DESCRIBE THE PRESENT ANO ORIGINAL (I F KNOWN I PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
This stone stucco house consists of two main units and faces west .
The first unit , on the northern end , is one and one- half stories high, two bays ~~de . A one story shed addition is on the north. On the west a gabled dormer is situated in the center of the slate covered , gable flank roof . South of that is a shed dormer . On the opposite side is another gabled dormer . There is no chimney present now although there had been one at the north end at one time. Windows in this section as well as in the larger unit are replacements , the sashes being one over one. Windows on the north side of the shed addition arc 6/6 , on the east , 9/6 . All windows in both units have louvered shutters.
Inside, the first unit consists of a kitchen and dining room. A fireplace in the dining room has a moulded wood mantle. A door next to this fireplace, now a closet was a shaft for a dumbwaiter, now enclosed . In earlier times, food was prepared in the basement and lifted to the dining room immediately above .
'!'he larger, t 10 story unit is five bays by two with a central through hall. Thia was originally three bays long , the two bays south of the through hall being an extension . The orincipal entrances , in the center bay , have four light transoms . '!'here is no window at the bay on the west facade . Windows on the south gable end are stuccoed over. Attic windows are six lights over six.
Two large , corbeled brick chimneys rise from either side of the central hall on this unit ' s gable flank , slate covered roof .
A three bay porch covers the entrance and its flanking windows on the west facade . The porch has a flat roof with a moulded box cornice . Columns are Roman Doric . On the east facade , the porch is screened in and , as the house is built into a hill , this higher side has rubble stone corner posts. The porch is very similar to the one on the opposite facade . Beneath this porch , cellar windows are .. :risible • . 'l'heae are · 6/ 3.
Inside this unit, there are chair rails in the center through hall . The south west room has an arched doorway . Architect James Wollon has suggested the possibility of this arched doorway having been , at one time, the main exterior entrance . The thick passageway has moulded paneling and no door . The south east room has moulded panel trim at the 1/1 windows . The fireplace in this room has been altered to accomodate an iron stove .
To the north west of the hallway is the stairway. This is on the west wall . Opposite the stairway is the entrance to the north east room . The fireplace in this room has a fairly ornate mantle and frieze . There are bert mnullinv~ on th~ ~antle, fl~t nilRhters and an oval , beaded moulding

Th~ story of this house goes back to 1781 and Lafayette ' s expedition through Harfor~ County . In response to an order from General WaP-hington to reinforce Genora1 Green ' s troops in the South, Lafayette and his men departed from Elkton on April 11 and crossed the Susquehanna into Harford County at a point known aa Bald Friar .
The troops marched by way of Trappe Church, Priestford , Churchville, Bush and Abingdon to Baltimore.
When Officers reached that part of the road which descends to Deer Creek , .__.,at Priestfor d , from the Trappe Church, opposite the beautiful Indian Spring Farm ,
they were enchanted with the scene . Captain Greme agreed with his friend Captain Gimat , that when the war was over they would return to France , and after arranging their affairs , come back to America and buy the land which so enchnnted their eyes .
That this plan was carried out in part is proven by records in the Clerk of Court ' s office in Bel Air , where , from May 1793 to February 1796 , over 8oo acres were listed as purchased by Angus Greme . The money for these purchases was furnished by Gimat vho was the wealthier member of the pair . lie presented the land to Greme and both returned to France intending to come back to America. Gimat was killed in action in Sranta Domingo in the service of France.
Greme , however , returned , bringing his wife and several children . He lived and died on the estate he und his friend had chosen as the most beautiful spot they had seen in America . He died in the year 180o, and lies buried in the cemetery of Trappe Church where a stone marks his grave . The inscription reads as follows:
Angus Greme Captain in the French
Army under Lafayette in the American Revolution
Died June 11~ 18oo Age 50 years
The tract, Maiden ' s Bower was purchased in 1741 by Aquila Paca from Daniel ,,,-....Scutt, Jr . Paca , in turn , sold portions of the land to Angus Greme.

acres of the tract , Maiden ' s Bower . Tenants listed are Daniel Loughry , Matthew Judd, and Michael Daui:;herty . Greme owned one slave . The house itself is describeo ns a two story stone house measuring 30 ' x 30 '. There w~re numProus other outbuildings listed , i ncluding a 10 1 x 10 ' brick springhouse .
Two listings for Mairien ' s Bower show up in the 1814 Maryland ~ax List . 11+~~ acres of Maiden 1 s Bo•·1er appear in the listing for Thirrl District , Part III . O~mers are listed as the heirs of Reverend Joseph Erlen . A house is mentionerl but its description noes not fit the house in question. It is listed ~s a one story house , part brick, part stone .
A notation in the 'Phird District , Part IV sounds more like it: 500 acreG of the tract Maiden ' s Bower with 19 slrtves and a house measuring 30' x 32 '. The construction materials Are not mentioned , however- , -"or the main house and the owner ' s name is hard to read . It appears to be Mary F. Greme . Also mentioned among the outbuildings is a 10' x 10 ' brick springhouse .
David Hill and James Tallon report that beams and rafters in the attic of the center unit indicate that the original roof may have e:ther run eastwest or have been hipped . '.·!easurements for this section match both the 1798 and 1814 tax assessments . (See floor plan) .
