FFFRRROOOMMM OOOUUURRR SSSEEECCCRRREEETTTAAARRRYYY ––– LLLIIINNNDDDAAA SSSTTTEEEEEENNN GULF COAST QUILT GUILD MINUTES

January 4, 2012

The meeting was called to order at 6:55 p.m. by President Cynthia Gilbert. All cell phones were turned off, and member and guests were welcomed, including the Lake Jackson quilt guild, with their raffle quilt, and our guest speaker, Cynthia LeBlanc Regone. We wished a happy birthday to all January birthday members. Donna Conner moved that we approve the December minutes and treasurer's report, Joann Criste seconded the motion, and it passed. President Cynthia asked for a volunteers for the nominating committee who will present nominees for all board positions with the exception of the Newsletter Editor. Opal Anderson volunteered to chair this committee. Others who volunteered to serve on this committee were Cynthia Bayliss and Donna Ross. Pat Bridges announced that our raffle quilt will go to the Lakeview Quilt Guild this month, and she has several people who will take it. She still needs someone to take it to the Quilt Guild of Greater Houston on January 17. They meet at the Presbyterian Church on Memorial. Jackie Rodewald will hold a meeting of the Auction Committee on Saturday, January 14, at 1 p.m. at her house. She reminded us all to bring at least one other person to the February 1 meeting - the Auction. We have one new member, Mary Bly from Pearland. She was invited by Donna Conner. Jackie presented gifts to both of them. The auction blocks this month were tan. If you have anything to donate, please give it to Jackie by the 15th of January. We then had Secret Sister show and share. Jackie won the 1/2 yard lotto. Next month the colors will be either red or valentine fabric. Bea Elliott announced that we had 39 members present with 1 guest/new member. Bea won the door prize which was a tool brought by Donna Conner. Cynthia Magnant told us about a study group and quilt show at Winedale, near Round Top in February. She will put all the information about this in the newsletter. Madeline Meyer said to get anything in for Community Service that you have, as she is going out of office. She thanked all who have helped this year, and read a thank-you note from the Brazoria County Women's Center. Sunshine/Shadows: Several reported on various stages of progress of illness of our members and their families. Betty Findley's granddaughter is better; Jerry Barnett (Carol's husband) is doing better, Kay Wenzel hasn't been feeling well, and Virginia Talent is not doing well after her surgery.

Jan DeAlmeida announced that the Retreat will be July 27-29, 2012, at the Danbury Retreat. The theme will be "The Roaring Twenties," so get your flapper things ready. She will have the forms ready next month. She is trying to keep the cost at $150.00.

Show and Share: 1. Lydia Quiroz - 2 quilts - one named Bonnie Bonnet Redwork in red, white, and beige, quilted by Betty Findley, and another she quilted herself: a scrappy classic bow tie quilt 2. Sue Driskill showed the Friday Night Bee Auction Quilt, a bright quilt called Quilter's Puzzle, quilted by Nancy Baker. 3. Jan DeAlmeida - A block of the month quilt from Pinwheels and Posies called American Beauty. Her husband took 50 hours to quilt it. 4. Connie Brose - showed a quilt top of the yellow brick road pattern, in mixed gold, browns, wine, black and white. Jan will quilt it for her. 5. Sylvia Nelson - Summer's End, a blue and white quilt with ocean wave quilting done by Jan DeAlmeida. 6. Laurel Akim - a basket quilt she called Trick or Treat, all in needle turn applique, and all hand quilted by herself. 7. Patsy Franko - a tee-shirt quilt using Scouting tee-shirts from the last 7 years. It was pieced by Milissa Stage, and quilted by Patsy. 8. Karen Kumke - a chatelaine 9. Karen Perkins - liked the Christmas Package quilt that Jan worked on at the last retreat so much, that she made one for herself, called Flurry. It was quilted by Karen Hoffman. 10. Debbie Williams - showed two wall hangings: one entitled Fall, and the other entitled Snowmen. Break

Jan introduced our speaker, Cynthia LeBlanc Regone. Her email is www.cajunclassicsquilts.com, so that should tell you something. She lives in Katy now, but is from Lafayette, LA, originally. She has been quilting for 30 years, teaching for 20 years. Her topic was "Kick It Up a Notch." She taught Wool Felt Applique for Beginners at Festival. Use Clover quick bias tape for stems - stick it down, then sew. Think of something different for a background other than white/cream. Use a bright yellow, or a lime green. Mix techniques within a quilt, like rick-rack. Stripes are very versatile. Keep a constant to keep a quilt from being too busy. The eyes must have a place to rest. Stripes are very versatile. Use in sashing or binding. Batiks are also very versatile. She showed us many examples of her work and then showed us an easy way to make delectable mountains. Her last quilt was an amazing "A Thousand Pyramids." There was not one duplicate triangle in the entire quilt. This is easy to do with an exchange program, and rows of paper piecing, she says. The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Linda Steen, Secretary
