LETTERS

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

WORD FROM CAPE RUGBY TV

I’d like to dedicate this week’s column to the most important people in sport; the fans.

It warmed my heart to see all our rugby supporters out in droves, despite the cold and wet weather that was present around the region last weekend.

Many of you would have watched the show on Wednesday night and would have seen the coverage of the match between

St George’s and Sir Lowrians.

@jpnaude

It was fantastic to hear about 3000 fans that surrounded the Gustrouw Sport Ground fields to attend the Super League B derby between St George’s and Sir Lowrians. This added something special to this rivalry between the two Helderberg clubs, creating an entertaining spectacle.

I’m so proud to see the passion for club rugby in our communities.

It was also amazing to see over 15 000 supporters braving the conditions to back the DHL Stormers. This seemed to inspire the team as our boys treated the DHL Newlands Faithful to a convincing 33-0 victory over a challenging Cheetahs outfit.

Remember, without all your support, rugby would not be the sporting phenomenon which we all love. Rugby might be played by the players, but the fans are the heartbeat of this game.

Thank you.

Thelo WakefieldWPRFU PRESIDENT

If you missed it, the venue saw over three thousand fans standing in the rain, watching their favourite club play. Once again , this is testimony to the sheer volume of community rugby fans in the Western Province region. These fans could have been anywhere, and it is at a time like this that one understands the concept of sport changing lives.

Nelson Mandela once said: “Sport has the power to change the world”.

The question you should surely ask yourself is whether you are contributing to the process. If the concept of meaningful contribution is foreign to you, then allow me to lend a hand – it is easy to get involved in sport. Any club would love to have a helping hand, it lightens the load for the administrators who arrange your weekly dose of entertainment, and you will know, in your soul, that your contribution made a difference.

Have a fantastic rugby weekend.

Game: St George’s 6 Sir Lowrians 14Division: Super League BVenue: Gustrouw

MATCH DETAILS

I always expected this to be a tough game. It was a typical derby. We’ve done well when you consider we lost this fixture 36–0 last year. A year of hard work and strategising has gone in to this performance. The guys

are playing for the love of the game.

“”

WILBUR KRAAKST GEORGE’S COACH

In what was a tight contest in the howling Gustrouw wind, Sir Lowrians came out on top 14-6 in this Super League B derby.

St George’s, who were revved up going into the clash, were unable to get their traditional running game going on the day and it was the Navy Train’s experience that ultimately earned them the victory.

Sir Lowrians picked up an important 14-6 win against their rivals St George’s.

It was a result that ended St George’s five-match unbeaten streak, while it allowed Sir Lowrians to edge ahead on the log.

Sir Lowrians prop and captain Edward Makhudayi delivered a monster performance to lead his troops from the front, and his pack of forwards offered outstanding support. This set the platform for the visitors to gain the ascendancy.

It was a great day out for the thousands in attendance, who were treated to a hard- fought contest between two title-chasing rivals.

The fans got their money’s worth today. Congratulations to both teams. Rugby in the Helderberg

region is so healthy and there is no bigger region when it comes to the

passion for rugby.

“”

There was a lot of guts and determination shown out there.

The conditions didn’t suit us but we are proud of our performance.

Match: Belhar v PrimroseDivision: Super League AVenue: Accordion Park, BelharBelhar have made a solid start to the season and are sniffing around the play-off places in Super League A. Primrose, one of the league’s newcomers, have shown signs of attacking brilliance, but have struggled for consistency. This match should be an enthralling encounter as Primrose will look to convince their doubters that they belong in the top flight, while Belhar will aim to maintain their reputation as having one the toughest defences.

Match: Milnerton v St George’sDivision: Super League BVenue: Theo Marais Park, MilnertonMilnerton have had an inconsistent start to the season, but remain one of the favourites to get a play-off spot. They are the league deadliest attack as they lead the division for points scored. St George’s have made a blistering start, winning their opening five games. They are making their mark at the top of the standings and have played some fantastic rugby so far. Can the Lulus keep that momentum going against a Milnerton side, coached by the experienced Ishma-eel Dollie and Adi Jacobs?

Match: Violets v SilverleafDivision: Super League CVenue: Chukker Road, WettonChukker Road has been a fortress for Violets this season. They host a Silverleaf team struggling for any form in this year’s campaign. Violets need a victory to keep pace with Langa at the top of the division. Expect a home victory here.

Match: Young Stars v Busy BeesDivision: City League Venue: Green Point TrackThis may prove to be one of the games of the weekend as the two top sides in the City League go head-to-head at the Track. There has been little to choose between the two sides this season and this may be the game that has a big say in where the title lands up.

Young Stars have been full of attacking intent and are the league highest scorers. Expect fireworks.

Match: Masiphumelele v Young BrothersDivision: Southern LeagueVenue: NoordhoekMasiphumelele have been a runaway train this season and have blown their competition out of the water with their hard-running and well-organised brand of rugby. They host a Young Brothers side in need of a win to keep their hopes of a play-off place alive. Masi have been particularly ruthless at home and will look to continue that trend.

Match: Strand Pioneers v Blue JetsDivision: Northern LeagueVenue: AbattoirStrand Pioneers’ season has been something of a horror show. They lost their first five games and sit bottom of the table. Their preparations have not been helped by a large player exodus, but they remain a club with a proud history and passionate support. If they are to turn their season around, they are going to have to start against the league leaders, Blue Jets. This will be no easy task as the visitors are the league’s top scorers.

Match: Violets v Lower PaarlDivision: Paarl LeagueVenue: DaljosafatWith Lower Paarl and Vineyards seemingly locked in a two horse race, Violets would love nothing more than to remind those two that they cannot be counted out. A perfect opportunity for them to do so will be this weekend when they host a rampant Lower Paarl side.

Match: Constantia v ExcelsiorDivision: Simonsberg RegionVenue: Cape Science SchoolThe Simonsberg Region has been an incredibly open one this season with as many as five teams in the running for the league title. Two of those teams go head-to-head in a must-win encounter. Constantia have made an impressive start to the season and are one of the league’s highest point scorers. Excelsior sit above them in the table and will look to maintain their title challenge.

Jose Julies hopes to catch the attention of provincial selectors with his strong performances for UWC.

The powerful lock has been a standout performer for Udubs as an effective ball-carrier and hard defender. He’s also the club’s lineout kingpin.

Although he’s struggled with injuries in recent months, he’s confident he’ll be running at full force during the Super League A campaign.

“I’ve had trouble with foot and shoulder injuries, but I’m fit again,” Julies tells Cape Rugby TV. “I’ve settled quite well at UWC, and I’m enjoying my studies and rugby.”

Julies comes with great junior provincial pedigree, having represented SWD and the Blue Bulls at age-group levels. He spent four years at the latter union in Pretoria before returning home and residing in Bellville.

After a stint with Primrose in 2002, he played his way into the DHL Western Province U21 set-up. Thereafter, he joined UWC, receiving the opportunity to feature in the Varsity Shield. The 23-year-old now has his sights on securing a senior provincial contract.

“I was injured during this year’s Vodacom Cup, so I didn’t get the chance to play,” says Julies. “But I’m confident I can earn my provincial chance soon.”

JOSE JULIESUWC

Hamiltons No 10 Shane Vallender has emerged as one of the top young flyhalves on the Western Province club scene.

His impressive all-round game has given the Hammies backline a notable edge, especially on attack. The 24-year-old also shows good accuracy with his kicks out of hand and at goal.

Having come through the club development system, he earned his first provincial call-up in 2013, making the Western Province Amateur squad.

“I’ve learned a lot over the past years, having played for the Western Province Amateurs and in competitions like Super League A and the Community Cup,” Vallender tells Cape Rugby TV. “I’ve become a better player having had a chance to play in high-pressure games.

“The most important lesson I’ve learned is not to give up. I’ve realised that you will make mistakes, but you have to get back on to the horse. All players become better with experience.”

Vallender hopes to play himself into the DHL Western Province ranks in the near future.

“Playing at provincial was a huge eye-opener,” he says. “The structures and professionalism taught me a lot. I’d love to get my chance in the Vodacom Cup.”

Ikeys loose forward Sihle Mtwa has struggled for an extended opportunity to prove his worth because of the difficulties of balancing his studies and rugby career. However, this will soon come to an end.

The 25-year-old is finishing off his final year in Entrepreneurship at UCT, and he plans to give rugby a full go.

“Players who enrol at academies are extremely fortunate,” Mtwa tells Cape Rugby TV. “Their daily schedules are planned around their rugby careers. Although my match stats are up there with the best, I haven’t been able to make the most of all my opportunities.”

Mtwa is an imposing loosie, who makes a notable impact on defence and attack. He boasts provincial experience, having represented Border at U13, U16 and U18 levels before stints at Tuks and Valke U21s. He also represented the Border Bulldogs in the Vodacom Cup and Fort Hare in the Varsity Shield.

He then joined UCT before receiving a Western Province Amateur call-up.

“I’ll be giving my all to UCT rugby,” he says. “Looking at a guy like Stormers scrumhalf Dylon Frylinck inspires me. He once received limited opportunities at UCT, but he worked hard and now plays with the professionals. I want to do the same.”

Scrumhalf Louis Nel wants to build on the successful start he’s enjoyed with Maties this year.

Nel made his Varsity Cup debut for Stellenbosch University earlier this year, and has helped the club to a seven-match unbeaten start to their Super League A campaign.

He’s been a key organiser on attack and defence, bringing calm to the team. He’s also a good decision-maker when it comes to the tactical aspects.

“I’m happy with my performances and the way the team has bounced back after a disappointing Varsity Cup campaign,” Nel tells Cape Rugby TV. “We aim to continue our winning streak in the league.”

Nel is a product of Paarl Boys’ and boasts provincial experience, having played for the Golden Lions U19s and the Western Province Amateurs. The 22-year-old credits Maties head coach Chris Rossouw for his recent development.

“Chris has played flyhalf at higher levels, and has passed on his experience to the flyhalves and scrumhalves in the squad. That’s valuable coaching,” says Nel.

Currently studying accounting, Nel’s goal is to play his way into the provincial ranks.

CLUB FOCUS

YOUNG STARS SKY HIGHYoung Stars are thriving in the City League and have their eye on the promotion.

Young Stars are steeped in tradition and have carried their proud legacy of winning rugby into this year’s City League campaign. They sit

proudly at the top of the standings after winning six of their opening seven matches so far.

The key to their success is their home form. The Green Point Track has become a fortress as they have yet to lose there this season. Their most cherished result was no doubt the recent victory over old rivals Caledonian Roses.

Their kit (which is navy blue and white stripes) is a throwback to the UCT v Maties Rag matches and is a sign of their glowing history. Some of the players that have gone on to higher honours are Hardie Dollie and Shaheed Isaacs.

Club administrator Jameel Alexander has been with the club since 1981 and is very optimistic about the season ahead.

“The new format is very fair and clubs can use this to fast-track themselves into the Super Leagues,” Alexander tells Cape Rugby TV. “Playing each team once means that you must make use of home-ground advantage. Luckily for us, The Track has been a good hunting ground for us.”

The club’s main goal is to reach the promotional play-offs, and they’re well on their way after their current stellar form. Credit must be given to head coach Rodger Smith, who took over the reins at the end of last year and is experiencing his first full season at the helm.

Smith played wing for the Sharks and his influence has been telling, with Young Stars emerging the top points-scorers this season.

“His influence has been great, especially in terms of our backline play and organisation” says Alexander. “We play an open brand of rugby and we focus on creating space and try-scoring opportunities.”

Top performers this season have been captain and centre Anthony Taylor and flank Iron Smith.

Taylor has made the DHL Western Province sevens side in the past and has been a huge contributor on the field. Flanker Smith has been in outstanding form and has collected the most Man of the Match acclaims.

Boasting rich history and playing some of the most exciting rugby in the Cape, it shouldn’t be long before Young Stars find themselves competing in the Super Leagues.

W hen two Young Gardens teams merged in 1992, it started an upward trend that is still on the incline today.

In previous years, Young Gardens played in both the SARU Garden and Gardens Federation leagues until their unification, which helped the club soar as high as the Premier A division in 1999.

As is the case with many of the smaller clubs, they lost their best players to bigger clubs and struggled financially for a while. However, they have since rebuilt the club with notable young and exciting talent from the Paarl East areas.

“We have a developing team. Some of our players have just finished school, but are raring to go. We are excited for the future,” Young Gardens chairman Mario Williams tells Cape Rugby TV.

The club boasts a rich history and produced players such as celebrated flank Randy Marinus and scrumhalf Peter de Villiers, the latter going on to coach the Springboks and is now involved with UWC.

“Our goal at the start of the season was to win the league outright,” admits Williams. “Unfortunately, with our

YOUNG GARDENS DIG DEEPYoung Gardens are considered the dark horse in the Paarl League.

inconsistent start and the form of Lower Paarl and Vineyards, we have set our sights on getting into the top six and competing for knockout title.”

The club boasts an experienced and battle-hardened forward pack and exciting backline players. Centre Keegan September and fullback Tevan Haredien are two of the standout talents this season.

The club boasts a local in the provincial ranks. Wing Chevandre van Schoor made his senior debut during this year’s Vodacom Cup, having previously represented the union on the junior and sevens scenes. Van Schoor is currently based at Bellville South, having joined the club in 2014.

Despite the trend of losing quality players to bigger clubs, Williams remains optimistic about the season ahead.

“There are a huge couple weeks ahead as we face the top three teams in the league. We beat Vineyards last year and will be channelling that underdog spirit to repeat the trick this time around,” says a confident Williams.

Dennis Cox has worked his way through the DHL Western Province junior structures from an early age. He’s represented the Cape Town-based union at U12, U13, U16 and U18

levels, going on to don the blue and white hoops twice at the U18 Craven Week in 2012 and 2013.

The Excelsior matriculant is now training with the DHL Western Province U19s, which he believes is another important juncture in his development. “It’s always been my goal to make the provincial squads. It’s always been an honour to play for DHL Western Province,” Cox tells Cape Rugby TV. “I’ve taken something out from every experience. Playing at that level has helped me improve my game.”

Cox is an attacking-minded flyhalf, who’s also capable of playing fullback. He thrives with his attacking role, looking for spaces and threatening defences to create try-scoring opportunities, especially for those in sup-port on his outside. The 19-year-old also has a good boot, which allows him to play tactically if needed.

Cox has agreed a one-year junior contract with DHL Western Province, and will also enrol at the SA Sevens Academy in Stellenbosch after school.

“And these players don’t forget where they’ve come from. A guy like Justin Geduld always comes back to mingle with our players whenever he has the time. The youngsters look up to him, and want to achieve the things he has achieved.”

Parring, who’s been involved at Tygerberg as a player and coach since its inception, credits quality coaching as the main reason for its development success.

“All our coaches are required to attend Level 1 and 2 training courses, and to be BokSmart accredited,” he explains. “We take youth coaching very seriously because this is when players are taught the proper fundamentals of rugby.”

Parring predicts a bright future for Tygerberg youth rugby.“All the players play for the pride of the club. That’s the type of culture we instil here,” he says. “We have a great buy-in from the players and coaches, and even the community. The local schools are always happy to play against us. We just hope more parents will come out to support their boys.”

When Tygerberg was unified in 1992, the club ensured it established youth structures to pave a way for junior players to graduate into the senior teams.

Tygerberg youth rugby is now recognised as one of the most effective junior systems in Western Province club rugby as the Ravensmead-based club has continuously developed youth players of high quality. Blitzbok, Junior Springbok and DHL Western Province speedster Justin Geduld is noted as its most successful representative.

“We’re very proud of what we have achieved over the years,” Tygerberg Head of Junior Coaching Winston Parring tells Cape Rugby TV. “We have contributed a number of players to the top schools in the region and DHL Western Province junior provincial teams, granting them the best opportunities.

I was very nervous before the game as I found myself among players who were older than me, but I managed to do well on the field. I also loved playing in front of family, friends and my community. At higher levels, you play in front of big crowds, and some of those people can be hard on you when you don’t do well or the team loses. But your community offers you unconditional support, which builds confidence. What are your thoughts on Western Province club rugby? It’s still an important development structure in this region, and hailing from Mitchell’s Plain, I’m proof of that. During my earlier years, I didn’t have to

attend a so-called “big school” to earn provincial colours. I played for the Western Province U11s to U15s coming through the club system. Playing club rugby also creates opportunities. A scout watched me play and offered a chance to further my schooling at Bishops.

How are you still involved with the community?I carry out coaching sessions at schools and clubs whenever I can. I’ve also opened a rugby academy at Islamia College. I get a great response from the young players, who see me as a role model. They want to emulate my success. It’s a good feeling knowing that I can be a positive influence on others, especially in communities where there is a lot of negative influences on the streets.

Daniel Fortuin began refereeing in 2005 after suffering an injury playing for local club Whistling Wheels.

Nearly a decade on and Fortuin is part of the SARU referees panel, a great achievement for this die-hard rugby fan.

“I look forward to refereeing every game. Club rugby is awesome,” explains Fortuin. “For me, refereeing a club game is the same as if I was to ref a top-flight rugby match. I love it and I want the players to do so as well.”

One of Fortuin’s standout features is that he ensures he has good communication with the players.

Daniel Fortuin is one of the more experienced referees on the club rugby circuit.

“It’s about creating a positive atmosphere, even before the game has even started,” he explains. “I would go up to both teams and just chat to them. Sometimes it will have nothing to do with rugby.

“Creating that open dialogue is vital if you hope to control the game, especially now that referees are trying to get out of the habit of dishing out yellow cards at will.”

It’s this positive attitude that has seen Daniel Fortuin become one of the most experienced and well-respected referees on the club rugby circuit.

Andrea Mentoor is no stranger to the Western Province club rugby circuit, yet it was in the United Kingdom where she first started playing rugby.

Like her father, she had a passion for the game and always wanted to take part in it.

After playing rugby in England for two years, Mentoor and her family moved back to South Africa, where she joined Maties. The following year she was selected for DHL Western Province. She now currently plays for Pniel Villagers, where she continues her growth as a player.

“I have benefited immensely from club rugby, because that is where I learned to play the sport. It also allowed me to discover more about the game and to improve and develop my skills,” Mentoor tells Cape Rugby TV.

“One of my ultimate club goals is for the Pniel Villagers to win the women’s league. From a personal perspective, I am working hard to play my way into contention for a place in the Women’s Rugby World Cup squad.”

As a physical player and a lineout specialist, Mentoor was selected for the Springbok Women’s training squad. She will no doubt be looking to make an impact for club and country in the coming months.

COACH’S CORNER

Tell us about your rugby background.I made the move down to Cape Town to study and went on to play for several clubs. I eventually made the Western Province Amateurs in 2004, which paved the way for my provincial career. I played for DHL Western Province in the Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup, before being drafted into DHL Stormers squad in 2007. In 2009, I played for Boland before retiring from professional rugby. I ended my playing days at Villager, where I took over from current Springbok scrum consultant Pieter de Villiers as head coach. In 2013, I was appointed as Primrose head coach.

What do you make of Primrose’s season so far?The Super League A campaign has been a major learning curve for the team. It’s been a chance for us to find our feet in the top flight. We should’ve won one or two other games, but the ball just didn’t bounce our way. We’ve done very well under our current circumstances. Credit must be given to our supporters. We have the best fans in the league as they always turn out in huge numbers, whether it’s at home or away. This support gives our players a massive boost.

What issues does your club face?Like most clubs, we struggle for depth in our 1st XV squad. However, this is something we are working through and we are still proving to be a competitive force.

What are your goals for the season?Primrose wants to remain as competitive as possible. We are not here to make up the numbers. We want to earn our respect among the top clubs in this region and prove that we are no pushovers in this league.

What do you make of the club’s youth structures? Some of our 1st XV players coach the junior teams, so there’s very good communication between junior and senior coaches. I take the time out and help out where I can. Our coaches thrive, knowing that there are good people around at Primrose. We also have plenty of young talent coming through, so the future looks bright.

What do you make of the new Western Province club rugby structure? It’s been a brilliant initiative. It gives more clubs the opportunity to take

BIG DREAMS Rito Hlungwani made his mark as a player. Now he wants to become an accomplished coach.

on the big dogs, like UCT and Maties. That’s a great experience for club players, who get a chance to measure themselves up against guys who are in the DHL Western Province ranks.

What are your personal short- and long-term goals?I want to achieve as a coach. I want to gain as much experience as I can and become better and better. I’m grateful for guys like Pieter de Villiers and Herman Masimla at SARU, who have provided guidance and have passed on some great advice. They have had a huge influence on my young coaching career. In the long-term future, I hope to receive the opportunity of coaching at higher levels. But my focus is on the now, and that’s building Primrose into a competitive Super League A club.
