The Guvnor..a perfect host! The 14th June 2009 was indeed a special day for the small Guitarist TV crew.

Our assignment was to film as many guitarists as we could in our allocated 12 hour slot at the London International Music Show.

Cameraman Adam Mann, a recent grad-uate of Northampton University, joined our squad in 2008 and has worked with me on location many times, the most memorable being the Joe Satriani shoot in 2008 at the Birmingham Symphony Hall.

Pete Caldwell, a dear friend and guitarist joined us as presenter and looked after the interviews. Pete interviewed Joe Satriani at the historic launch of Guitarist TV in June 2006.

My journey to London started at 6am from Winchester, Pete’s from Cambridge and Adam from Nothampton. We met at the Excel at 9am and had a cup of coffee in the press room. Our host at the Excel was A&R Marketing’s David Phillips.

After a quick walk around of the exhibi-tion we decided that I would set up the

crane in the live concert hall, Adam went walkabout with his Panasonic cam, film-ing musicians and bands performing in various parts of the venue.

Pete hooked up with Adam to interview Jan Akkerman, Gareth Pearson and Albert Lee.

First up on the live stage were various drummers including IRON MAIDEN drummer Nick McBrain.

Jan Akkerman took to the stage and per-formed a blinding acoustic set. He then introduced a young Welshman, Gareth Pearson who proceeded to blow us all away with his acoustic set.

Just when we thought our jaws couldn’t drop any further, Jan joined Gareth on stage for the most incredible acoustic finale I have ever seen.

The duo performed Jan’s classic track Hocus Pocus. If I had come away having only filmed that performance, I would have been a happy man.

Outstanding to say the least.

Albert Lee and his band, Hogans Heros

played a great set, Albert’s playing has to be seen to be believed. His is a true country rock guitarist legend and his band of polished musicians enhance what he does to the max.

Finally, Phil Hilborne appeared with an extreme lineup including Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain.

Phil Hilborne has a list of accomplish-ments in the industry us mere mortals could only achieve in a few lifetimes.

For the crew, it was the performance we had been waiting for and we were not disappointed.

Filming it live with a single HD cam perched precariously at the top of an eight foot crane was tough enough, but adding to the stress level was the fact that I knew I only had one chance to do this.

Filming the world’s greatest guitarists usually means this is a one off gig and the chances of doing it again could be few and far between.

Phil was the perfect host for the ex-clusive lineup of guest guitarists that followed his opening set. First up, gui-tarist Jamie Humphries followed by the ultimate guitarist’s guitarist, Steve Vai.

Phil was the perfect rock n roll gentle-man (if there can be such a thing) inter-acting with the maestro at every level, yet giving Steve the space to do what he does best...make that white Ibanez Jem sing, shred, wail, growl while his fingers dance on the fretboard like a prima ballerina.

The band was superb, hearing Steve play with Brit musos was really cool. The band had an edge which comes from a deep embedded tradition of classic Brit rock...an album with the same lineup?

Not likely but something to think about...considering it’s never been done before.)

Joe SatrianiAfter recording my first CD in Wolverhampton entitled DREAM in 2001, the next logical step was to have a web-site to sell it on. Know-

ing absolutely nothing about web design or how the internet actually worked was a problem that had to be overcome.

Finding an isp that had a magical web app that could do it all for me was a real bless-ing, and so www.mikedejager.co.uk be-came the testing ground for most of what I do today.

The website helped me sell a few units of the DREAM CD but it was my work with Guitarist magazine contributor Adrian Clark that really inspired me write more songs which were really only meant as my contribution the Guitarist Collective.

Where there’s a song...there should be a video! That became the driving force be-hind what eventually became the website www.MpegUK.com.

The video camera I owned was a Panasonic G5 in 2001 and I began to experiment with video on the internet using Real & Windows Media is almost every conceiv-able format.

Flash has been around since 1996 but it wasn’t until I had done the course at Halle-sowen College, Stourbridge in 2003, that I began to understand see the possibilities of publishing secure streaming video on the internet.

Brightcove came along in 2004 and I signed up for the free Beta version which hosted my rather clumsy video produc-tions. Brightcove grew from strength to strength and by 2005 the embedded video players on the my websites were fantastic.

Somehow I managed to talk my lovely wife Karen into letting me spend £1900.00 on a brand new Canon XLS1 camcorder in 2005 and that was the

real turning point in the quality of my video work.

I spent a lot of my time on weekends film-ing rugby games at Stourbridge Rugby Club in the freezing cold. The experience gained however, was to stand me in good stead in the year that followed.

My first ‘piece de camera’ was directed by Karen and that was when I realised that hey, I am enjoying doing this and really have a good time doing it.

Messing around on the internet one evening, check for silly url names, I tried www.Gui-taristTV.com and to my astonishment, no-body owned it...and so Guitarist TV was born.

Mick Brigden, Joe Satriani’s visionary direc-tor gave me the green light for the interview at the Birmingham Symphony Hall in June 2006 and that was when the panic set it. For-tunately a friend of mine, Philippa Hughes had just finished her media studies degree at Uni and she agreed to help with the direc-

tion, lighting and the 2nd cam and my dear friend Pete Caldwell got roped into doing the interview...being an Oxford man and a mean guitarist himself, he was perfect for the job.

On the day, I was there at 11am, carry-ing my gear into the main hall where I was politely told that a room on the 4th floor had been allocated for the interview and so, I humped the gear up far to many flights of stairs and began the process of setting up the room for the shoot.

Pete and Phillipa arrived in the afternoon and at 5pm Joe entered the room.

My heart was racing as I silently prayed nothing would go wrong. Pete was su-perb, he was relaxed and looked like he had been doing this for years. He had a great repore with Joe and certainly on an intellectual level, they were both very much on a par.

During the interview Pete mentioned to Joe that he was the first ever guitarist to be interviewed on Guitarist TV and Joe graciously wished us well on our maiden voyage.

Officially, Guitarist TV was on it’s way and from that moment I knew that no matter what, Guitarist TV will be with future generations forever.

Joe invited us to film three songs during the show which was indeed an honour and an unbelievable privilege.

We thank Joe and Mick for an unforget-table experience and for their blessing which has helped make Guitarist TV the world’s first guitarist TV channel.

Guitarist TV Rocks Up Its Broadcast Reach With Global IPTV Platform

DATE (Brighton, UK): The world’s

first premier broad-band, multi-genre guitarist channel, Guitarist TV (G-TV), rocks up its broadcast reach by signing with leading inter-national IPTV specialist, Global Digital Broadcast (GDBTV). Guitarist TV was founded by professional South African guitarist Mike de Jager, who is spon-sored by Marshall Amps (UK) and Moser Custom Guitars (USA) and has played with numerous artists including, Dennis Stratton (Iron Maiden 1979/1980); Simon Lees (Budgie); Brian Tatler (Diamond Head); Simon Bradley (Guitarist Mag.); Tim Manford (Dante Fox); and Paul May (Temple Dogs / V-Rats). The channel was originally launched online in 2006 by guitar legend Joe Satriani.

Launch on the GDBTV IPTV platform, across several countries between North

America, the UK and the MiddleEast, comes after GDBTV co-founder and COO David Wray took a personal interest in Guitarist TV.

Mike explains: “David first discovered Guitarist TV on the internet while he was on business in Los Angeles and arranged for us to meet up back at his offices in Brighton, UK. There was an immediate connection when we met and it felt as

though we had known each other for years. David and I share the same vision and, as fellow guitarists, we share the same passion. Together we are creating the world’s most amazing Guitarist TV channel ... for the good of mankind!”

He continues: “IPTV is perfect for niche markets to expand to a greater demo-graphic and allows easy access to the content. Guitarist TV is built by guitarists for guitarists around the world and the GDBTV platform will enable us to reach them all.”

In addition to expand-ing its broadcast reach, Guitarist TV is also boost-

ing the channel offerings to include: broadcast of live concerts; guitar workshops, seminars, educational programmes and fun guitar weekends for beginners to advanced; promotion and PR for both major record companies and unsigned artists; G-TV radio; a G-TV magazine; hot-off-the-press news and reviews; celebrity guests; and even guitar orientated travel programmes.

Artists who have featured on the channel thus far include: Joe Satriani; Greg Howe (Michael Jackson / Justin Timeberlake); Johnny A.; Eddie Van Halen; Luke Morley and Ben Matthews (Thunder); Steve Lukather (Toto); Joe Stump (Berklee); the late Eric Roche; Neville Martin (Guitarist Mag.); Ainsley Lister; Innes Sibun and Pete Caldwell (Basement Jaxx).

The Power behind Guitarist TV

David Wray coments: “There is a huge global guitarist community in every genre imaginable. As a former guitar teacher I know how much guitarists want visual resources. This channel enables educational and, of course, information indulgence, which is straight to the heart of the players worldwide and, best of all, it’s on their TV sets.”

Guitarists who contribute content to the channel also benefit from two dedicated G-TV award events – the annual G-TV Golden Glass Awards and the Guitar-ist TV Hall of Fame. The G-TV Golden Glass Awards launched in 2007 and the award is presented to the guitarist who has made both the greatest contribu-tion to Guitarist TV and the guitar world in general. The award itself is a one off, signed, glass art piece, made by fine glass artist Vic Bamforth. The 2009 G-TV Golden Glass Awards will be expanded to include a public vote. The Guitarist TV Hall of Fame was launched in 2008 in order to respect and remember the world’s greatest guitarists and G-TV supporter Joe Satriani was commended both launch awards.

Mike comments: “Joe has graciously met with us every year and his contribution and association with us is something we treasure. He is, without doubt, the most famous instrumental guitarist of the 21st century and that is why he took these awards..”

Joe Satriani adds: “I met Mike in 2006 in Birmingham and the connection was a good one; he does great work and I am proud to be associated with him and his work on Guitarist TV. I wish Mike every success with the channel and congratu-lations for finally making it onto the GDBTV network!”

Established in 2005 and headquartered in Brighton, East Sussex, Global Digital Broadcast (GDBTV) provides technical services in order to enable internet protocol television (IPTV) to be delivered by broadcasters around the world, to viewers around the world. Gary Moore has long been my favourite Brit guitarist, I learnt most his songs in the late 80’s during my days doing the pub circuit in Durban, South Africa.

Gary’s best ever guitar solo, in my humble opinion, was the one he did on the track Out in the Fields...Stuart Bull showed me how he did it on the latest Learn to Play Gary Moore Solos DVD!

Wicked mate, many thanks!
