What a 75th anniversary celebration!

I don‟t know the total count but the ballroom was filled to capacity.

This was a well planned event and

“Thank You” to everyone who

contributed!

The other component to this event was the unveiling of the history book. I had the opportunity to review the

book ahead of time in preparation for the television interviews. The book is as much of a history of Gulfport and sailing on the Gulf Coast as it is a

history of the Gulfport Yacht Club. This book

memorializes this history that would have been eventually lost. Dr. Tommy Hewes and Martha

Mabey deserve a thank you from all of us.

Needless to say you will miss a real opportunity if you don‟t buy one of these limited editions that are selling fast.

This month‟s bullet points:

We finally have restrooms and showers near the “C” pier. Better late than never!

Don‟t forger the general membership meet-ing Tuesday, October 20th.

Thanks for your participation in our club‟s events.

Fall is here and FALL means FUN at GYC. We have Dance Lessons and a Swing Dance scheduled for Friday October 2, 2009. We have Football, both College and Pro’s, with a Bar Food Menu and Special Drink prices. Football Squares for most games, Don’t be left out!! Come join the FUN!! Also, this is the month for the Madisonville Wooden Boat Festival, October 17, 18. And on the 30th of October is an evening for all ages with a great show band; Barbara & Company! The Annual Membership Meeting is on October 20, 2009 at 6:00pm. Our “Thank-You Thursdays” whereby we say Thank You to the Membership for their outstanding support to the Club, was so well received in September, we have decided to continue the “Thank-You Thursdays” with the Half-Priced Lunch Buffet on all “FIVE” Thursdays in October. THANK-YOU!!! The GYC Logo Shop has really changed as of our 75th Anniversary. Come see the expanded list of items and consider the up-coming Holiday Season. Please note the hours of operation and understand that the Shop has expanded to the point it will be, quite often, located in the Crews Room on the 3rd floor next to the Ballroom. The Wednesday Pasta Nights have been extremely successful and we don’t want to change the FUN-FILLED FAMILY event. However, we are considering expanding this Member Service just a bit. We will appreciate your input before we decide to expand. We are considering setting up our charcoal grills on the South Balcony so we can char grill to order. Our plans would be to let you select the steak you would like, tell us how you want it cooked, you get YOUR salad, potato and fixings, and ENJOY!! Please let me know your thoughts on if you would like this additional service or not?? THANKS!! A SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: The Governing Board, after a large amount of study and research has approved the use of Credit Cards for the convenience of the membership. There will be initially, the ability to use Credit Cards in the Office for paying your monthly bills. As we get the System ordered and connected, the convenience of using Credit Cards will be expanded to all areas of the club. There will be a convenience fee added to cover the cost that the Club incurs for processing Credit Cards. NOVEMBER: Daylight saving time ends 1 Nov, Veterans Day 11 Nov, Thanksgiving 26 Nov 2009, and another Dance!! ENJOY!!

News from the House Committee:

House operations showed a profit of $5,915 for August. The Year to

Date profit is $45,521; the house operations are $57,617 ahead of the Year to Date budget. Total revenues in August for food and bar were $74,665. "Outside event" revenues for August were approximately 22% of revenue of food and bar.

The Chart Room now has drink specials, including 2 for 1 well drinks and bar

wine, on Saturday and

Sunday (2 p.m. to close) and on Monday (5 p.m. to close). In addition, the Chart Room now has a bar menu, offering appetizer-type food every evening but Wednesday and Friday evenings. Also, the committee is looking into having Chart Room entertainment on certain Saturday evenings this fall.

Thank you for your continued suggestions and your use of the club.

October 15th 6-9pm

Greetings from the Entertainment Committee. Your support of the events this summer has been outstanding and I really appreciate the Staff‟s hard work and all of the membership for coming out when we have had live mu-sic events. We recently had Lisa Mills and Cheap Thrills in the Chart Room Live and I want to thank Paul Newton for helping me to book Lisa and promote a great night. The band and Lisa chilled the crowd late into the evening and the dance floor stayed packed. As we roll into the Fall we have some more great events to look forward to.

Friday, October 2nd, our Fall Swing Dinner Dance will be in the

Ballroom featuring a fantastic menu and a performance by the William Sackett Swing Orchestra. William is a good friend and his group features some of the Coast‟s most talented musicians. I know it will be a special night and hope that you will attend.

Also on October 30th, we have Barbara and Co. performing for all ages

in the Ballroom with a night of disco, 70‟s funk, and party music.

My appreciation goes out to Dickie Dunaway for organizing some great

gridiron events in the Chart Room this Fall.

I am still checking the calendar to make sure that our Chart Room Live

nights coincide with the best weekends as far as the football schedule, so with that said, stay tuned for some more entertainment in the Chart Room.

Check your E-Log and check your table in the dining room for flyers and notices about upcoming events. Thanks again for your support of the GYC.

September Sunset Sunday

From the GYC Archives:

a Picture from the Past

Auxiliary Happenings…

What a delightful September Luncheon!

Margaret Blount was the high winner at the

morning bridge. Second High was

Margaret Cannon. As the ladies enjoyed a

pasta dinner with a delicious shrimp and

artichoke sauce, members were treated to

a wine tasting event by the distributor for

Barefoot Wines, Donny Daquin. The ladies

tasted the different wines, including a

Moscato, a Riesling and a Chardonnay as

Mr. Daquin answered many questions with

regard to the serving of wine, especially

focusing on the type of glass used for the

best enjoyment of the wine served.

Large wooden sailboat table decorations

which were made by Mary Frances Martin

many years ago were displayed for the la-

dies. They had been taken by Bobbye

Carraway for restoration just before

Hurricane Katrina. They were recently

restored by Stuart & Sue Frentz and

presented back to the club at the 75th

Anniversary Celebration on September

17th. Hostesses for this month‟s event

decorated the tables with a very

appropriate setting for our luncheon with

clusters of grapes centered on each table

around a bottle of wine which was given as

door prizes. The hostesses were Ruthie

Kennedy, Nena Revon and Rosemary

Tournillon.

You will not want to miss our October

Luncheon on the 28th which will feature a

Fall Style Show with the latest in fall

fashion.

Luncheon on the Monday before so please let her know by then so that she can provide an accurate number

for the lunch menu.

Original Trout King Recaptures Title!

On September 11th – 13th the GYC Powerboat Committee hosted its annual Chandeleur Rendezvous at Little Smack Channel. With “Trout King” honors up for grabs, only the serious fisher-men made the journey to the once sacred land and endured hours and hours of relentless squalls in search of the dreaded spotted sea bass. On Friday morning, the Madame II, Ring Dang Doo, Doubleshot and Rufnek II departed GYC harbor heading for Chandeleur. Once anchored in Little Smack (for those who still had anchors) the fishing began. Saturday was filled with thunderstorms that brought plenty of wind and rain. It wasn‟t until that afternoon be-fore any fishing could resume. The „weigh-in‟ and happy hour was hosted aboard the Rufnek II where a special elixir was con-cocted to relieve the pain from the hard day of fishing. After the well enjoyed therapy session, the awards began with 2009 Trout King Trophy being awarded to its original recipient, Dr. Pat Pierce. Also awarded, was the “Most Trout Award”, which went to Brandon Singletary, son of Doug Singletary, who landed a whopping two trout….not bad for his first time out at Chandeleur!

Special thanks to everyone who attended and especially Ferrell Alman who graciously donated prizes for the event. With plenty of trout being left out there, next year‟s event

promises to be even more exciting!

Michael G. Hage

The Ladies’ Auxiliary enjoyed a wine tasting event on September 23.

GYC kids had their own celebration for the 75th Anniversary! Zocchi the Magician entertained;

kids made t-shirts, bracelets and boats!

Race Updates

Race Week & GORC at BYC

GYC placed 3rd Overall in the GYA Capdevielle. Team GYC consisted of Sam Hopkins Jr., Raemie Ladner, Sam Hopkins, Sr. (Saturday), John Watson Galloway and Sam Vasquez (Sunday). Sailing con-ditions were perfect all weekend at the BYC's new club house. Sailing on big boats (GORC), both Hugh Hawkins and Claire Yoste crewed aboard Tin Man to help them finish 3rd in class while Sam V. &

John Watson skippered/ crewed aboard Sapphire on Saturday.

Liptons at BucYC

GYC finishes 10th Overall. With light fluky winds, racing was very challenging throughout the entire La-

bor Day weekend. Many lead changes took place during each of the four races making it a nail bighting experience for both sailors and spectators. Winning team from Bay Waveland Yacht Club was not de-

termined the winner until the last three boat lengths of the last race! First race Claire Yoste, Sam Vasquez & Raemie Ladner finished 9th. Ana Galye Christian, Sam Hopkins & Raemie took top GYC Honors with a 4th place finish in the second. Little Sam, Big Sam and Alexander Hopkins had a difficult third race and scored a 16

th. John Watson Galloway

& Sam Vasquez rolled the dice on the last leg to finish 12th. It was in a good weekend for the young skippers and eye

opener to the elders. Next year will be better. Congratulations BWYC!

Back to School at PontYC

With storms ripping across the lake all weekend, racing was very difficult for both Race Committee and sailors. GYC‟s Capdevielle team consisted of Sam Jr, Alexander and Sam Hopkins, Sr. sailing on Saturday while John Watson Gallo-way and H. Hewes sailing on Sunday. Overall GYC finished 6

th place.

Sam Vasquez won the two boat Finn class while Hugh Hawkins placed 2nd

in the Laser Radial Class. John Harrison Doucet finished2

nd overall in the Jr Sunfish Class. GYC‟s Opti turnout was great but were unable to get any races off due

to the challenging weather. It should be noted that Opti sailors Chris Hoppe, Louis Doucet, Barrow Haw-kins and Dawson Doucet (sailing the Open Bic) were ready to sail but the Race Committee elected not to sail due to the bad weather. Sunday Meredith Price & Sam Vasquez sailed aboard "Gritz" to help secure their win in the J/30 Class. All

in all a good weekend!

GYC to host 2010 GYA Winter Meeting January 8 – 10th

.

We hope that GYC members will attend the basic Race Management Seminar scheduled for Friday January 8

th. Other meetings and boat demos will be held during the day on Saturday the

9th with Silent Auction and Awards Banquet held that evening. Please check GYC‟s sailing page for

more details.

Website Updates

Please check the sailing page for full regatta reports, Adult Sailing Dates, and the Fall & Spring Jr. Sailing Dates.

Jr. Activities Thanks to Linda Ishee, Bobbye Carraway, Linda Domino and Mary Anne Barkley for over-

seeing and judging the 75th Anniversary Art Contest for GYC Children and Youth! The

winning artwork was displayed during our anniversary celebrations and we’re so proud of

our young artists! Big thanks to Liz Flatt who coordinated much of the celebrations!

All GYC juniors are encouraged to bring their parents to our party on the 3rd floor on Octo-

ber 30. More than a Halloween bash, Barbara & Co. will keep everyone on their toes danc-

ing! In keeping with the season, there will be prizes for parents & children in costume! Go

through the “haunted maze” - IF YOU DARE!

Check the e-Log for Jr. Bingo and Movie Night coming up in November!

The Gulfport Yacht Club 2nd

Annual Madisonville Rendezvous

Hosted by the GYC Powerboat Committee

October 8-9-10-11, 2009 On the Tchefuncte River Madisonville, Louisiana

In 2008 a hardy fleet of GYC vessels left the club at 0700 hours on a Thursday morning bound for The Tchefuncte River in Louisiana for the Madisonville Wooden Boat Show. By arrival our armada numbered 7 vessels that docked side-by-side for the long weekend of fun by GYC members and many thousands of our closest friends. This year the fleet will depart again at 0700 hours on Thursday, October 8 again en route to this great event. We are hoping for even more participation by the wonderful wooden vessels of GYC. Again, we are encouraging those GYC boaters that subscribe to the Plastic Boat Society to attend in support of the more gentile, traditional wooden boat owners who will be competing in the show. If as a non-participant in the show you are interested in a slip, please call Marina Del Ray at (985)845-4474. There are several hotels available in Mandeville and Covington nearby if you are interested in accommodations ashore.

As verified in 2008 -The party will be great!

GYC Vessels lined up at the show in 2008

Sailors and most wooden boat owners know that the fun is in the voyage as well as the destination. This outing gives us the opportunity to enjoy both.

The float plan is to cast off on Thursday morning as early as possible, probably around 7:00 AM. This of course will be dependant on the weather. This year we will run to-gether at approximately 8 knots-be prepared with clean props and we will do our best to stay together. Upon land-ing, we will be moored together as a group at the show.

For the return voyage, you can leave your boat at the show site, with power, and bring it home anytime over the next week.

If you are into yachting, fun, food, fellowship, friends, entertainment, and spirits – put these dates on your calendar. If you do not like these types of activities – you may need medical attention. Parties will be scheduled and non-scheduled (impromptu). Come one, come all for a hardy good time hosted by the Pirates of GYC. (Costumes encouraged but not required) Known party schedule will be posted at GYC, unknown schedule will not.

A Truth that is posted aboard the fine wooden vessel Alligator:

“If God had intended for man to have fiberglass boats – he would have created a fiberglass tree.”

New Member Incentive Program! Earn a $500 Credit!

As you well know, membership in the Gulfport Yacht Club is a valuable and rewarding investment. With

our new Club building and the revitalization of the city, we are looking forward to many years ahead of

sailing, boating and socializing.

As we approach our membership cap, the Board is offering members in good standing an opportunity to

invite friends and colleagues to apply for membership in the GYC and avoid a waiting list. For a limited

time, you can earn a $500 Incentive Certificate, good for food and beverage purchases at the Club.

Potential members will be considered through the usual GYC procedures.

The program is simple:

Be the primary sponsor for a new member application

Return the new member application

Return the Incentive Certificate complete with your name, member number and date

The Certificates are activated upon our receipt of the new member’s payment of the initiation fee.

This incentive program is valid until January 15, 2010, or until 25 new member applications have been

received, whichever comes first. Members are eligible for one certificate only.

Thank you for helping our Club maintain its vitality, growth and prosperity. Questions?
