2017 is approaching very quickly – 2016 just flew by. Don’t they seem to go quicker as we age? Another extremely busy year for our Club, GVMVDC. I think we all deserve a bit of a rest over the

coming Christmas festive season and catch up with family, friends and recharge our batteries. Please note that our annual Christmas break up will once again be held at the Grahamvale School on Sunday the 11th of December commencing at 10am. Some of the highlights other than a bit of fellowship are the Concours, presentations and our good friend Santa will be dropping in. If you have the kiddies coming along please bring a wrapped present, with the recipient’s name clearly visible on the gift. The Club will be providing a meal, and as always please supply your own plates and cutlery. The usual cold drinks, tea and coffee, ice cream and lollies, and of course there is more! – everyone’s favourite – RAFFLES, compliments of the catering committee.

All members are most welcome, but please confirm numbers for catering by Monday 5th December, but late numbers can be received up until Friday morning provided there are not a lot of extras as all of the ingredients will have been purchased. Take note cost for visitors is $15.

Please consider attending to make this a great way to end the Club year, this is an ideal opportunity to meet newer members of the Club and view a range of members’ vehicles.

On another note, a number of members are still to finalise their 2017 fees. Please pay by this meeting and if paying into our Bendigo Bank account to include your name and membership number when making direct payments. This will make Treasurer Julie’s life a whole lot less stressful.

The new committee has held its first meeting, a big thank you to all our “volunteers” involved in the various committees.

On behalf of the Committee past and present, we thank you for your continuing support during the year of 2016, and we look forward to a safe and prosperous 2017.

To all GVMVDC members, family and friends, a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. See you at the next meeting. Bill Winters

It’s December, so our Club Christmas breakup is the big outing for the month. By now you should

have advised the Committee if you are attending. If not, email the Club straight away so that the caterers can be advised of final numbers. It’s always a good day out, with lots of Club vehicles on display. Please bring your classic vehicle along for everyone to see. The best cars on the day will be featured on the Drivers Journal cover for the year, so do a bit of polishing beforehand!

Subs have been set at $65 for 2017. If you check the address on your Journal envelope, you’ll see that you’re listed as a 2017 member after they’re paid. If not, you’re still a 2016 member and this will be the last Journal you get. If you have paid but it’s not updated, check with Julie at the meeting. Please use the renewal form that was the October Journal if your details have changed. You can pay your subs by direct deposit – see the info on page 2.

If you’re not receiving a monthly email advising of a new Journal being available on our website, then you need to let me know! Just send a message to the Club’s email address (top of page 2) and I’ll add you to the list. Currently about 125 members get this monthly message.

See you at the meeting. Don’t forget to wear your name badge so everyone knows who you are, and turn off your mobile phone! Brendan Walsh

The Rotary Club of Mooroopna is seeking our support with our vehicles in this year’s New Year’s Eve street parade and festival. Please meet at Mooroopna War Memorial parking area at 6pm. (Opposite McDonald’s). The parade will start at 6.30pm. A police vehicle will lead the parade followed by Vintage/Classic vehicles (us), kids on bikes, floats and trucks. On reaching the reserve, members are requested to form a static display (for a short period) at the end of the parade. Stay for as long as you like – it is a good night!

BYO chairs; food and drink available. **Twilight Run to Nathalia – Sunday 15th January 2017

Bring your vehicle along and have it inspected, especially if you’re booked on the major rally in March/April 2017.

1935 Chevrolet Master Roadster

In 1935 the Holden body works made 161 Chevrolet Master roadsters. These cars had many new features not seen before in any past models – suicide doors, steel floor pan made with their new stamping machine, adjustable seat, a bigger engine and of course being a Master is 1-inch longer than a Standard and has knee-action suspension. But some things never change – the brakes are terrible, 1935

was the last year of the cable operated brakes and in 1936 they changed to a hydraulic system. GM US made a small number of roadsters in 1935 but only Standards, no Masters were made. Holden continued making these vehicles till 1937 but the days of rumble seats were numbered, sedans were safer and had protection from the elements.

I operate a vehicle repair and spare parts

business in Kilmore, opening the doors in 1983. In 2002 I was delivering spare parts to a local workshop. I noticed a car in the dusty corner of his workshop. I asked him what its story was. He informed me that a customer brought the car in for restoration in 1978, the car was owned by his father who had bought the car new. It was stripped down to the bones and some body work done. Unfortunately this customer met with hard times and the money stopped, so it sat in that dusty corner for more than 20 years. I mentioned to him that I would be interested in buying the car and so two months later the car was mine.

This was a major restoration with many missing parts – no woodwork, just door skins only, all the parts loose in boxes, no door hinges, locks, running boards rusted out and seeing it was a Holden body, Fisher body parts didn’t fit. The hardest part was the doors, fabricating many parts, I needed help with the making of locks and the making of the door frames, rumble seat lid, and windscreen glass frame. The trim

and

hood were made by a trimmer in Greenvale.

The wheel spats are original as are the chrome mounds (very rare). A pair of spats were sold on e-bay for $2500 recently, as was a 1937 Holden body roadster sold at auction two months ago unrestored for $56,000 (the world has gone mad!).

Rally Report

The annual Toolamba Twilight Festival was once again a success where the community enjoyed celebrating the festive season. Celebrated on the last Sunday in November each year, this year was just as well attended as

previous festivals, according to chairperson Laurie Thomson. “It was very successful; the weather was with us and it was well attended,” he said. “The children certainly used the amusements and kept us busy.”

Organised by the Toolamba Lions Club, the community event provided an opportunity for the residents of the Toolamba district to come together, catch up and enjoy spending time with each other. Mr Thomson said, as

usual, Santa Claus on the fire truck didn’t disappoint, with children swamping him. “I don’t even think he had a chance to get off the truck,” he said. He said they were happy with the numbers, with about 500 attending

across the three-hour event. “As long as the community is happy, we’re happy; and I think they were very happy.” he said.

Mystery Weekend – Saturday 19th-Sunday 20th November 2016

Some rally members turned left and others turned right; some had morning tea in Tatura, others had morning tea in Nathalia; with a few more turns to the left and right we all met up for lunch in Echuca!

Once refreshed, rally sheets for the afternoon run were handed out that once again took members in different directions, but all arriving at the same place (Cohuna). There each member received their final rally sheet that would take them to their destination and overnight stop (Barham) and refreshments! Followed by dinner at the local Barham Hotel, where the beer was cold and the cuisine was excellent!!!

The following day “Sunday” we had a group booking with “Simply Tomatoes & Aussie Wool Quilts” (14km north of Boort), owned and operated by Ian and Marilyn Lanyon. Our group booking included a guided tour, morning tea and lunch. An excellent venue!!!

“Simply Tomatoes & Aussie Wool Quilts” is a farm with a difference! Over almost thirty years of Lanyon’s growing tomatoes, Marilyn developed many recipes from red and green tomatoes. But, there was one stand-out favourite for family and friends – Simply Green Tomatoes. So after extensive market research domestically and overseas, Ian and Marilyn began Simply Tomatoes journey in 2002, with exports to 30 countries!

They are manufacturers of Australian made wool quilts, wool under-blankets, wool pillows and woolly warmers, all made on the farm from all natural fibres.

After lunch a few members decided to visit the “Spanner Man” (John Piccoli), one of the world's most unusual artists. His garden is littered with dozens of larger-than-life sculptures of mermaids, marlin, and even a full horse and wagon. Well worth a visit!!! Phil Podbury

Veteran Car Club Annual Rally, Healesville – 19th-20th November 2016 Cal and I could only get to one day of the Veteran Club’s annual rally this year, but it was still worth the trip. The weather was good, the scenery around Healesville was sensational and 35 veteran vehicles attended. We started from the RACV Resort and headed towards Powelltown, where there was a guided tour through the saw-mill before a beautiful lunch at the football clubrooms. The afternoon run was back to Healesville via Gembrook and Cockatoo, through some hilly

but very scenic countryside. Cal hitched a lift in the 1913 Wolseley while I went in a 1913 Overland. A major clutch problem ended the Overland’s weekend at Cockatoo, so we both enjoyed the last part of the trip in the Wolseley. Unfortunately we couldn’t stay for the dinner that night or Sunday’s run, but it had been very enjoyable while we were there. Brendan Walsh
