Parish Fete 29th June 2013

Organising for the parish fete for 2013 has alreadybegun but we are very short of volunteers to helporganise the event and helpers on the day.

Because we are avoiding the clash with half-term thisyear as well as the Royal Cornwall Show we hopethe school will join us in making it a special occasion.

If anyone can help either on the day, or, moreimportantly beforehand, please contact either:

myself ([email protected]) orHelen Rowe ([email protected])for more information.

Again this year, the fete will, hopefully be at theplaying field where we have much more room. Wehope that even more static engines will be on displayand that some of the fairground attractions will bepresent again. A final decision on which items, is stillto be made, so if anyone wants anything special, justcontact us and we’ll see what we can do!

The usual attractions will be there, competitions forthe children both large and small, refreshments andbar-be-que again run by Tim Stumbles and JaneCole from The Cornish Arms

Disease affecting the Ash Tree

A threat to the Ash trees in our country is presently under serious threat from a fungus,“Chalara fraxinea”, please look out for Ash trees when out and about and if you think atree may be infected please contact a Tree Warden.

An infected Ash tree may look similar to this (see picture right)

Mature trees affected by the disease initially display dieback of the shoots and twigs at the periphery of theircrowns. Diseased saplings typically display dead tops and/or side shoots. A branch or stem may display wiltingof the foliage above.

For more detailed information please see: www.forestry.gov.uk/chalara

For any tree related advice or issues, please do not hesitate to contact the parish tree wardens who will dotheir best to help find information you require.

TAYLOR’S PUMPING ENGINE, WHEAL VIRGIN, CONSOLIDATED MINES

The photo on the front cover is of Taylor’s Engine House and Chimney which sits on the western slope of the WhealMaid Valley.

The Parish Council have received a grant from Natural England toconsolidate the remains of Taylor’s buildings, and work is likely to start inJanuary for around six months.

Taylor’s pumping engine house and whim (winding) engine house with theirseparate shafts as depitcted in the early 19th century. The large pumpingengine house and its chimney are shown, as well as the capstan andshearlegs which were used for hauling pump rodsand pipework up and downthe shaft.

Taylor’s pumping engine house is one of the oldest to survive in Cornwall. Its engine was originally built by Harvey’s of Hayle in about 1824 for WhealAlfred, where it worked as a compound engine with a 40” high pressurecylinder and a 70” low pressure cylinder. It was moved to Wheal Virgin,Consols in 1826 by the great Cornish engineer Arthur Woolf, who removedits 40” cylinder. In 1835, the engine was given a larger, 85” diameter cylinderand a new beam.

At the time it was one of six massive pumping engines which raised 2,700 gallons of water a minute, day and night,to drain the extensive workings at Consols until the mine closed in 1870. Steam to drive the engine was provided byfour ten-ton Cornish boilers which would have burnt about 1,500 tons of coal every year (nearly 70,000 tons over the46 years the engine worked here.)

Parish Walk - Sunday December 30th

A chance to walk off Christmas excesses before loading up again with New Yearexcess!

We will leave the Cornish Arms car park at 10.45 a.m. for a 3½ mile stroll throughlocal paths – a few steep bits, and a few muddy bits as usual, but mainly goodwalking terrain. Some new paths and some old.

Bring your dogs (on leads) – it’s good to sniff out the opposition!

HedgesThank you to those local farmers who have been out trimming their roadsidehedges. Still a few to go, and a few private properties that are forcing walkers outtowards the middle of the highway.

WassailingOrchard-Visiting Wassail is still alive and well in the cider regions of the West Country, but I can’t say Ihave heard of anything similar locally. Perhaps no one has a big enough orchard?

The idea is to awake the apple trees and to scare away evil spirits to ensure agood harvest in the following Autumn. Lead by a King and Queen, a processionaltune will be played and an assembled crowd will bang drums and pots & pans, then finally a gun is fired through the branches.

It normally happens on Twelfth Night, but that varies from the evening of5th January or 17th January, depending on which calendar is used. After this years’ dismal apple crop, there could be several who think it’s a good idea!

There is also House-Visiting wassail – now called carol singing.

Cleaner WantedFrogpool Methodist Church are looking for a cleaner.Approximately 5 hours per month. For further details, telephone 01872 863143

Winter Saltfor roads and pavements. It’s getting colder, so remember that the Parish Council has placed two large “dumpy” bags full of roadsalt, in the car parks of the Richard Jory Playing Field at Pulla Cross and at Crofthandy Village Hall. The salt is NOT for personal use, but may be taken and used by residents who need to grit slipperypavements or roads. There is also a Salt Box alongside the bus shelter at the Cornish Arms, Frogpool, where the road hascaused problems in the past.

Pulling together as a community can get results!

The residents of Chapel Lane and Lower Goongumpas decidedthe time had come to stop putting up with a lane that wasconstantly pot-holed and dangerous. Together, they contributedover £11,500 to have the lane levelled and tarmaced.

Ian (Charlie) Bolitho liaised with Cornwall Council over the designand drainage, chased up residents for their contributions andreports that everyone is very pleased with the end result. Hethanked the Parish Council for their input and support regardingthe drainage.

VILLAGE HALL

The village hall committee are as busy as ever planning forChristmas and the coming year’s events. Our bookings arevery steady with an explosion of children’s parties this year. Our patio project is still ongoing, almost there. It seemswhenever we have the time to do some work the weatherhas not been kind.

The village chapel, now disused has found a temporary newuse as a rehearsal room for the very successful Lanner andDistrict Silver Band. I am told it is compact and very loud, good for them although I am not sure Mr Snell would haveapproved. They have commissioned the building of a newband room on the old bandroom site at the top of lanner hill.

The parking is a little hectic to say the least on Mondays andThursdays. We have offered them parking at the village hall.I understand not all the players are making use of this offerso I hope the local residents will understand until themessage reaches them all.

Recently we have once more been the polling station thistime for the police commissioner elections. The turnout waspredictably very low and was reflected throughout thecountry. As usual any enquiries for bookings and comingevents please contact Chriss on 01209 822577. Our nextvillage get together will hopefully be New Years Eve Party.

PARISH COUNCIL

The Parish Council meet at the Richard Jory Playing Field at 7pm on the third Thursday of every month. The first half-hour is set aside foryou, the public, to raise matters that concern you. You can also e-mail your queries to [email protected] . or contactCouncillors direct.

WHAT’S CURRENTLY HAPPENING, OR BEING DISCUSSED?

As reported separately in this issue, we are progressing with the scheme to consolidate mine features in the Wheal Maid Valley. Thevalley will also be hosting the National Mountain Biking event in April 2013.

There always seems to be something to spend money on in the Playing Field. Repairs to floodlights, kitchen equipment, play apparatus –as well as ongoing maintenance – we appreciate the efforts of the Car Boot organisers who contributed over £550 from the 2012 ‘Boots’,despite several rainy Sundays.

The Parish Rooms are being used frequently for children’s parties, and we welcome any enquiries for their use.

We continue to be consulted by Cornwall Council on all planning applications for our parish. If you are submitting an application, you arewelcome to attend a Council meeting to explain what you are doing – the public ‘clinic’ is from 7 – 7.30pm.

Despite it being closed to new burials, the Parish Council are responsible for the maintenance of Gwennap Churchyard, and have recentlyprovided granite chippings for the paths, which were dangerously slippery. We are grateful that Gwennap Church organised the actuallabour to spread the chippings, using a team from the Probation Service.

Regional and National Mountain Bikes in Wheal Maid Valley

As part of our ongoing programme to open Wheal Maid Valley (WMV) to acceptable public use; Fully Sussed andBritish Cycling, in partnership with Gwennap Parish Council,  will run two Mountain Bike competitions in WMV inApril 2013.  The first, on 7th April, will attract over 200 cyclists plus support crews and is a Regional Round.  Thesecond, over the weekend of 27/28 April, is a National Round and could attract over 500 cyclists plus crews.Gwennap have already submitted a directory of local businesses to the organisers but would also like the eventsto constitute a 'direct' opportunity for business such as mobile catering, entertainment, cycle associated businessesetc.  If you would like the opportunity to bring your mobile business to the events then please contact the Clerk tothe Parish Council at [email protected]

See this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrIg2tC5FDM for an idea of the size and scale. The video showsthe event from 2012.  Gwennap Parish Council would like to thank those local businesses and individuals whoare already supporting these events.
