Today, we are living in a world defined by networks where ever-changing technological advancements completely and continuously alter the way we live both our personal and professional lives. Further-more, every time that we connect with another, we draw a line to a deeper part of ourselves due to the fact that nowadays, we have the capability to single-handedly create a unique appearance and identity before revealing that crafted persona to the public and society. In other words, the rules of this networked-age have resulted in crowds of new brands, each created by the individual to represent their own unique self.

This year is a special year for the Bangkok Design Festival, as the event was originally scheduled for the beginning of the year, but was unfortunately postponed due to complications caused by last year’s political conflicts. Therefore, we found it fit-ting to present this year’s Bangkok Design Festival as a special edition under the theme of “Connect.”

From Within,” and is being held at the Ratcha- damnoen Contemporary Art Center. Many of you may have not yet visited this recently renovated art center, and the aforementioned event is a great opportunity to take in not only the works of Jong- saeng and company, but also the new and improved design of the space. A second major event that will be held this September is the results of a collaboration between the Siam Center and the Bangkok Fashion Society (BFS) and has been given the name: ‘Visionaries : 40 Years of Thai Fashion Through The Eyes of Photographers.’ The exhibition will feature the evolution of contemporary fashion in Thailand, from past to present, in photographic format. At the same time, the Bangkok Art and Cultural Center will be exhibiting the works of Anon Pairoj and Angkrit Ajchariyasophon under the name AA (Anon & Angkrit) on the 5th floor of the BACC while Ardel and Atta Galleries will showcase the works of both Thai and international designers throughout the duration of the festival.

Without doubt, the highlight of the festival this year is the ‘Thailand Innovation and Design Expo’ or ‘T.I.D.E’ that is being held from 18 - 21 September 2014 at the Queen Sirikit Convention Center. The expo will include many entertaining activities which are described in more detail inside this program booklet. Finally, we hope that you not only enjoy this special edition of the Bangkok Design Festival, but that you might also find yourself drawing connections - between the people, infor-mation and valuable sources of inspiration - developing these experiences into something beneficial for not only yourselves but our society of the future as well.

Thailand is one of the world’s most important production bases of agricultural produce, fashion and design, as well as automobile and electronics which require advanced technology and innovation. Its location is also another advantage, being connected to many ASEAN nations.

Calling upon a value added model within the creative economy has come to be a key concept for invigorating Thailand’s economy in the following decade. For this reason, Thailand Innovation and Design Expo 2014 (T.I.D.E 2014) is taking place, as the Depart-ment of International Trade Promotion envisions the country rising to be ASEAN’s centre of innova-tion and design. Held between 18-21 September 2014 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, the event showcases innovative, environmentally friendly products and designs, and a number of interesting activities aim at providing a platform for discussion among Thai designers and entrepreneurs which will spark off novel ideas for future innova-tion. The exhibition is also aimed at encouraging the public to apply the value added model to their own products.

‘DEmark’ - The establishment of Thailand as one of the leading nations in design requires one inevitable thing-it is ‘Award’. The award should be recognised by both domestic and international communities and must be an important award for those who are in the design community, such as the ‘Design Excellence Award’ or DEmark award, which is considered to be a great guarantee of products of quality production, usage and excellent ideas of design. Thailand Institute of Design and Innovation Promotion, Department of International Trade Promotion firstly initiated the ‘DEmark’ award project in 2008 as a great op-portunity for Thai entrepreneurs and designers to show their products and designs to the world. The project is well supported by two renowned organi-zations from Japan, the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP). Consequently, the project led to the greater award ‘Good Design’ or ‘G-Mark’.

The Department of International Trade Promotion in collaboration with the Bangkok Design Festival has arranged the workshop, “Bag to The Future : A Workshop with Crumpler” as a means of providing the public with invaluable insights into the develop- ment and branding of lifestyle products (bags and other accessories) and design aspects and tools which can be called upon to create and develop a truly unique product and brand amongst the field of competitors. Patrick FongFounder, Patrick Fong Design Ltd.(Hong Kong and Hangzhou)

Mr. Fong holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Columbus College of Art and Design, 1975 with a focus on Interior Design. Fong is a registered pro-fessional interior designer for both IIDA (U.S.A) and CSD (U.K.) and was elected to serve as the Chairman of the Hong Kong Design Association from 1993-1995. In 1999, Mr. Fong received the “Design Export Award” organized by The Hong Kong Trade Development Council and, in the year 2000, was named one of “The 2000 Most Influential Interior Architects of the 20th Century.”

Mr. Fong is a renowned designer with over 25 years of experience who has completed a diverse range of projects and works including shopping arcades, corporate headquarters, hotels and serviced apart- ments located in equally diverse locations including mainland China, Hong Kong, South East Asia and the USA. Major completed projects include the Pacific Place, Time Square, the Hang Seng Bank Headquarters Building, the China World Trade Center in Beijing, Penang Holiday Inn and the Labour Bureau in Ohio, USA.

Jarrod Lim comes from a culturally diverse back-ground, with his father being from Singapore and his mother Australia, while Jarrod himself was born in Singapore but spent most of his life in Melbourne, Australia. While in Australia, Jarrod studied industrial design and worked for Patricia Urquiola, currently one of the world’s most in demand designers, as well as SCP, a leading furniture manufacturer and retailer in the United Kingdom.

Currently, Jarrod has launched his own studio in Singapore with a gallery space at the front that acts as a reception area for visitors. All of Jarrod’s designs are especially attentive to human behaviors in daily life, a focus which comes through in his simple and minimalistic approach. His studio offers a wide range of designs ranging from furniture pieces, products, interior and exhibition designs as well as brand development for international companies.

This project aims to create and promote a small creative community of inventive minds as well as exchange their ideas in regards to ‘crafting’ as a concept for integrating techniques and ideas on-site in order to work creatively. This event has gathered many talented studios together resulting in the creation of a hybrid pop-up space which can be used for both retail and art exhibitions where various activities and workshops will take place throughout the 4 days of the event. The Make Collective project consists of many talented studios including: This.means.that Studio, Archivist Studio, Lohameka Studio of Jewelry Art, Tithi Kutchamuch, Nucharin Wangphongsawasd and MUMANA Studio. All of these studios may have different design approaches, skills and production techniques, but they also have one thing in common which is that they have what it takes to be a designer-maker who can create wonderful products by the means of their own two crafty hands.

The TentsIn the fashion world, “The Tents” are synonymous with the giantwhite tents erected every spring and fall during NY Fashion Week. It is here where hundreds of designers showcase their latest collections to fashion editors, buyers and celebrities and where legendary designers have made their first big break. Director James Belzer & Cinematographer Marcus K. Jones catalogue the birth of New York Fashion Week, its expansion and finally its move out of Bryant Park, fashion week’s home since 1993, to Lincoln Center. In the film features exclusive behind the scenes footage and intimate interviews with top fashion players such as Betsey Johnson, Carolina Herrera, Donna Karan, Glenda Bailey, Hal Rubenstein, Tommy Hilfiger and Zac Posen.

Degree Shows 2014 is the selection of the best theses and final projects by undergraduate design students in 7 fields of design - architecture, interior, product, graphic, motion graphic & animation, fashion and jewelry design. As in past years, many excellent design works from students of universities throughout the country were submitted in the hopes of being selected as the best thesis project of the year 2014.Anyone interested is welcome to join the presentation of work by the Degree Shows 2014 contestants and listen to the judges critiques and decisions regarding who should move forward in the competition. The presentation will be held at the Queen Sirikit Convention Center, showcasing the works of 20 candidates from each design field.On 19 September 2014, join us at the presentation of contestants from architecture, interior, graphic and fashion design contestants and on 21 September 2014, attend the work presentation of product, motion graphic/ animation and jewelry design fields. The judges will select the 5 best works from each field and the best work from each field will be granted a chance to take home the pre- stigious ‘Best of the Show’ award, the top honor that will be announced by the judges on the final presentation day.

Let’s see which thesis projects from all 7 design fields will take home the‘Best of Categories’ prizes comprising 7 scholarships in total, each of which brings winnings of 20,000 baht, as well as which of these top projects will receive the ‘Best of the Shows’ award and a 50,000 baht scholarship along with a round-trip ticket from Bangkok to London to participate in a special design course at Domus Academy.

GeniusLoci

Genius Loci is an Art-Design collection that inter-weaves spiritual beliefs and furniture design into one. Thais and Asians have long lived their lives under the belief that the spirits of our predecessors are watching over the members and property of our families and we have our own culture of house building, including the construction of Spirit houses, where the abstract presence of these spirits reside. Genius Loci is the transformation of spiritual beliefs into a tangible form of abstractness. Old furniture with family stories and memories passed on from generation to generation are gradually grown into the house of spirits similar to the way that mush-rooms grow on a log. The design process begins from the selection of materials, mostly antique wooden furniture and objects, while the various pieces of furniture and ambiences they create inspire different designs of the house and its unique characteristics. Inside the cabinet is where memories are kept: photographs of grandparents, personal belongings, a pillow, a comb, a bowl, etc. Genius Loci is a work created with the hope of inspiring people in the modern world to look back and treasure the stories of their own predecessors and personal origins.

40 years of Thai Fashionthrough the eyes of

photographers

VisionariesSiam Center, the Bangkok Fashion Society (BFS) and Thailand’s leading fashion photographers have come together in collaboration to host an exhibition of Thai fashion photography by legendary photogra-phers spanning the past 4 decades. The works have been separated into categories chronologically: the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s and a total of over 400 photos from the top 20 photographers of Thailand, including Noppadol Chotasiri, Sakchai Guy, Wasan Pungprasert, Noppadol Kaosamang, Nut Prakorbsantisook, Lakkana Virunanon, Thada Varish and Pansiri Sirivechapan to name a few, will be on display.

Moreover, the event will also include a second photo- graphy exhibition in honor of “Mr. Toh” Vithaya Marayat, an elite photographer of the 80s who is considered to be the pioneer of modern fashion photography in his ability to exquisitely reflect the identity of Thai brands of the period. Mr. Toh is often heralded as the innovator who pushed contemporary fashion forward to become what it is today.

A fashion photography workshop by “NEXT” and Nut Prakobsantisuk, Thailand’s leading photo- grapher, will also be held during the event in which Prakobsantisuk, other experts and famous names from the industry will be instructing 20 new-generation photographers in the special techniques of modern fashion photography.

From Chaos to

The exhibition “From Chaos to Comprehension” features the works of 7 contemporary jewelry artists from Denmark, Germany, The UK, The People’s Republic of China and Thailand, all of whom graduated with an MA in Jewelry, Silversmithing and Related Products from Burmingham City University, UK between 2010 and 2013. Participating Artists include Nana Grønborg, Fliss Quick Hannah Fewtrell - Bolton, Natalie Smith, Xiao Liu, Farrah Al - Dujaili and Panjapol Kulpapangkorn.

The work shown is the outcome of an ongoing struggle in which chaotic situations encountered during the working process are followed by com-prehension that in turn fosters new questions to be raised. All of the artists share the belief that their studies were an important and valuable step in their practices that served as a base for their future work. The common thread that can be drawn between these artists is their seemingly ceaseless drive to seek out new and compelling solutions toward their individual concepts.

The concepts and works presented here are as different as their makers and reflect various perspectives on Jewelry in the context of contem-porary society veiled by personal experience.

I-Landmini exhibition Atta welcomes Jiro Kamata to the gallery with his very own “I-Land” Mini Exhibition!

Jiro Kamata is a Japanese contemporary jewelry artist who was trained under the watchful eye of Prof. Otto Künzli at the famous Academy of Fine Arts Munich and has now continued to live and work in Munich, Germany. For the “I-Land” Mini Exhibition, Jiro chose to exhibit three series of works, all of which are made with camera lenses: Momentopia (2008 - 2010) Arboresque (2010 - 2012) and Spiegel (2011 - 2013).

ผลงานชนแรกทเอเอภมใจเสนอใน การเขารวมเทศกาลออกแบบบางกอกภาคพเศษในครงนเปนเรองเกยวกบการสรางสรรคความสขใหแกทกๆ คนในผลงานชด “ฟรง ฟรง” ตามความคดมงมงของ Anon & Ankrit

AA is the abbreviated form of the combined names of world-renowned Thai designer, Anon Pairot of Anon Pairot Design Studio and a celebrated artist from Northern Thailand, Angkrit Ajchariyasophon. Anon and Angkrit collaborated for the first time back in 2013 working as artists and curators in the Singapore Biennale exhibition. Their conversations often circulate around the topics of art, aesthetics, design, culture and admiring the beauty of women. Both designer and artist share a strong belief that art is the key to making the world a better place, a way of thinking that brought the duo together and led to the birth of ‘AA.’

AA proudly presents their first exhibition centered around creating a sense of happiness within the audience under the concept, “Nice to meet you” during this Bangkok Design Festival special edition.

Ens ci Les Atelliers : Ecole National Superieure de Geation Industrielle, Paris FRANCE in partnership with the School of Architecture and Design, King Mongkut’s University of Technology,Thonburi presents an exhibition depicting the outcomes of a 2 - week - journey - based Worth Workshop, held in Chiangmai and Bangkok during 15-26 September 2014. Design students from both institutes travel together and share their experiences, thoughts and perceptions towards cultural differences in relation- ship to the meaning of Design.
