Guideline on giving a teaching demonstration Duty to give a teaching demonstration Giving the teaching demonstration Defining the topic and level of the teaching demonstration Assessment of the teaching demonstration and teaching skills

1. Duty to give a teaching demonstration

The decision on the teaching demonstration is made by the group that prepares filling the post. In the case of the title of docent, the Faculty Council makes the decision. A teaching demonstration is a public event, but the presence of the other applicants is not allowed. If an applicant refuses to give the demonstration or does not come to give the demonstration at the designated time, it is not possible to assess his/her teaching skills. Decisions on the teaching demonstration are separately made for each post or title of docent.

2. Giving the teaching demonstration The teaching demonstration is a lecture unless otherwise decreed. The duration of the teaching demonstration is twenty minutes after which five minutes are reserved for questions and comments from the audience. The language of the teaching demonstration is Finnish or English unless otherwise decreed. Arrangements for the time of the teaching demonstration and practical matters are made with the Faculty administration.

3. Defining the topic and level of the teaching demonstration The teaching demonstration is given in the field of the post or title of docent. The topic of the teaching demonstration is either free or given. The level of the teaching demonstration is defined as follows: - professor, associate professor and title of docent – advanced level studies in the

4. Assessment of the teaching demonstration and teaching skills The teaching demonstration and teaching skills are assessed by the Faculty’s Teaching Skills Committee. The teaching demonstration may be approved or rejected. An approved teaching demonstration is graded as either commendable, good or satisfactory. One chance to give another teaching demonstration is offered to applicants whose first demonstration is rejected. In the assessment of teaching skills, other material submitted with the application, such as the teaching portfolio, are taken into account in addition to the demonstration. Teaching skills are assessed with the same grading scale as the teaching demonstration. The assessment of the teaching demonstration focuses on the command of scientific content in the field in question, the subject of the teaching demonstration, the applicant’s ability to adhere to the ethical principles of teaching and research as well as pedagogical skills and performance. In addition, the assessment of the teaching demonstration makes note of the composition and presentation of the demonstration; the applicant’s ability to deliver the following: - outlining the subject matter being taught in a manner understood by the intended

audience - outlining the learning situation - justifying the ideas and arguments presented - making use of the latest research in the field - giving the teaching demonstration in an inspirational and thought-provoking

manner - interacting with the students - illustrating the teaching

The applicant will be informed in writing about the assessment of his/her teaching demonstration and teaching skills.
