Paisley: I am an active girland must have a canine friendto play with in a fenced yard, but most people see me as justa pretty lap dog, because I stillthink I’m a puppy. I do well withcats, dogs and older childrenand I am working on housetrain-ing and have mastered thecrate. My foster mom thinks my training will be perfectin no time – I just need some consistency in my life.

Riggins: Did you readabout me in the news? I wasfound abandoned in a trailerwith some puppies, cats and adog that wasn’t alive. I had tostay at the vet’s office for aweek where I gained fourpounds. In my foster home I amproving to be the sweetest guy

in the world. I do eat puppy food several times a dayto help me slowly gain weight but I am doing great.

Cinnie: I am just a baby, soI have a lot to learn, and needsomeone that wants to teachme all sorts of cool things. I amcrate-trained and working onhouse-training. My foster par-ents say that I am a very lov-ing, energetic and an awesomepuppy. I am very food motivat-

ed and I already know how to sit on command. I loveto play fetch and I ride well in the car.

Kobe: I am such a goodboy. I am house-trained, walkgreat on a leash and know sitand stay. I am not a big fan ofcrates and will cry when youfirst leave me so homes withcommon walls might not be agood fit but it only lasts a fewminutes. I am a bed dog so I

want to sleep in the bed and I am relentless about it.So be sure you have room in your bed for me.

Zeke: I am a ladie’s man,and I don’t like any competitionfrom any other dudes. I am justa little over a year old and I getalong great with dogs after Iget to know them. I am a mel-low little dude I will even letyou trim my nails. I am lookingfor a new place where I am the

big tom cat and everyone else is a girl! That will bethe key to my complete happiness.

When it isquiet time, I love to cuddle under the blankets on thecouch with my foster parents when they watch TV.

Gendry: Butterscotchboy. I’ve got the heart of a lionsurrounded by the most gor-geous orange coat. I’m veryactive and love to playwhether it’s with a toy or withmy roommate. Pick me up andhear me purr! But I don’t liketo stay still for very long

because I am afraid I might miss on too much.

Drewida: Lucky lass. Icame to SAFE Haven afterbeing plucked from an areahigh-kill shelter. I’m not surewhether it was my pleasingpersonality or my beautiful coatthat impressed my rescuer butI hope it was a combination ofboth of those things. I can’t

wait to become someone’s loving companion. Ipromise you won’t go wrong if you pick me.

Rizzo: Definite showstop-per. I’m all wrapped up in agorgeous orangey, tan coatofficially known as “creme.”When you visit me in theJungle Room, I’ll most likelycome right over to check youout. I’m not only nice to look atbut also fun to be around. Iknow I’d be a great cat for you so let’s get acquaint-ed soon.

Qwirkle: Social success.I’m an outgoing lady with per-sonality plus and I love to meetpeople and I can’t wait to showyou why I would be just the per-fect cat to adopt. I’m at that fab-ulous age of one year old andpast a lot of kitten craziness butstill lively and curious. We couldshare so many wonderful occasions together. All youhave to do is come meet me and sign those papers!

LaSpezia: Pretty andplayful with a luxurious coat. The folks here say I’m one ofthe sweetest youngsters tocome along in quite a while.I’m living with Pisa right nowand we get along so welltogether. Maybe you wouldconsider adopting us both andgiving us the happiness and security of a foreverhome.

Cookie Crisp: A realsweetie. I’m one of the “cookiecats” at SAFE Haven and I’mjust back from a great vacationwith a fabulous foster momand I am now ready to moveinto a home of my own. I’mvery thankful to have beenchosen to come here from ahigh-kill shelter. So I plan to be the best feline buddyever when you come to adopt and pick me up.

Cherry has the mostbeautiful amber brown eyesyou have ever seen, and atjust two years old, those eyesare searching for the familythat will treat her as their baby.A former mother to a litter ofseven, Cherry is ready for lifeto be all about her, or rather, about you! She cares more about human attentionand affection than any treat you could possibly offer.

Giovanni is a growingfive-month-old pup who lovesto cuddle with humans asmuch as he loves to play withhis siblings. He is a fast learnerand knows sit, down, come, crate and outside. He also hasperfect leash manners.Giovanni gets along with dogs, children, and even cats! He would be the perfectpuppy for any size family.

Tulip is a snuggly, two-year-old red-nosed Pit Bull lady. Sheloves to spend time curled upnext to family members on thecouch. She has learned to bevery well behaved when shegoes for walks. She is crate-trained and potty trained. Tuliploves to make friends with chil-

dren and other dogs, though she does like to be theboss when she hangs out with the big dogs.

Guinevere is a five-month-old puppy looking forher forever home. She alreadyknows sit, paw, stay, high five, and walks great on a leash. She loves playing with every-one she meets. She is greatwith big and little dogs.Guinevere is wonderful with

kids and is crate-trained. She loves to play outsideand splash in her puppy pool.

Lacey is a beautiful one-year-old Pit Bull mix with a zestfor life. When she isn’t trying toplay with people or other dogs, she’s content to sit out on theporch or by a window, watchingthe world around her. She’scompletely housebroken, crate-trained, and is very affectionate

with children. Lacey is great with dogs of all sizes, and would love to live with other playful dogs.

Andy is a three-year-oldPit Bull/Boxer mix and is veryfriendly and eager to please. He enjoys playing tug andloves to snuggle up. He is veryfood motivated, well-behavedon a leash and house- andcrate-trained. Andy gets alongwell with the other dogs in his

foster home. Andy came to the rescue severely neg-lected, but now he is a healthy, bright-eyed boy.

Angelina is a sweettempered senior who loves tobe loved. She enjoys playingwith a ball and going on walks, and each day she gets a littlebit sleeker and a little bit moreenergetic. She is vocal when astranger comes to the housethen quickly warms to a visitor.

She is altogether a very well-mannered lady and willmake a wonderful addition to a very fortunate family.

Shaggy is an owner sur-render who needed a rear legamputated and now is learningthe ropes of his new life as a“tripawd.” Shaggy is a ray ofsunshine and despite his or-deal, he never stopped smiling. He has determination and apositive attitude that most

humans strive for. He’s a big boy, but a gentle onewith people, dogs and cats alike.

Gem is a nine-year-oldowner surrender. She wasloved very much but herowner couldn’t give her theattention she needed. Sheloves to go on walks on aleash, car rides and loves ten-nis balls and squeeky plushtoys. She loves to fetch hertennis balls and is a happy girl who likes to bearound people.

Mr. Biscuit and

Miss Goldie: We area hubby and wife duo who firstmet when we were cute littlepuppies. Many beautiful goldenpuppies later, we are nowready to retire into a peacefulhome. We lived most of ourlives outdoors, but we arehouse-trained. We are inseparable and love to hangout next to each other at home.

Zoe is absolutely obsessedwith tennis balls and will playall kinds of games with you.She plays with other dogs andis just fine living with cats andother submissive dogs. Sinceshe has limited visibility in oneeye, she should not be in ahome where there are lots ofactive kids because movements around her headand in places she can’t see scare her.

Tibbs: I had a horrible life-living in a basement but now Iam walking a lot and eating alot to try and get back intoshape. I get excited when myfoster parents come home andwhen they wake up in themorning. I do really well onwalks and I just love to stopand smell the world. I do have a hard time with stairsso I would need a home without a lot of stairs.

Fish ‘n’ Nips(fromThe The Doggy Bone Cookbook by Michele Bledsoe)

Ingredients:

6 oz. (I use the entire can) of tuna fish1/4 c. of water drained from tuna1/2 c. whole wheat flour1/4 c. cornmeal1 tablespoon of parsley

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl combine tuna, parsley and water. Add cornmeal and flour. Form a dough, knead and roll 1/4-inch thick. Cut the dough into 1/2-inchsquares. Bake at 350 degrees on a greased cookie sheet(I substitute the greased cookie sheet for parchment paper)for 15 - 20 minutes (or until lightly browned). Makes approx-imately 3 dozen 1/2-inch treats.

THE WILD WEATHER this summer brought about alot of things: downed branches, loss of powerand some much needed rain. But one morning

after a night of storms one of our dogs found some-thing else in our yard … a kitten! The kitten was wet.And I couldn’t get a good look at it to see if it washurt since it was caught in some bushes trying to find

shelter from our barking beagle.

I brought our pooch back inside andtried to find something in our pantrythat might help lure the kitten out so Icould examine it. I opened a can oftuna and returned outside. The kittywas nowhere to be found! Hemust’ve returned to his clowder.

Now I had an opened can of tuna. What to do!? Itwas too early for tuna fish sandwiches!

So I consulted my cat treats cookbooks and foundthis recipe. This recipe comes from The Kitty TreatsCookbook by Michele Bledsoe.

Sweet Tarts: I amfrom Orange County and havealready had a litter of kittens.Recently I had hernia surgerybut have recovered quite well.Although I was initially veryshy when I arrived, I am nowfriendly and am happy to bewith other cats. If you let me

jump in your lap, I’ll be happy to be loved, but I don’tlike to be picked up. (2-year-old, female DSH)

Marissa: I am a one-year-old female Shepherd andI love to play in puppy pools. Ilove to play with other dogs, too but I don’t like cats. Thestaff here say that I am a goodleash walker and that I am verysweet. If you would like anactive companion who is

always ready to do what you want to do, I am yourdog. (1 year, female, Shepherd)

Thora: I am a four-year-old female and I was at theDurham shelter before I cameto Paws4ever. Because I amFIV positive, my adoption feeis waived. I can live the rest ofmy life without issue, as longas I am the only cat in thehousehold. I am a sweet cat,and I love attention. (DSH)

Nala: I am a very sweetkitty with very unusual mark-ings that make me uniqueamong other cats. I have beenfront declawed. My humanfriends tell me I have quite thelittle purr motor, which comesout instantly when you pet me.I am affectionate with lots oflove to give. I get along great with other cats, but Idon’t like dogs. (12 years, female, DSH)

Seven: I love to leap aroundand play outside, and I lovespending time with my humanbuddies because they canscratch all the right places. I dolove to show my affection andsometimes it just gets the bestof me. The things I enjoy arewalks with my humans, snug-gling on the couch and maybe catching a late nightmovie (and I like kitties!). (6 years, male Shepherd)

DDeeaarr WWiilllliiee: I currently own a four-year-old cat that wasfound as a kitten after her mom had passed away.Unfortunately, she has never been the most affectionatecat, but did manage to bond closely with the 15-year-oldcat I had at the time that showed her much patience andtolerance. Several years later as he became terminally ill,she groomed him and herded him towards his water andfood bowls to help him indicating a special connection

between them. My senior kitty passed awayin September of 2010 and I am just now ableto entertain the thought that maybe my cur-rent cat is lonely and would like a new felinefriend. I am curious as to what kind of friendyou would recommend for a kitty that tendsto be more dominant in nature? I have beenadvised by many to consider getting a youngmale and sequestering them to separateparts of the house until they get used to

smelling one another. What does Willie think?

AA: Willie is sorry to hear of the passing of your kitty and un-derstands the heartbreak associated with such a loss. Williethinks it is wonderful that you are considering getting anotherfeline family member to keep your kitty company. Willie hasfive feline brothers and six feline sisters in his house and Williegets along well with all of them as long as they follow all ofWillie’s household rules. Willie thinks either a male or femalekitten would work out fine in your situation. Willie agrees thatinitially separating the new feline family member to his or herown room so that he or she can become accustomed to thenew environment is wise. Willie believes this will also allowyour current feline family member to adjust to having a newfurriend in the house in a less stressful manner.

DDeeaarr WWiilllliiee: My veterinarian is recommending giving mycat monthly heartworm prevention. I thought this was a dis-ease only dogs could get?

AA: Willie is so glad you asked this question! Willie has found itto be a common misunderstanding among humans thatheartworm disease affects only the canine population. Catscan become infected with heartworm disease. The diseaseaffects cats differently than dogs, but is equally serious.Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes. It takes justone mosquito to infect a cat. Since mosquitoes can getindoors, both indoor and outdoor cats are at risk. In oneNorth Carolina study 28 percent of cats diagnosed withheartworm disease were indoor only cats. Since Willie doesnot want to become sick from this disease, Willie makes sureto take his heartworm preventive every single month.

DDeeaarr WWiilllliiee: are there any local events coming up thatyou plan to make a guest appearance at? I have nevermet you before and would love the opportunity to do so!

AA: Willie is honored that you would like to meet him! Willieloves meeting new furriends. In less than a month Willie ismaking a special appearance at Cary’s 2012 ScavengerHunt on Sat., Sept. 15. Willie hopes you visit their website forevent information or to sign up a participating team, at:http://carycitizen.com/2012/08/15/sign-up-for-the-2012-cary-scavenger-hunt/. Last month NC senators Kay Hagan and Richard Burr introduced theCorolla Wild Horses Protection Act (S. 3448) in the U.S. Senate. This federal bill impacts North Carolina in particular because it aims toprotect the free-roaming wild horses in and around the CurrituckNational Wildlife Refuge, a wild herd of horses traced back to the arrivalof Spanish explorers on the Outer Banks in the 16th century.

This legislation will expand the allowable population of no fewer than110 horses from the previous cap of 60 with a future increase to 120-130.

The Corolla Wild Horses Protection Act has already passed in theU.S. House of Representatives (introduced by Rep. Walter Jones Jr.[R-NC3]) and now awaits a vote in the U.S. Senate. According to gov-track.us the Senate bill has an uphill battle as only three percent of allSenate bills in 2009-2010 were enacted. (Source: ASCPA). . .

ALFONSO WONDERS WHATHE HAS DONE to be strand-ed in the limbo he finds him-self – a glorified shed. Hisfoster mom, me, can’t under-stand why he was relin-quished by his original fami-ly despite the explanations. After all, he is a bright, per-sonable, affectionate hand-some cat.

Here, he is social, respect-ful of my other foster cat, grooming her when sheallows it, bouncing and toss-ing the cat toys around theroom, and displaying perfectlitter box manners. He isabout to experience anotherlevel of lonliness. The otherfoster cat whom he hasgrown to love is leaving.

She will live with children, dogs – too much activity forthe subdued Alfonso. Hewants peace, perhaps anoth-er cat, one or two people; areasonable home to call hisown.

As us animal people know,North Carolina has its shareof cats. The rescue group Iwork with, IndependentAnimal Rescue, has pro-grams that “fix” homelesscats and those from lowincome families, and anotherthat rescues cats and dogsfrom high-kill shelters toplace in foster homes; plus they have many volunteers thatstaff events from adoptathons to fundraising. With all thesehard working volunteers it can drive one insane to hear, “Wealready have a cat (or) dog.” JUST ONE?! Get another and pos-sibly a third! Or you hear, “We already have two.” I say, thenget a third!

With over 150,000 cats anddogs being euthanized a yearin this state, alone, everyoneneeds to stretch a little.

And then this tired excuse,“My spouse is allergic”There are great drugs forthat while you acclimate tothe cats. Keep them out ofyour bedroom; wash handsafter petting; have an out-door cat fence and a smallbarn. A doctor that reviewedmy last statement suggestedI delete it, but I can’t.Homes are needed. At leastconsider a Poodle mix oreven a Greyhound. Homesare at a premium and rescuegroups will work with you tofind just the right compan-ion to add to your crew. Aswe step into fall, the litterskeep coming. Did I mention, homes are needed?

Neutering/spaying shouldbe law. If you’re low onfunds, there is the $20 FIX.Don’t qualify? There is POP,SNAP or our many excellentvets. You want your offspringto experience a litter?Become a foster home forone of the many homeless lit-ters. If your home would becomplete with a beautifullarge-sized cat like Alfonso, please check-out his link atwww.animalrescue.net/C-06-
