A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband sneaking around with a fly swatter. “What are you doing”, she asked. “Hunting flies”, he responded. “Oh! Killing any?” she asked. “Yep, three males, two females”, he replied. Intrigued, she asked, “How can you tell them apart?” He responded “Three were on a beer can, two were on the phone.”

Unfortunately Lindsay didn’t have time to do a President’s report this month. He’s busy checking out the Gunbarrel Hwy but will be back in time for the July meeting.

The weather’s been going downhill over the last month or so, and with it the number of events that we attend. Some of our members even head off to warmer areas for extended holidays! I hope they all enjoy their time away.

As noted on page 7, Phil is planning to run a rally to the Sapphire Coast in 2017. But one rally isn’t enough – there are usually enough members wanting to tour long distance that we can fill two rallies (or even three in 2015!) If you’d like to run one of these rallies, bring your ideas to the June club meeting. You might even find other members wanting to help you organise it!

The Swap Meet is only 13 weeks away and sites are selling well. The draft rosters are in this Journal. Please check where and when you are rostered and make sure you’re there on time. If you can’t make it for any reason (or if you’re not in there and can help out) please contact the organisers as soon as possible. It’s the biggest day of the year for our club and the only one where every member is expected to do their bit.

I put a wanted ad in the Journal a while ago for old Australian car magazines. A big thank you to those members who have found some for me, either at mates’ rates or even free! Keep them coming!

Don’t forget to let me know if you’d like early access to the Drivers Journal via the internet. I send out an email a few days before the meeting so there are no delays due to Australia Post. You can still get a paper copy if you like, either by mail or picked up at the meeting.

See you at the meeting. Don’t forget to wear your name badge so everyone knows who you are, and turn off your mobile phone!

Brendan Walsh

Following recent discussions at General and Committee meetings regarding the numbers of new member applications, the Committee proposes to move a motion at the July General Meeting that:

The Club caps its numbers at 250 family memberships. When this number is reached, it will establish a waiting list for prospective members.

This matter will be discussed at the June and July meetings before a vote is taken at the July meeting.

AOMC Delegates’ meeting, Moorabbin – 16th May 2016 The first guest speakers at the May Delegates meeting were Gerard

Waldron of the Australian Road Research Bureau who spoke on the future of motoring. Very interesting. Imagine? Road freight being moved by driverless trucks, with no cabins, travelling on our freeways in numbers of 3 or 4 at one second or a metre apart. Or driving to the door of your shopping centre, climb out of your car and tell the car to park itself. Do your shopping then call the car on your phone to meet you at the door of the centre. Don’t laugh, these ideas are being trialled in Europe at the moment. The idea is to eliminate the NUT behind the wheel.

The second speaker was Matthew Lambert on “Risk Management”.

Motor homes AOMC has been asked by VicRoads to poll Clubs on this issue. They mooted that a 25 year old motor home would be OK, but a 25 year old vehicle that is converted to a motor home at a later stage would not be acceptable. At present old buses if altered (ie had a seat removed) are required to have VASS inspection. We believe that the Club’s policy on motor homes be recorded on this poll. Your concerns about misuse were not addressed.

The Club can have a list of current CPS permits from VicRoads. Details on how to apply are in the May AOMC Newsletter.

The Classic Showcase held at Flemington on April 16th had over 800 vehicles on show.

Changes to the Federal Government Car laws planned: 1. Personal import of new motor vehicles. 2. Improvements to existing schemes for specialist and non-standard vehicles. 3. Removal of $12,000 special duty on imported used vehicles.

The next Delegates’ meeting will be held in Seymour for a trial. Graeme and Richard

**Club Run, Swanpool – Sunday 21st August 2016 The 2016 Bald Archy Prize exhibition is controversial, critical and above all very, very, comical.

The annual exhibition has been described as the irreverent alternative to the Archibald Prize and Australia’s most audacious comic art prize, and showcases comical and satirical images of well known Australians. This year’s exhibition has been described by director and founder Peter Batey OAM as “one of the best years ever”. Now in its 23rd year, the exhibition features 45 works from a variety of artists and features a number of diverse subjects. There is the usual smattering of works depicting our politicians, with an array of sporting luminaries also being the subject of the satirical swipe of the artist’s brush. The winner of the $10,000 prize will be announced in Sydney on 22nd July.

Depart Club Rooms 9.30am. Route: head East Midland Hwy, Nalinga S.O - Cowans Floodway 1km T.R. River Rd to Baddaginnie (tea stop, toilets) continue to Swanpool Memorial Hall. Entry Fee: Adults $5 – Con $4. Picnic and BBQ facilities available.

You don’t need to have much detail sorted out yet, just a general route and where you might stay overnight. Accommodation is usually the factor that limits how many can attend – we normally have plenty of members that want to go! There may also be some other members that might want to help run your rally.

Ladies’ Day Out, Bendigo – Wednesday 11th May 2016

A combined group of ladies from the car club and the Kyabram art group had a lovely day out in Bendigo. We checked out the Marilyn Monroe exhibition, which is highly recommended for a visit before it leaves the area. We all enjoyed the old film clips and a really close look at all the magnificent costumes from her various films.

A lovely lunch at the RSL, then on for some retail therapy at the Bendigo Knitting Mills, then the Pottery to look at the antiques and craft pieces on sale there. And of course, lots of chat and cups of tea.

Looking at another outing in October before the weather gets too warm – some suggestions at this stage are Beechworth and Benalla. We can take our classic cars for this.

Club Run to Euroa (National Motoring Heritage Day) – Sunday 15th May 2016 One of those enjoyable days when everything went right: the weather was ideal, Sue’s exquisite quilt

display was excellent!!! And Bruce and Sue’s Euroa home “Calrossie” (built c.1900) created a lot of interest. The “axe man” (next door) opened his museum/workshop, displaying a fascinating range of axe

blades and handles along with other items of times gone by! Total funds raised between the two clubs (the Alpine Country Car Club. Jamieson) for donation to the Granite Hill (local) Aged Care Centre was just over $200! Many thanks to Bruce and Sue, a great morning! And of course the axe man!

Benalla was our afternoon venue for the sole purpose (apart from the drive) to see the local street art (murals,14 all told) located within an easy walking distance of the CBD. My advice; not to be missed, world class art!!!

Cadillac LaSalle Club run, Templestowe – 15th May 2016 I don’t get to many Cadillac LaSalle Club events because most of them are in

and around Melbourne, but I though this one was worth a special trip as it was featuring Cadillac’s “companion make”, LaSalle.

The LaSalle was a lower-priced vehicle built by Cadillac from 1927 to 1940. The management at GM had decided that there was too large a price gap between Buick and Cadillac, at a time when there was a very clear price ladder for the vehicle makes built by GM. LaSalles were powered by a Cadillac V8 each year except for 1934-36, when they had straight 8 engines. During this period, Cadillacs were powered by V8, V12 or even V16 engines.

From 1927 to 1935, GM exported around 275 complete LaSalles to Australia. From 1936 to 1940, chassis, engines and some panels were shipped here and GM-Holdens completed the assembly. Altogether, about 600 LaSalles came to Australia, so they’re not a car you see at car shows very often.

The get-together started at Westerfold Park in Templestowe, where about 40 club members assembled. There were only five LaSalles there, plus a couple of pre-war and post-war Cadillacs. After a couple of hours of talking cars, the group headed off for lunch at St Andrews. I headed in a different direction, as Callum was playing basketball in Bentleigh.

Even though numbers weren’t high, it was still good to catch up with other Club members and talk about our favourite cars!

Saturday Social Day, Clubrooms – 21st May 2016Another great social day had by 19 members as we gathered for a get together and chat.

A big welcome to our two new members that attended. It was lovely that Max and Colleen made the special trip out, it was so nice to see them after such a long time.

We enjoyed a lovely BBQ cooked by John and Mick, with a variety of salads brought by all the members. John chatted about the history of all the Mustangs he has owned. Colleen brought along two model cars and John and Sandra brought along their Japan photo books from their last three trips.

Happy and safe travels for all our members heading up north for the winter – see you in a couple of months.

Next Saturday get together is on 18th June 2016 from 10am-2pm. Please bring a casserole.

Historic Racing, Winton Motor Raceway – 28th-29th May 2016 The weather forecast leading up to this year’s Winton

Historics was a bit concerning. It was predicted to be cold with the possibility of showers on Friday and Saturday. Sunday was supposed to be similarly cold but maybe not wet. Fortunately it turned out better than that. It was still cool but there was no rain for both days – very good conditions for historic racing.

I was really looking forward to the day, as Min had offered me a lift in the Bugatti. That would make a good day into a great day! We headed off at about 9am and sat comfortably on 90-100km/h on the open road.

The crowd was good and the variety of cars racing and on display was as good as ever. The organisers have been highlighting motoring anniversaries in recent years, which usually results in a bigger display by the related clubs. This year included the 90th anniversary of the Bugatti Type 35 World Championship, so there were seven Bugattis competing. You don’t see that at Winton very often!

Other unusual sights included a group of five high-wheelers, veteran American cars with stage-coach style wheels. These were popular in rural America where the roads were pretty ordinary and ground clearance was a big advantage.

The parade lap of historic vehicles at lunch-time seems to be getting bigger and bigger every year – the cars filled almost the whole track and included everything from high-wheelers and trucks, to caravans and bubble cars!

The carpark had the usual variety of interesting and unusual cars mixed in with the more familiar ones that we see regularly. Overall, it was a great day.

2016 RACV Fly the Flag Western Tour – “A Bloke in a Moke” – 13th-19th March 2016

Continued from last month’s Journal.

The truck museum in Colac was very interesting with, what I would consider, some very rare and unusual vehicles on display.

At our overnight stay in Geelong, we were right next to a couple, David and Brenda, from Gippsland in their 1968 Mustang. They had a few minor hiccups at the start of the tour. As they were leaving home, the fan seized, the driver’s door was scratched by a stray dog and the rear view mirror fell off. Apart from these minor dilemmas, their tour had been trouble free. David’s son is a spray painter, so the scratch wasn’t going to be an issue, as his son had originally sprayed the entire car when it was first restored. Our friends from NSW were in the same caravan park, but a few of their number were still feeling ill from the night at Warrnambool.

At the Flag off at Geelong, we assembled all the Minis and one Moke for a photo shoot. This would be the most Minis that have been on the Tour and, as indicated, the only Moke.

On the way to Mooramong Homestead just out of Skipton, I pulled over to check directions when I was overtaken by two MGBs and two RACV vans. Immediately I reasoned that they must know where they were going, so I tagged along behind. Guess what? They all missed the turn off to the homestead and stopped on the side of the road about 5 k’s past the entrance. After a “U” turn we all found the homestead. It was a very hot day and the pool was put to very good use by a few of the tour participants who had the foresight to pack their swimming costumes. After a pleasant lunch it was off to Ballarat for a two night stay.

At this point I should expand a little more about our friends from N.S.W. I will start with Alastair Browne J. P. Alastair is always, and I mean always, just the best company and I certainly look forward to catching up with him each year. Now Alistair is an exceptionally engaging gentleman who at one stage in his eventful life was an English Policeman. He saw the light and came to Australia, the best country in the World, where he carved out a career in the security industry. He would be best described as a mixture of “James Bond” and “Arthur Daley”, although it would be up for debate what percentage is “James Bond” and what percentage is “Arthur Daley”. He is one of life’s great characters and he was accompanied on the tour this year by his brother, Dr. Chris Browne who had

come all the way from England to participate. It is probably somewhat of an understatement to say that Alastair is an engaging character, as his business card has the following headlines: “Honourable Rogue; Classic Car enthusiast; Beer Analyst; Playboy Selection Panel; and Man of Letters.” That’s Alastair on the left and his brother, Dr. Chris on the right, dressed up as the “Blues Brothers” on the last night.

For the past few recent tours he has come in a 1980 XD Fairmont Ghia, which is a very good reliable vehicle. In the more distant past he has come in a Renault, and at the

present time he is waiting to be shipped from England a very rare Marcos powered by a six cylinder Volvo motor and automatic transmission. See the photos below.

Bill Bush is a retired N.S.W. Policeman who has also worked as an investigator following up breaches of copyright for Australian music groups. He had lots of interesting stories to relate and has rubbed shoulders with all of the big names in the Australian music industry. Bill has always been a car enthusiast and his current car is a 1980 XD Falcon with a worked 351. It is a very standard, straight looking car but a real sleeper.

Allana, also from N.S.W., has quite a collection of cars and is a real automotive enthusiast. On the tour she was driving her 1980 Porsche 911 SC which she has owned since 1981. The vehicle has been meticulously maintained and has a mere 158,000 kilometres on the odometer. That’s Allana dressed up as David Bowie for the last night.

Ron Paul and his wife Barb, also from N.S.W., came in their immaculate EH Holden Premier. Ron purchased the car out of registration in Wagga in 1999. He replaced everything but the hood lining in the 12

months that it took to restore. Ron, from memory, was a fitter and turner, so he had an all round mechanical knowledge. Accordingly he did most of the work on the EH himself. He spent about $15,000 on the restoration and the only outside tasks, not done by Ron, were the spray painting and upholstery. Ron found some rare parts at swap meets and many of the old parts were reconditioned and returned to service. The car was re-registered with its original registration number around 2000, as the original plates were in the boot at the time of purchase. Since the restoration, Ron and Barb have enjoyed the EH and clocked up over 70,000 trouble free miles travelling to rallies all around Australia.

Two of our Victorian friends, who have a close association with the N.S.W. crew, are Russell and Keith, who live near Frankston. Russell was a flight steward for Qantas before he retired and has travelled all over the world. His car is a 1976 Mercedes Benz 280S sedan that Russell purchased new in 1976 for over $22,000. Just think

about that for a minute. In 1976 a new manual XB Falcon GT four door sedan was just over $8,000, our first home in Boronia was $29,000, so $22,000 was an absolute fortune. The car is a very unusual colour and Russell was

approached at one car display by a member of the public claiming to be a past employee of Mercedes Benz who told him, among other things, that the car was not an original Mercedes Benz colour. Russell, who is always just an absolute gentleman, politely pointed out that the car was an original colour and that he had owned the car from new. The car to this point has 145,000 km on the odometer and up to Thursday on the RACV tour had not so much as a scratch. Unfortunately at Ballarat, a careless truck driver, ran into the nearside rear of Russell’s car while he was stopped at a set of traffic lights. That’s what you call really bad luck.

Friday night was the fancy dress night and boy there were some excellent outfits. My favourite was “Cousin Itt.” “Gomez Adams” had gone to a lot of trouble to construct a remote controlled “Cousin Itt” who caused much hilarity by travelling in and around the assembled party goers. It took a long time to work out who was actually controlling “Cousin Itt,” which added to the fun.

One of the couples in fancy dress had such good masks that nobody recognised them! Luckily they were wearing their tour id’s.

The couple on the right are Kim Kardashian and her security, a.k.a. Ian and Sue McKenzie. Kevin couldn’t make the last night, as he had a wedding to attend in Echuca. We had originally planned to go as “double white lines,” dressed in our white spray painter’s overalls but, undeterred, I went as a “single white line” instead. Another terrific group of outfits were two of the mini owners and their respective wives/partners who went as bunches of grapes. Their outfits were covered in balloons of the same colour – very clever indeed.

The next morning it was back to the Ultima Reception Centre for the final lunch and presentations. I know that the Austin 1800 received an award, but we didn’t get a chance to chat to the owner during the Tour. Hopefully we will catch up with him next year and learn all about the Austin.

I only have one criticism of the RACV Tour and that is that the week goes too fast! All things considered, the Moke went pretty well, and when the speedometer was working, I worked out that it was getting 40 m.p.g. Congratulations to the All British Classics Club Car Club of Victoria and the RACV for running such a great tour once more. The countdown is now on for the 2017 RACV Tour!
