END OF TERM 2 NEWS UPDATE
Principal’s News What an eventful and wonderful term we have had! Students and teachers have been very busy with lots of wonderful celebrations and events to enjoy. I am sure we are all looking forward to a restful holiday over the next 2 weeks, before the commencement of Term 3 on Tuesday 23 July.
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Last week we ran our first split K-2 and 3-6 Athletics Carnivals. Both carnivals were a great success, with students demonstrating their agility, strength and speed in a range of traditional athletics disciplines as well as a range of fun and active novelty events. The weather was perfect and we had lots of parents and visitors attend the carnivals, which was wonderful to see. I would like to thank both Miss Jones who coordi-nated and ran the 3-6 carnival and Miss Walsh who coordinated and ran the K-2 carnival for their outstand-ing organisation of the day. The students had a won-derful day and so did staff and parents.
SEMESTER 1 STUDENT REPORTS AND PARENT/ TEACHER INTERVIEWS Semester 1 reports will be handed out during parent/teacher interviews this week. All remaining reports will be sent home on Friday 5 July. I encourage parents and carers during interview time to ask questions if not sure about a particular aspect of their child’s learning or progress.
LATE ARRIVALS Every morning at Guildford Public School we have many, many students who arrive well after 9am. It is very important for all students to arrive at school on time every day. Every class commences their Reading and Writing learning activi-ties promptly at 9am just after rolls are marked. Students who are late miss out on this important learning. If a child is just 10 -15 minutes late for school every day this will result in one hour of lost learning time every week totalling 10 hours a term. Many students regularly arrive at 9:30/10am and even later. These students are disadvantaged because they miss out on crucial learning time. This also applies when students are collected early and they miss out on afternoon learning activities.
IMPROVEMENT OF SCHOOL GROUNDS This week we are installing a new PA/Intercom System across the school. This will now allow emergency contact between classroom and office, whole school messages, bells that can be heard everywhere in the school and line up music. What this means for parents is that from Term 3, if you need to sign your child out early this will be done through the office and they will call the classroom to have the student sent up to the office.
Kind Regards Ms Monique Levis

On Thursday the 6
th of June, our team of Year 4 and Year 5
students participated in an Academic Challenge at Fairfield High
School. My teammates included Darius, Derrick, Zahraa, Kelly and
Fiona. We travelled there in two cars with Mrs Byrnes and
Mrs Luongo.
On the way to the academic challenge, we were all buzzing with
excitement! Everyone was ready to cook and use their genius
brains in the math challenge. We finally arrived and walked to
Fairfield High School’s library where we met the head teacher in
maths. He was one of our judges. He explained that the maths
challenge was part of the cooking challenge and that we needed
to work out the math problems to make the pizza rolls. We also
met the head teacher of the cooking section of the TAS
department. He was our second judge. We were shown what to do and we finally got started. Our team
was organised into pairs and I was partnered up with Derek. We made a really good team just like
everyone else in our group.
We quickly worked out the math problems and then started making our pizza rolls. It was very messy
because we were using flour to knead the dough but it was extremely fun. Soon it was time for lunch, so
the head teacher of the food technology department examined at our pizza rolls and then placed them
in the oven. We ate our lunch and finally started to clean up our stations. Once we cleaned up we got to
try our pizza rolls. The pizza rolls were delicious!
Darius, Derek, Zarhaa, Kelly, Fiona and I started to walk back to the library so we could find out who had
won the Academic Challenge. The room was full of suspense and everyone was so excited to hear the
results. The head teacher of the maths finally spoke and said that Guildford came equal 1st place with
Smithfield in the cooking challenge. We were extremely happy but then it was time to find out who the
overall winning team was. The room was once again quiet with suspense and excitement. Every school
was hoping that their school name would be announced but the winner was Smithfield Public School.
We were not disappointed at all because we came equal first in the cooking section and we were very
proud of that. The day was coming to an end so we went back to school, all excited to show our parents
the delicious pizza rolls we made!
