the GEHF partnered

While the U.S. has a long ways to go in reducing

signs of declining childhood obesity levels for the first
time in approximately 30 years.

Sodexo is sponsoring a
project called “Reflejos de
mi Comunidad: Comida y
Estilo de Vida” that seeks to assess the barriers that
prevent low-income, inner-city Latino youth from eating
healthy and living an active lifestyle. After providing
cameras and training, the photo voice contest asked
participants to portray their own eating and lifestyle
habits.
In November 2012, Sodexo partnered with the National
Council of La Raza (NCLR), Alivio Medical Center, and
Gads Hill Center to display the contributions of local
youth at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago.
In January 2013, the Mexican American Unity Council,
NCLR, ConAgra Foods, and Sodexo joined forces in San
Antonio to host an event showcasing the photo essays
contributed by participants from the local community.
The photo essays highlighted the difficulties faced by
Latino youth including access to healthy foods due to
limited grocery stores and the dangers posed by crime
in some areas. The photo collection will be used in
conjunction with parent engagement classes designed
to teach parents how to promote behavior change that
can result in improved nutritional habits among Hispanic
children, families, and communities.

2012 haCr Cii reCap
The Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility
(HACR) released the results of its 2012 HACR Corporate
Inclusion Index (HACR CII) in early April. The Index is a
core component of HACR’s Corporate Accountability
Strategy. The HACR CII tracks and evaluates Hispanic
inclusion in Fortune 100 companies and HACR corporate
members by focusing on HACR’s four pillars of
corporate social responsibility and market reciprocity:
Employment, Procurement, Philanthropy, and
Governance.
The theme of the 2012 HACR CII focuses on the
importance of Corporate America’s continued
investment in Hispanics and the importance that these
investments have for continued business success.
“On behalf of HACR’s Board of Directors, congratulations
to AT&T for their commitment to Hispanic inclusion,
which is reflected in their 95 rating,” said HACR
President & CEO Carlos F. Orta. “AT&T continues to lead
the telecommunications industry, modeling the way for
their industry and other corporations.”
A total of 126 corporations were invited to participate
in the 2012 HACR CII survey; 55 companies submitted
surveys and were rated for this year’s report. Of the
companies rated, 38 were HACR corporate members, 17
non-members.
Key highlights include:
• Findings indicate that fewer Hispanics are in the
pipeline for upper level executive positions as reflected
in the low-level representation of Hispanics in C-Suites
(.03 percent) and other managerial positions (.68
percent) within the total reported employee base of
participating companies.
• Of the participating companies, 15 percent reported
less than one percent-spend with Hispanic suppliers.
• Average total charitable contributions made by
participants in 2011 equaled $143,652,247, while average
contributions to Hispanic organizations amounted
to only $1,524,485. Thirteen percent of participants
reported less than one percent contributions to Hispanic
organizations.
• Hispanics only held five percent of board seats
among participating companies (29 out of 613 board
members were Hispanic). A similar trend was observed
with executive officer positions, only 90 out of 2,845
executive officer positions were held by Hispanics (three
percent).
New this year to the 2012 HACR CII was the highlight of
industry participation. This year’s survey saw a record
number of participants and some Fortune 100 industrial
classifications were better represented than others.
The commercial banking industry had 100 percent
participation, as all seven companies in this sector
completed the HACR CII this year. Unfortunately, the
petroleum refining and pipelines industries had zero
participation from the 10 companies that make up these
two categories; and, since the inception of the HACR CII,
the organization has yet to secure a participant from
these industries.
The complete 2012 HACR Corporate Inclusion Index
report can be found on HACR’s website, www.hacr.org.
Fortune 100 companies and HACR corporate members
voluntarily submitted the data collected for HACR’s
Corporate Inclusion Index survey.
