Community members and service providers in Gunbalanya came together on Thursday, June 1 to spread an important message – ‘no more violence’.

Approximately 150 adults and children joined in the community march, led by ‘NO MORE’ campaign founder Charlie King.

The campaign highlights the significant problem of domestic violence and uses the vehicle of sport to spread the message that it needs to stop.

The march is also an effective way to spread the powerful message and get people to commit to reducing family violence by coming

together, linking arms and saying “no more”.

The Gunbalanya school, service providers and local organisations in the community joined in the march, with the night patrol team leading the way and all shops and organisations closing their doors during the event.

With Gunbalanya’s first ‘NO MORE’ Campaign march held last year, Charlie believes the

message is getting across.“We did this march 12

months ago and there is 30 per cent more here this year, and more kids,” he said.

“The school has obviously done something before today with the kids.”

Addressing the crowd, Charlie had one message to spread.

“The community owns the responsibility. We can stop the violence, it is not impossible,” he said.

“I am so proud of the community today. Your voices echoed throughout the community.”

The event also included friendly football matches with the local Gunbalanya football teams to conclude the day.

The event included the march around town, talks with school children, music by local musicians and a community barbecue.

REHABILITATION OF JABILUKA PRODUCES POSITIVE RESULTS

MINJILANG STUDENTS SHOWN CAREER PATHWAYS

There have been positive signs of regrowth and wildlife at Energy Resources of Australia’s Jabiluka revegetation site following the recent wet season.

Contractor Peter Christophersen of Kakadu Native Plants, was on site recently conducting weed control, when he spotted new Partridge pigeons hatching.

Work began on rehabilitating the disturbed land on the Jabiluka Mineral Lease in 2003 when the surface and sub-surface infrastructure was removed and the box-cut and decline were backfilled. In 2013, ERA committed to rehabilitating the Interim Water Management Pond.

The programme of work included removal of the pond liner and concrete spillway, relocation of waste rock stockpiles, re-grading of fill surfaces, and excavation work. The land was reshaped and re-contoured so that it was similar to the pre-mining landform.

Revegetation of the disturbed areas at the Jabiluka footprint took place in three stages over a decade. ERA formed a strategic partnership with a local indigenous

supplier Kakadu Native Plants, which raised saplings from seeds collected within the lease area.

In total, more than 16,000 stems were planted between 2005 and 2015, consisting of more than two dozen different species of native plants. Ongoing weed, fire and water quality management is in place at Jabiluka.

The world-class Jabiluka deposit, which is under long term care and maintenance and will not be developed by ERA without the consent of the Mirarr Traditional Owners.

Rehabilitation of Jabiluka revegetation site has seen positive signs recently including newly--hatched Partridge pigeons.

Selected students from Mamaruni School’s Pathways class took a trip to the Minjilang airstrip recently to explore the police plane and learn about being pilots and police officers.

During the visit, students were surprised to learn the plane can fly at a speed of 450km, it carries its fuel in its wings and that it is worth approximately 3 million dollars!

Students had a great time sitting in the cockpit, looking in the cargo hold and watching the plane take off.

This is the first of many community excursions for students to learn about various jobs that they may wish to pursue for their future.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR FISHERMEN

John Bray took up the role on 22 May 2017 and, following a two-day stopover in Darwin, has made his way out to Jabiru where he will live and work.

“My wife Katrina and I are very excited to come back to Jabiru,” Mr Bray said.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to work with the community in planning for the future.”

The Regional Director role has been created to support the work currently underway to plan for the future of Jabiru. John will lead a range of stakeholder engagement for the Northern Territory Government’s work, in better understanding economic development, population and infrastructure potential for Jabiru.

John also joins the Jabiru Stakeholder Group, comprising representatives from the NT Government, Australian Government, Energy Resources of Australia, Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation and Northern Land Council.

The group continues to meet every month, with John providing an important on-the-ground link between the group and the community in planning for the future of Jabiru.

John is working out of the Jabiru Training Centre and can be contacted via email ([email protected]) or phone (0429 061 764).

John has previously held senior positions within the NT and Queensland education departments, including as a Senior Policy Officer, Senior Director, Principal and Executive Principal. Most recently, John was the Director of Partnerships and Communication for the Stronger Smarter Institute.

Thirteen Maningrida fishermen have successfully completed a Certificate II in training course recently.

The two-week training course was jointly delivered by NT Fisheries Indigenous Development Unit and the Australian Maritime and Fisheries Academy at the request of local fishing licence holders and Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation.

The course provided an opportunity for the crew to learn practical skills, such as assembling and repairing damaged nets, cleaning

fish and to strengthen their knowledge of food regulations and safety practices. This will help them to operate more professionally.

The graduation ceremony was very well-attended with many family members present and of course, a fish barbecue for everyone.

The fishermen, supported by Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation, will keep on selling fish on market night every Thursday.

Funding was provided by the NTG Indigenous Responsive Program.

To celebrate their last three and a half years in Jabiru, Children’s Ground/Wurdurd Garriyigarrmerren held their farewell celebration at the Community Centre this week.

There was a jumping castle for the kids, Bininj Kunborrk, a performance by Black Rock Band and an award ceremony for early years and primary learners, children and young people that attend after hours, their staff members and community partners across the region. Jane Vadiveloo, CEO, especially thanked local organisations in the region for their outstanding support and contribution.

Children’s Ground will cease operations in Kakadu West Arnhem as of 30 June 2017.

The core funding for the program has been provided by the local Mirarr traditional owners via the Kakadu West Arnhem Social Trust, also established by the Mirarr. Due to changed circumstances and priorities, the Mirarr are no longer in a position to fund and support the Children’s Ground program. Alternative local service providers will continue key services and programs after 30 June 2017.

In a statement shared last month, Children’s Ground Chair, William Tilmouth, said “I give heartfelt thanks to the Bininj people for their warmth, their friendship and for seizing of the moment. It has been great to see people walk tall in their culture, have hope and to have belief in their lives.”

Children’s Ground continue their work with four communities in Central Australia and with families in the Top End that have requested Children’s Ground continue to support them on their traditional lands outside of Kakadu.

MANINGRIDA CONGRATULATED FOR EFFORTS IN CLEANING UP

BoAt RAMP uPGRADE At PoPulAR FIShING SPotOne of the Territory’s

most popular fishing spots will become more accessible with construction beginning on the $2.3 million new Shady Camp boat ramp.

The project is part of the Territory Government’s $50 million investment for recreational fishing infrastructure over the next five years.

Minister for Primary Industry Ken Vowles said fishing is a big part of the Territory’s lifestyle, and infrastructure improvements such as this one helped keep long term residents here and create local jobs.

More than 20 new jobs have been created through the awarding of the tender to local company Aldebaran Contracting Pty Ltd - including eight new apprentices, of which two are Indigenous.

“We are investing in new infrastructure that will increase job opportunities and enhance recreational fishing in the Territory,” Mr Vowles said.

“The new Shady Camp boat ramp will create a more enjoyable fishing experience and improve safety, but has also seen the creation of local jobs.”

Amateur Fishermen's Association of the

Northern Territory Executive Officer David Ciaravolo welcomed the project and said he was pleased to see fishing projects progressing.

“Recreational fishing is a key part of the Territory lifestyle and we look forward to upgrades at fishing locations to create more user friendly experiences for recreational fishers into the future,” Mr Ciaravolo said.

Once complete - expected by the end of September - the Shady Camp boat ramp will be 60 metres long with dual lanes and a slip resistant concrete surface for safer launching.

The Jabiru Public Library joined in national simultaneous story time at 11am on Wednesday, May 24.

Every year a picture book by an Australian author and illustrator is read on the same day, at the same time all around the country. Community members, including the Jabiru childcare, enjoyed reading ‘The Cow Tripped Over the Moon’, followed by art activities.

Maningrida is in the 2017 Territory Tidy Towns program following the community’s efforts in two categories including 'Litter Control' and 'Community Participation'.

Keep Australia Beautiful Council NT Chief Executive Officer Heimo Schober visited Maningrida recently and commented that the community has demonstrated great improvements over the past six months.

“The team in Maningrida are doing an excellent job in tidying up their town,” Heimo said.

“Keep Australia Beautiful Council Northern Territory would certainly like to congratulate Maningrida for the fantastic combined efforts and achievements to date and we'd encourage the continuation in a positive direction.”

Heimo said it is great to see West Arnhem Regional Council leading the

way in partnership with CDP, store staff, school students and local residents who are becoming more involved in taking ownership and responsibility; creating individual and community pride.

Their combined efforts will achieve environmental benefits (respect for country), social benefits (combined community ownership and responsibility) but most importantly improved quality of life for 3000 people.

During his visit, Heimo delivered an educational and motivational session to the key stakeholders and the council workforce.

WARC staff also received certificates of appreciation for their efforts from Territory Tidy Towns.

“Keep up the great work Maningrida - we’re extremely proud of your efforts!”

Northern Territory police have been working closely with service providers in Warruwi to implement a Community Safety Action Plan (CSAP) within the region.

The CSAP defines four key priorities, including mutual respect and working in partnership, reducing domestic and family violence (including the abuse and neglect of children), reducing substance abuse; and improving community amenity.

Police and service providers will sign the CSAP, which

shows they are committed to working together with the police, the community and other service providers to

make the community safe and resilient.

Community leaders and stakeholders in Warruwi will

also sign the agreement and display stickers in prominent areas to spread the key messages.

Service providers, including night patrol and relieving police members in the community Merv Kazem and Deb Pascoe attended a training session recently about the CSAP and what it intends to achieve.

The important link in community safety by night patrol teams was reinforced and the team was also briefly shown the Speak Up program often delivered to students at schools.

The NT police wished to highlight the positive cooperation between police and community members in Warruwi who are working together.

CSAPs are being introduced throughout a number of communities.

SPORT AND RECREATION IN MINJILANG

JABIRu JoINS IN MIllIoN PAWS WAlKCongratulations

to everyone who competed and volunteered at the 2017 Kakadu Triathlon. It was fantastic to see the whole town cheering on the competitors and also giving so much towards the chosen charity CareFlight Helicopters. ERA is proud to support the event each year and I was really pleased to see so many ERA staff getting involved in this the 5 year anniversary event.

Thank you to everyone who came along last Saturday to the first ERA information day and Ranger mine tours for 2017. We had an overwhelming level of interest from local residents and visitors to the region and some great feedback.

If you weren’t able to make it, don’t worry we have three more open days coming up on Thursday 29 June, Saturday 29 July and Thursday 24 August. Pop into the

ERA Communities Office next to the supermarket and talk to Leona for more information.

Good luck tomorrow night to Katrina Bangay, Sharon Paulka and the Ranger Women’s Network who have been nominated for the 2017 Women in Resources Northern Territory awards. These awards recognise outstanding achievements in

contributing to a more diverse workforce and ERA is proud to support their nominations.

Finally, I would like to introduce our new ERA General Manager Operations Lesley Bryce who will commence at Ranger on 5 June. Lesley and her husband Gordon will be relocating from Kununurra to Jabiru this month, so if you see them around town say hi and introduce yourself.

Dog owners and canines of Jabiru came together to take part in the RSPCA’s Million Paws Walk on Sunday, May 21.

The event incorporated plenty of activities including the fastest eating dog competition, as well as competitions for the largest dog, smallest dog, scruffiest dog, best dressed, naughtiest dog, best behaved and most nervous.

There was also free soft drinks and a sausage sizzle available.

Organisers including Sandra Jaeschke,

Carmen Good and Sue McWhirter would like to thank everyone that participated, bought tickets, donated money, prizes and food.

They also wished to thank Morris Corp, Jabiru Firies (Jim and Treen), West Arnhem Regional Council, Jabiru Foodland, Aurora Kakadu Lodge, Marrawudi Gallery, Kakadu Tours and Travel, Two Rivers Newsagency, Peter Keepence Photography, BP, ERA, Carmen Good, Katrina Bangay, Katja’s Canines and Kakadu Contracting.

Community consultations kicked off in Maningrida last week to overhaul the NT Suicide Prevention Strategy.

The Assistant Minister for Suicide Prevention Ngaree Ah Kit said the Northern Territory has some of the highest rates of suicide in the country with many families impacted.

“Every suicide is a tragedy and the rates we have in the Northern Territory are unacceptable.

“The Territory Labor Government wants to halve suicide rates over the next decade,” Ms Ah Kit said.

“We know that Indigenous elders, organisations and communities have to be part of any viable solution.

“That’s why we are engaging and consulting across the region to build an inclusive policy.

“There are many organisations across the Territory doing important work in this space. As a government we need to know what’s working, where the gaps are and how we can best support programs and improvements.

“We need all sectors of the community to get involved,” Ms Ah Kit said.

“Interested parties can provide feedback or request the discussion paper by calling the Mental Health Directorate on 08 89992553 or emailing [email protected].

Nourlangie Safari Camp, here is 9SLK Is anybody listening? (My radio code) From the Diaries of Flemming Jensen 1968-1969

In the previous episode, Allan arrives to the camp with two guests as well as letters from Alice and Flemming’s father.

Friday, 25th (Anzac Day) Today was the first time, I

went out with two guests on the lake and it went really well.

Unfortunately it was the wife who caught the two big barramundi of seven and twenty two pounds. The man who is a professional fisherman felt his pride go so he spent most of the day on the lake alone, also to try to catch a fish.

He succeeded in the end but the catch weighed no more than five pounds and it bothered him a lot.

After we had eaten one of the two fish Val or ‘the Queen of the lake’ as she then was called, we went up to the Jim Jim store. After a few beers Allan gave a fanfare for the twenty people who were here.

It was Anzac Day and there was a good atmosphere. I must say that the day was a celebration and I was a little tired of today’s many experiences and I was happy and content to go to bed.

Saturday, 26th April

Today, the husband shot a young buffalo. It gave him little satisfaction for the defeat on the lake over the last few days.

Later I took them out on the lake to fish. They seemed to like it. The last few days I have got an impression of what life is here in the season and it seemed to me to be a bit of a race. Up early and otherwise

be available for late nights and constantly try to do the best for the guests so they feel comfortable.

This is the business process and there is nothing unusual in that, I just think that it is not something for me for a whole season.

We had decided to have a really cozy evening on top of the latter day bustle but we were certainly surprised. About eight a clock we had barely finished eating and we were visited by six people in three cars.

Two of them were Allan’s friends and the others were simply running wild. Of course they were welcome and we had six more to share barramundi and chips.

Later Allan and Toby entertained us by playing the trumpet and one specifically an Aboriginal horn-like instrument. Later I heard that it’s called a didgeridoo. Allan`s guests tried to see if they could get sound out of this special long Aboriginal horn, but they did not really succeed. It was past midnight when I started to pack my gear. I realized I would not

get much time in the morning.

Sunday, 27th April

A huge pile of dishes awaited us next morning. I was up at six and only got four hours sleep.

Everybody was served a decent breakfast before we all left. By the way it was the first passenger car to the camp in the season. Two Volkswagens and a Vauxhall Viva!

I had expected some four wheel drive cars. Now we started on the nearly 400km trip along miserable dusty roads. Allan is a good driver. He reported that he drove ‘Brengun jeeps’ during the war in North Africa and it says a whole lot.

I hope that I can do it as well as he does when I return on Tuesday or Wednesday to do the trip back.

It was late before we reached Darwin and it took some time before Allan succeeded in finding a place where I could sleep. It was with one of his comrades who had a caravan. It was a funny little guy who had been drinking all day so we had a mighty enjoyable

time. Before I went to sleep I took a well-deserved bath. I was that dusty and dirty from the long trip that I had to have a bath to forget the trip many hardships.

Monday, 28th April

Allan picked us up and together we went into town to get some breakfast.

Here I met Pat who had changed a lot. She had changed into fine clothing, powder and lipstick and whatever else it needs.

Later I was staying with a senior teacher and his wife who was a nurse. They lived in Nightcliff and they are very nice and wonderful people and we’ve had a lot to talk about. Today I bought a new pair of shoes, a shirt and a mosquito net. Things I really needed when I was out there.

I spent a lot of money on beer, soda, chocolate and things like that. Things that I have not had for a long time but soon I must put a stop to my excesses if I want to keep going without the need to work again.

I also met the couple who are employed as the new housekeeper and handyman. Together we are going to Nourlangie on Wednesday.

I have had a feeling that I would let Allan down if I did not come back for the season. This has changed and I think I can go to New Zealand as I had planned.

Allan is doing all right without me and that is the way it has to be. In the evening I went to the cinema to see ‘The Graduate.’ It was a good movie.

In the next episode, Flemming receives advice which confirms his plans to start his trip back home.

Royal Life Saving visited Jabiru this week for a free active family fun day at the pool.

There was a good turn out at the event which included ‘come and try’ lifesaving techniques, aquatic activities for the young ones, prizes and a barbecue.

There was also a special visit from Boof the Barra.

AFL teams in Gunbalanya took part in a friendly football tournament in support of the ‘NO MORE’ campaign event in the community on Thursday June 1.

The linking of arms is a symbolic statement to show that everyone who links up is committed to ending the violence no matter where or who they are.

When the players link arms

they’re raising awareness about the issue and sending a strong message to everyone that family violence is never acceptable.

Thanks to Team Health and Maningrida crew for helping organise the footy match which was an important part of the event. More than 80 Australian women and men were killed last year by family violence.
