Why has wood been considered - in the history of construction and by different cultures, therefore universally - the best and most versatile material? We try to answer this question by highlithing 7 requirements of wood which are still fundamental.

The wonders of wood

Safety in CaSe of fireAlthough it is a combustible raw material, wood has an excellent fire behaviour ifit is used in certain sections. Thanks to its resistance and its level of humidity, wood is in facta poor conductor and a material with a predictable behaviour! Various European and Italian

regulations, in particular UNI 954 and the European standard called EUROCODE 5 - UNI ENV 1995-1-2 "Design of timber structures" indicate the procedures to assess analytically the reaction and the resistance to fire of wooden structural elements of the various wood species. The mechanism behind fire resistance is due to a carbonised thin external layer which is able to insulate thermally the most part of the section of the structural element and to safeguard its mechanical resistance. This behaviour is further improved with the use of adhesives and impregnating agents during the production process of laminated wood to guarantee the self-extinguishing and intumescence properties.

MeChaniCal reSiStanCe and StabilityIf we consider these properties in relation to the specific weight and the basic cost, wood wins hands down: it is a lightweight material with high -resistance values, thanks to its nature

and the experience acquired over time. Wood, in form of laminated wood, produced with highly technologic processes, has become in the last decades a structural component for complex engineering projects. This prefabricated material is made through unidirectional gluing of solid wood boards, thus creating highly resistent structural elements, which are stable in time and workable for the different final uses, -and are inert to the most aggressive climatic conditions. All these properties are accurately defined and certified.

This is also valid for wooden frames which, combined with appropriate double-glazing,

reach index values of excellent sound-insulating powerRw, superior to 40 dB.

PROTECTION AGAINST NOISEIt is necessary to highlight another characteristic of wood as a raw

material. Wood is in fact a cellular material with a very low water residue after seasoning.Wood is therefore both an excellent sound insulating material, which is able to absorbe both noise and vibrations (wood panelling is ideal for auditoriums, especially for music) and a a good heat insulator (hot surfaces). This inherent property of wood makes it ideal in construction, both as a structural element (solid or laminated wood) and as a support for layered composites in multilayer wood/cellular materials. In the latter case, wood is ideal for panelling and partitions (double or plywood walls) thus halving the necessary thickness for bricks/mortars and blocks/concrete.

SAFETY FOR SEISMIC AREASWood has better antiseismic properties than other construction materials, thanks to its characteristics of elasticity and lightness.Research institutes like CNR-IVALSA help value the behaviour of laminated wood by designing,

making and testing structural elements which are highly resistent to seismic vibrations.

HYGIENE, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENTBeing porous and breathable, i. e. highly permeable to water vapor,

wood allows the interaction with the environment better than any other material, by absorbing and releasing moisturewhile trying to reach the thermohygrometric balance. Even during the production process of laminated wood it is possible to adjust its values and to improve its behaviour in this respect.

RE6 – ENERGY CONSERVATION

Energy efficiency and consumption close to zero

EU's main objectives to be reached before 2020, in terms of sustainable development, can be summarised with three key points:• reducing greenhouse gas emissions of

20% compared to the levels of 1990 before 2020;

• increasing the proportion of renewable energy in the final consumption to 20%

• trying to increase energy efficiency of 20%

Wood is the material which meets best and "naturally" the requirements of lower environmental impact,

less waste of resources to produce and regenerate the raw material and it guarantees the best performances in terms of sound insulation.

Note: What is Life cycle assessment (LCA) How much energy is used in productive processes? How much energy will a product use during its operation? What will the environmental impact of its disposal be? Only one tool can answer all these questions: the LCA, Life Cycle Assessment. The assessment of energetic and environmental performance of every manufactured product in the building records the entire existence of a composite or of a system. This procedure, internationally regulated by ISO norms of the series 14040, includes activities like:•theuseofrawmaterials(laminatedwood, paints, glue, water,

power, natural gas) until the manufacture of goods; •transport, distribution, use and possible reuse of the entire

product(orofindividualcomponents);•collection,storageuntilrecoveryandfinaldisposalofrelated

wooden, plastic and ferrous waste.

In order to reach such goals, the EU aims at promoting a series of actions:• creating a low CO2 emission economy, which is more competitive and able to employ resources in an efficient

and sustainable way (PCF: Product Carbon Footprint);• protecting the environment, reducing emissions and preventing the loss of biodiversity; • developing new technologies and environment-friendly production methods; • in order to protect the use of natural resources, by designing, producing and using goods which can be easily

recycled and adopting a best practice policy through the LCA.

In order to estimate the energy class of an apartment with independent heating system, it is necessary to determine the annual consumption of natural gas for heating in square metres. Then, provided that one square metre of gas burnt in a traditional boiler (non-condensing boiler) produces approximately 8,3 heating kWh, it is necessary to multiply 8,3 by the square miles, thus obtaining the annual consumption in heating kWh. Lastly, it is necessary to divide such consumption by the square metres of usable floor space in oder to obtain the "annual consumption for square metre" expressed in kWh/year per sqm. The adjacent picture shows the reference values.

The utmost attention is paid to the performance of building envelops, which need to reduce significatively heat losses in winter and excessive sunlight in summer.

The official documentation in terms of energy conservation and sustainability is available on the website of the Italian entity responsibile, i.e. ENEA (National agency for new technologies, energy, and sustainable economic development).

www.enea.it

The thermal transmittance coefficient Uw indicates the amount of energy (heat/refrigeration) lost by the frame through its surface. This value is expressed in W/sqm K and is directly proportional to the heat loss through the frame.

The thermal transmittance values of Campesato framesfully comply with the maximum limits allowed

for each climatic area, and are also in accordance with the limits established by the "CasaClima" project of the Bolzano province.

It is possible to observe that Italy has been divided in climatic areas based on the temperature, the so-called "daily degrees" of each municipality. The daily degrees are the sum of the positive differences between the internal temperature of the room, set at 20°, and the medium daily exterior temperature. Therefore, the higher is the value of daily degrees, the colder is the climate and the lower is the Uw value required from the frame. THE MAP, which only has an indicative value, can help you find your climatic area. However, the exact zoning can be verified in the annexes to the Italian legislative decrees.

WOOD is the only raw material in the world, the production of which reduces carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and produces oxygen, thus improving the quality of air and life itself.

In favour of wood and of its very low environmental impact, the same nature of wood plays a key role. In order to understand this concept it is necessary to think of the chemical processes fundamental for the life of trees and to the production of timber as a raw material. The chlorophyll photosynthesis, which is fundamental for the growth of wood, needs solar energy, water -generally rainwater- and carbon dioxide, which is present in the air. Therefore, the production of wood reduces carbon dioxide in the air, thus freeing the atmosphere from this gas, which is responsible for the greenhouse effect.

Campesato's production and Good PracticesThe approach of Good Practices established itself at an international level at Habitat II, the Second United Nation Conference on Human Settlements, held in Istanbul in 1996.Starting this kind of productive processes (good practices) is not easy, because they need a radical change in the approach to working phases. However, the final result is fundamental for innovative solutions and developments in the environmental section.Good Practices are based on different standards, like ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14040. In addition to the quality certification of productive processes, Campesato adopts tools which need a new type of entrepreneurial and cultural approach to the environment. This approach can be defined as "proactive", i.e. aimed at acting before the norms are established in order to earn a competitive advantage against the competitors, which will have to adapt in the future.Following is a description of the various Campesato's working phases.

Wood from sustainably managed forests

For years Campesato has been using solelyCertiFied wood for the sustainable management of forests.

raw material It may appear that using trees as a raw material to obtain timber will damage the environment. In fact, it is possible to adopt sustainable ideals, which allow to avoid the impoverishment of the woodland of the planet and to obtain construction wood, including the finest wood (tropical or particular essences), from controlled forests. In these forests replanting is more

extensive than harvesting. For almost 20 years, a type of environmental management called "sustainable forest management and diversification" or "forestry" has been implemented. This kind of management requires the substitution of every harvested tree with younger and more efficient trees, which are able to obtain the most advantages from the chlorophyll photosynthesis.

Forestry has in fact the task to guarantee the right balance between mankind and nature. One of our essences, which best represents these concepts is red eUCALYPtUS GrANdiS originating from FSC-certified forests. In order to keep the undergrowth clear and to guarantee the manuring of land, cows, sheep and horses are allowed to graze in the wild. Red Grandis trees are harvested when they reach the full maturity and the correct diameter of the trunk. The cut is performed according to precise programmes and an accurate selection after about 18-20 years.

FSC is an independent not-for profit non-governmental organisation, which was established to promote the responsible management of forests in the whole world. Even WWF is working hard to promote it.

energy in productionCampesato's productive processes are driven by the goal of minimizing waste in order to reach the lowest environmental impact. The energy demand of the company is met through a series of

environmentally-friendly measures. The most part of production waste is composed of wood trimmings, chips and sawdust. Trimmings are divided among the employees for their domestic heating. Chips and sawdust are used to heat the entire production plant and offices. A photovoltaic power system integrated in the roofs of the buildings guarantees the supply of more than half of the power required.

transportAlthough transport is one of the critical points of the product life cycle, Campesato, in close cooperation with the company's trusted carriers, plans carefully the trips.

The loads are optimised by making customised pallets which allow to employ the entire capacity of containers.

InstallationThe energy efficiency of a building depends on the correct laying procedure and the careful selections of the materials to be used for installation (vapour barrier, self-expanding

sealing tape, polyurethane foam and correct sealants). Frames can be installed in many ways. Shown here is the kind of installation which currently offers the highest performance in terms of thermal and acoustic insulation and air tightness.

useCampesato's wooden frames are products of remarkable durability, high-quality manufacture and safe operating efficiency. They can be inserted with great efficiency in

the habitat, in order to reduce its energy impact and therefore the operational costs.

MaintenanceThe attention and care we dedicate to the things which are important to us make them remain beautiful. Thanks to its nature, wood does not lose value over time, instead it

acquires charm. Thanks to four coatings of paint, wooden frames can be easily maintained over time with simple cleaning operations using Campesato specific products.

Disposal/recoveryIn order to guarantee the efficient recovery of materials to recycle, the different components of the frame must be separated: wood, glass, iron, and plastic

materials. Campesato has procedures and areas dedicated to recovery and, thanks to the cooperation with recycling companies, it guarantees the correct disposal of products.

Wood is produced through a cycle which uses few processing resources, thus allowing an energy recovery, which is either complete or can be reintroduced in the natural cycle.

Graph 3 Water consumption

Frame energy content (source: ibo - Austrian institute for Healthy and ecological building)

The graph clearly shows the advantages linked to the use of wood in comparison with other materials, in terms of energy spent (red) and energy which can be recovered through recycling (green).

From aLCA comparative analysis on three types of frame, a study was conducted by a group of experts from CERT of Treviso Tecnologia. This research applies the upcoming European directives related to the Environmental Product Declarations, which will accompany all productions in the future, giving the consumers specific information on the environmental impact of products during their life cycle. The study considered three different impact indicators: •GWP100(GlobalWarmingPotential),whichincludestheemissionsofcarbondioxide(themaingreenhouse

gas)andothergasesduringtheentirelifecycleoftheproduct;•CumulativeEnergyDemand, anindicatorwhichanalysestheutilisationofenergyresources;•Life Cycle Inventory, an indicator which takes into account the water consumption in the different

management phases. The environmental performance of wooden frames proved exceptional for all three indicators.

As regards carbon dioxide emissions, during its entire life cycle - production, 5 year-service and disposal of the frame - a wooden frame producesatotalof283kgofCO2(databalancedbytheCO2 absorbed duringthephotosynthesisprocess)comparedto397kgofpvcframesand392kgofaluminiumframes(graph1).

As regards energy consumption, wooden frames record a total of 5,290.65MJ(megajoule)ofenergy,whereaspvcframes6,537.27andaluminiumframes6,041.41MJ(graph2).

Whilethelifecycleofawoodenframerequires2,515.35litresofwater,pvcframesrequire6,221.03litres,evenmorethanaluminiumframes,which need 5,153.65 litres. Both in terms of CO2 emissions and of energy and water consumption, the use of wood, a renewable material, generates less waste for extraction, processing and final disposal, compared to the use of non-renewable fossil material.

The production of frames requires woods, which are suitable for precision machining and the modern mechanised productive processes. These woods also need to be remarkably durable. Therefore not all species of wood can be used. This is why, aiming at diversifying and better managing resources, Campesato uses three species of wood, which are among the most suitable for the needs of the contemporary frame production.

THe besT esseNces

all the laminated wood used by the company originate from forests and sawmills

certified for forestry, and underwent artificial drying in order to eliminate (resins and undesired organisms like fungi and moulds) and to reach a humidity degree of 12% ± 3%, thus obtaining the mechanical resistance and dimensional stability necessary for a product like windows. The layers of timber are glued according to the applicable regulation EN 204 – class D4 for outdoors. In principle there is no absolute best wood for frames, although some woods are more valuable than others. Every kind of wood is special and has aesthetic features that will inspire your personal choice.

This wood is fairly heavy (dry mass: 500 Kg x m3) with hardness of 25 N/mm2. Yellowish/whitish sapwood clearly separated from the heartwood, which is rosy or brown/light reddish. The growth rings are distinct generating the ribbon stripe effect. Our boards are free of knots and have resistance and stability values above the average of the species, generally 95 N/mm2. The durability of laminated wood from Northern Europe (Scandinavia and Russian Federation) is excellent thanks to the low content of extractives in the trees.

This conifer has existed since the ice age and has been cultivated by man since remote times to obtain the precious resin, which was useful to distil tar and oil for various purposes, including lighting. Even today, this wood is extremely versatile and is used for any kind of purpose: carpentry, rustic furniture, pellet and for heating. The height of a tree mature to be harvested varies between 15 and 25 m. The low area of the trunk presents a fissured bark, whereas the higher area is thinner. The needles are arranged in couples, the pine cones are small and oval.

Oak is a broadleef tree belonging to the genus Quercus, which is cultivated and used everywhere in the world and in many types, thanks to its features of dynamic resistance, wood density, easy finishing and remarkable abrasion resistance. This species is so popular that some "false" species have been cultivated in Asia.Oak is deeply linked with the inhabitants of temperate zones and it traditionally represents strength and continuity of time. Its acorns are the main food for many animals and its wood has always been used for ship structures and the poles which support the city of Venice. Since the start of industrialization, oak charcoal has been the preferred fuel. Oak was also important for tannin used in the tanneries and for the railway sleepers. Today, oak is used for houses, bridges, barrels, floors, frames, fine and rustic furniture and many otherpurposes.WineandwhiskeyproducersfromallovertheworlduseexclusivelywhiteorEuropeanoakfortheir barrels. Its universally recognised versatility and capacity to renew itself, make oak a timeless wood and the ideal choice for various finishes and treatments, including in Campesato's sector. Red Grandis is a hard, strong and versatile wood with a fast growth. It has a straight grain with medium texture and a rosy-creamy white colour. The specific weight is 530 kg/m3. Red Grandis is obtained from the Eucalyptus Grandis, also known as rose gum. Eucalyptus Grandis is a tall tree with smooth bark, rough at the base, grey to grey-brown. At maturity, it reaches 50 metres tall, though the largest specimens can exceed 80 metres tall. It is found on coastal areas and sub-coastal ranges in many parts of the world, mainly on flat land and lower slopes, where it is the dominant tree of wet forests and on the margins of rainforests. The species name grandis ("large") relates to this tree's large size. The glossy dark green leaves are stalked, and paler on their undersides, 10 to 16 cm (4–6.4 in) long. The hardwood is resistant to insects, has an excellent dimensional stability with high humidity degrees and is therefore recommended for outdoors.

Red Grandis is the commercial name of a particular type of tree belonging to the eucalyptus family. The Eucalyptus Grandis tree is pruned and its branches are cut up to a 10 m height. The tree is harvested after about 18/20 years. Cultivated in Uruguay, the Red Grandis has boasted the FSC C000022 certification since 2001. Being a hard kind of wood, it is considered the best alternative to mahogany - meranti - spele - okoume. Red Grandis is a sustainable wood, originating from certified forests where the cultivation aims at preserving the land. The responsible and controlled harvesting of the timber guarantees and protects a stable and growing market.WithRedGrandisstrictsocialandenvironmentalnormshavebeenreachedandtodayitisavailabletrhoughout the year. Campesato uses excellent quality paints to protect wood from the atmospheric agents. The painting of frames is composed of coloured impregnating primer to protect the surface lignin, neutral impregnating primer to insulate from humidity (both primers are applied by flow coating), base coating and innovative resin based finish in water emulsion, which reduce the destruction of the wood layer on which paint is anchored. These special molecules also contain particular UV filters for protection against solar rays. the application of these chemical compounds with a robot system which erogates the same amount of product on the whole area of the frame guarantees extreme durability in every condition. The painting process on oak to obtain the "bleached" effect also represents the state of the art of technology for finishes, ensuring the maximum reliability and protection against the yellowing due to tannin extractives of wood.

aCOuStIC InSulatIOnNoise pollution is one of the main stress factors, able to reduce our physical well-being -both during the day and at night- and our concentration, causing the development of disorders including mental disorders. In Italy, the decree of the Council of Ministers dated 5 December 1997 established the passive acoustic requirements of all components of the building envelope, in order to reduce the human exposure to noise. The decree introduces the weighted sound reduction index for one element of the building (Rw) and for the acoustic insulation of façades (D2m.ntw).the sound-insulating power of an element (rw) is the capacity to reduce the sound transmission and it is a inherent physical property. the acoustic insulation of façades (D) is the difference of sound level between indoors and outdoors. It allows for the sound absorption characteristic of the receiving environment.

A careful design of the building will determine the sound-insulating performance of every component of the envelope, including the frames. It is possible to summarize the key points to be considered for an informed choice of frames in terms of acoustic insulation:•wooden frame, with low sound transmission and two plastic and thermal acoustic gaskets with different

structure and air permeability of at least class 3 out of 4;• regardingthedouble-glazing,thebestresultsareobtainedbyworkingonthethickness of glass lites(mass

law) and the asymmetric composition of the lites/cavities to reduce the resonance frequency, or by using the modern laminated glass with sound-insulating plastic material;

• laying executed in a workmanlike manner, fundamental for a fine frame.

SafetySafety is regulated by the technical standard UNI 7697 of 2002, recently updated in January 2007 and mentioned by the Italian legislative decree 206/2005 "Consumer code", by the law 229 of July 2003, and by the Italian legislative decree 172/2004 "general product safety and therefore has legal value: designer, supplier and installer are fully liable. The standard dispositions which interest us are those related to laminated glass walls. These dispositions establish that, if there is a possibility of contact on both sides, safety glasses must be used. For residential purposes, glasses with bottom side less than 1000 mm far from the walk-over flooring must be laminated, both internally and externally. For parapets, anti-fall glass must be used. The standard also establishes the obligation to use laminated safety glasses: These glasses are kept together by inserted plastic material (PVB- Polyvinyl butyral). The classification for safety is based on the level of resistance against impacts and housebreak. The level of resistance is defined by three standards:

• UNI EN 12600 - impact resistance;

• UNI EN 356 -resistance to housebreak;

• UNI EN 1063 – resistance to firearms

eNergy CoNServatIoN aNd Solar proteCtIoNThe frame is the main factor of heath loss and solar radiation in our houses. The heat exchanges of the modern insulating glass walls are measured by the thermal transmittance (Ug - W/m2K), which is explained in the certifications section.

The heat exchange through a wall or a glass wall happens in three ways:

• conduction, the heat transfer between bodies in direct contact, without movement of matter. In glass it is the heat flow between the two sides according to the temperature and the material conductivity;

• convection, the heat transfer between a solid body and a fluid or a gas, together with movement of matter;

• radiation, the electromagnetic heat transfer between two bodies at different temperatures (e.g. the solar radiation towards the Earth). Radiation is influenced by the surface emissivity of bodies, a coefficient which is =0,89 for standard glass.

the introduction of layers of noble metals as low- emissivity coating for glasses reduces the heat transfer outwards, thus halving the heat losses compared to traditional double-glazing. By adding inside the cavity noble gases (argon / Krypton) which are heavier than air, it is possible to reduce the conduction and convection exchanges, thus reaching an energy consumption of one third compared to a normal double-glazing.

The double-glazing spacer or peripheral joint is also subject to heat loss and to condensation, because of the frequent thermal bridging in this area of the glass wall, due to the aluminium usually used for the joint. Recently new materials have been introduced, like steel and plastic materials, because their thermal conductivity is significantly lower than the one of aluminium. the so-called "warm-edge" halves the peripheral heat losses of double-glazing, increases the surface temperature of the lites and reduces condensation. this goes to the advantage of the general Uw value of the frame.

Page 47: Guide to choose

47

The glass wall also receives the solar radiation. The percentage of solar energy passing through the double-glazing in relation to the total incident energy is called solar factor (g). The solar energy transfer through the glass can cause, under certain conditions and in particular climatic periods, significant temperature increases in the rooms. This phenomenon can be avoided using "solar control" glasses or the innovative "selective glasses", which allow the passage of a certain percentage of the solar radiation, although they ensure good lighting and, for selective glasses, the reduction of heat losses outwards. The reflecting and low-emissivity panels are subject to particular treatments which alter their original neutral colour, a feature which can be verified especially with particular angles of solar and artificial light. Apart from these panels, all other glasses are transparent and available in the printed or satin-finished versions upon request.

•acoustic insulation glass Optilam® Acoustic glass is composed of two glass panels kept together by one or more specific films with

sound-insulating power. This kind of double-glazing can hinder the noise pollution from roads, planes and other sources.

• Safety glass Safety glass is composed by two glass panels kept together by a film which, in case of

breaking, ensures the protection against accidental impact. The glass fragments stick to the film avoiding cuts and the risk of fall.

• low emissivity glass top n® Low emissivity glass is transparent to solar thermal radiation, thus allowing the radiation to

enter in the building and preventing the loss of heat from the heating bodies.

• low emissivity glass top n® with gas For a better thermal insulation, the air between the two glasses can be replaced by noble gases

like Argon and Krypton, which have an inferior thermal exchange coefficient compared to air and significantly increase thermal insulation.

• Double-glazing Double-glazing is composed of two glass lites separated by an aluminium or pvc cavity

(warm edge) containing air or gas. The spacer between the two lites contains salts to prevent condensation within the glass.

• Double double-glazing The double double-glazing is composed of three glass lites separated by two aluminium or pvc

cavities (warm edge) containing air or gas. The spacer between the coupled lites contains salts to prevent condensation within the glass. Choosing the most suitable triple glass it is possible to improve the thermal performance of the frame.

according to the different needs of the projects, it is possible to use different kinds of glass. today, the market offers a wide range of glass with a variety of features which are suitable to each use.

• anti-intrusion (anti-vandalism) glass Anti-intrusion glass is composed of many coupled glasses kept together by a film suitable to

protect against vandalism and housebreak.

• bulletproof glass Bulletproof glass can be made by combining two or more kinds of glass, a fixed and a soft one,

or by inserting a plastic film on the glass surface. In the first case, the bulletproof glass is made elastic by the soft layer, which makes it flex rather than explode. In the latter case, the protective film prevents the glass from shattering.

• Selective glass energy® Selective glass is a kind of glass which can filter solar rays thus reducing the heat transfer

towards the building and controlling the heat diffusion due to radiation. This kind of glass ensures an excellent thermal insulation by controlling the heat due to solar radiation and offers superior energy performance.

• Satin-finished glass It is often necessary to protect the privacy of rooms like the bathroom. In this case, the ideal

glass is satin-finished, sand-blasted or printed, according to the desired opacity degree and effect.

nAtUrAl light controlThe use of completely or partially automatic systems for the control of natural lighting contributes to create some advantages: the increase of visual and thermal comfort in the rooms and the energy savings thanks to a reduced consumption of power for lighting.Very often the heat from the sun enters the rooms and is eliminated by air-conditioning. Filtering systems inside the house are not ideal to limit the solar factor entering through the glass walls, because they stop heat when it has already entered.Selective glass reduces such effects but it also reduces natural lighting. No matter how performing the double-glazing is, it is not able to avoid the heat transfer like an external shading system. Shading systems are installed outside buildings to reduce air conditioning and to increase comfort, other than to manage the light control. The trend of contemporary living, increasingly more concerned with energy savings, is to reduce the costs of glass walls by using transparent glasses and preferring efficient alternatives of external light control. These solutions are also increasingly appreciated in terms of design.

Page 54: Guide to choose

54

Brise soleil, sometimes brise-soleil (from French, "sun breaker"), is an architectural feature of a building which reduces heat gain within that building by deflecting sunlight. The concept of brise soleils is inspired by window blinds and is completely realised with wood. Inclined slats are mounted on a completely retractable frame without visible screws both from the inside and the outside. Brise soleils can be installed as a fixed or side-sliding structure, thus allowing to adjust the amount of solar radiation which can enter directly or through passive solar radiation.francesearchitetturatenda veneziana

58

Shutters represent the oldest architectural solution to protect against bad weather and to increase the thermal-insulation and the passive safety of the frame system. The use of intradoses between shutter and window efficiently solves the problems related to installation difficulties and coating of the jamb. This solution also allows the installation of retractable insect screens.

Campesato's shutters can be made according to the indications of the chapters "The colours of wood" and "Which shape", using first quality wood.

Campesato's frames also distinguish themselves for their hardware, which is completely designed and produced in Italy. The high performance of these components allows to successfully pass all the tests required by the regulations in force, thus improving the functionality of frames as well. The main innovations are in terms of capacity, safety, resistance to oxidation, and durability:

• certified standard load of 150 kg for each sash

• stronger and adjustable safety latch, with a telescopic and therefore smoother motion

• Standard treatment , resistant to salt-spray: salt-spray tests for corrosion reached record levels for durability. More than 2000 hours of testing successfully passed.

• periodic tests for the ageing of non-ferrous materials

• durability test: 25,000 successful opening/closing cycles (4 o/c a day for 20 years)

• cyclic tests on openings, locks, hinges and tilt and turn windows.

In order to reach a certified high safety level, it is necessary to consider different factors: the frames, the laying of the frames and of glass. The window and French window system has to be homogeneous in all its components:

a) choice of the false frame, made with resistant material (steel or iron) and installed according to the applicable regulations

b) choice of glass, which must belong to a safety class according to the applicable international standards (EN 356 - EN 1063)

c) using the right hardware for the window or the French window, in order to prevent as much as possible breaking and entering with metallic tools.

In order to protect the house and the people who live in it, Campesato offers numerous accessories for front door frames:• two types of locks produced by AGB, the reliable Sicurtop with opening and closure by key, and the innovative

lock Poseidon. Poseidon is a safety lock for entrance doors and French windows which guarantees a high level of protection against housebreak. It is composed of two hooks, the so-called Poseidon, and a central bolt.

• Both Sicurtop and Poseidon can be equipped with cylinders with anti-pull and anti-drill cam with class 4 safety (UNI 9579), keys with different combinations (same key, master key, general, etc.) which can only be duplicated with the personal duplication card.

• Entrance doors can be also equipped with anti-burglar inserts to be installed on the hinge side, in order to prevent extraction of elements in cases of damage due to attempted break in.

An innovative locking system, always by AGB, allows a housebreak resistance previously unimaginable also on external shutters and louvers. The new lock has reduced dimensions and no handles. The movement happens from the key, which may be unique and also control the front door and the entrance French window. Thanks to the wide range of available strikers, it is suitable for shutters with one-piece and brick-in frames: the configuration with three locking points is certified for the antiburglar class 2 according to UNI ENV 1627÷ 1630.

A company aiming at satisfying the needs and expectations of the customers, including international customers, must be driven by a quality policy and the continuous control of the products it sells. At Campesato, the compliance with the minimum certification classes established by European norms is just the starting point. The goal is obtaining the voluntary mark of conformity which proves performance standards higher than those of the compulsory norms, both in terms of technique and of ethics. LegnoFinestraItalia is the symbol of the Italian frame production with high quality woods. It originated from the will of important Italian producers like Campesato to group solely those Italian companies, which have adopted the "excellence values": product quality, performance, comfort, guarantees for the consumers, safety, ethics. The results obtained in the performance tests demonstrate the value of Campesato's work method.

AIR pERmEAbILITy (UNI EN 1026 - UNI EN 12207)

IT IS THE characteristic of a closed window to let air penetrate in case of a pressure difference between inside and outside. The classification is assessed by measuring the air losses due to the applied pressures (Pascal - Pa), in accordance with the norm UNI EN 122007 which foresees four performance classes (1, 2, 3, 4).

WATER TIghTNEss (UNI EN 1027 – UNI EN 12208)

IT IS THE capability to prevent water infiltration under a differential pressure (Pascal – Pa) between inside and outside which is the same to the test pressure for air permeability. This is established by the norm UNI EN 12208, which defines nine classes for frames, combined with the test method A, with respect to completely exposed frames (1A, 2A, 3A... 9A).

WINd REsIsTANCE (UNI EN 12211 – UNI EN 12210)

IT IS the capability of a frame subject to high pressures and/or depressures, like those due to wind, to maintain an acceptable deformation, to preserve its properties and to guarantee the safety of users. The UNI EN 12210 norm classifies the frames according to the pressures (Pascal – Pa) of wind in five classes (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) and three classes according to the permanent deformation undergone (A, B, C). The combination of these classes defines the performance (C3, B5, A1 etc.). Below is a comparison table between the pressures in Pascal and the equivalent wind speed.

ThERmAL TRANsmITTANCE (UNI EN ISO 10077-1 UNI EN ISO 10077-2)

The thermal transmittance coefficient (U) is a value obtained through electronic algorithms and indicates the amount of energy (heating/refrigeration) which is lost by the frame across its surface. Such value is expressed in W/m2K, is directly proportional to the heat loss through the frame and basically depends on the kind of glass and wood used.

We determine the characteristics of resistance to break of windows, doors, shutters under static and dynamic load, attack carried out by manual tools or devices specified in the test methods; through such tools and devices we simulate the actions most commonly taken by the burglar who enters through the windows, in homes. At the end of the tests we detect degradations and the time it took to open the frame, and determine the strength class of the window and following tabular standards. At the end of the test you should not create an opening accessible within the time allowed.

mEChANICAL pROpERTIEs (UNI EN 12046-1, UNI EN 14608, UNI EN 14609, UNI EN 947, UNI EN 948, UNI EN 949, UNI EN 950, UNI EN 1192, UNI EN 13115)

Examining the behaviour of the fixtures which are subjected to mechanical stress that simulate the wrong operations, one ensures what is necessary for the opening and closing as well as the durability of the entire window and door accessory. At the end of the tests the windows must not have cracks or deformations that can significantly affect their functionality.

We reiterate the concept of sound-insulation as already expressed in the glazing section : it is the ability of a building element to provide protection against noise, safeguarding the inhabitability of the housing. It is identified with Rw and it is measured in dB. This value can be measured directly in the laboratory according to the norms UNI EN ISO 140-3 and UNI EN ISO 717-1, which involve the construction of a double measure of reverberation chamber and the correction of the measurements obtained, or, within the limit of 38 dB and respecting certain constraints, as derived from the tables given in UNI EN 14351-1.

The wooden-aluminium frame is the perfect union of the two construction systems, the sum of the qualities of wood like the natural thermal insulation, its beauty and malleability and of those of aluminium, like the complete absence of maintenance and the aesthetic excellence. From the constructive point of view, the frame is composed by a wooden structure on which an aluminium outer covering is applied through clips, in order to achieve the thermal and acoustic comfort.

WELdINg The aluminium outer covering is made of drawn profiles of 1,5 mm thickness and welded in all angles, differently from the common use, thus guaranteeing the maximum stability to the whole frame. The painting after the welding guarantees angles with perfect sealing, completely protected by the paint, and improves the

aspect of the final product. (1)

The lift-and-slide openings are a type of sliding systems the functioning of which is based on the sliding of the sashes on the track. During the opening, the frame lifts slightly (therefore the lift-and-slide definition) to allow the opening of the window. Special gaskets and rubber seals mounted on floor sills allow to eliminate completely water infiltrations and air draughts. This kind of mechanism allows minimized profiles and lowered sills, and therefore broader glass surfaces and large sashes. The sashes of Campesato lift-and-slide systems can reach a 3 m width and a 3 m height. Through the use of sliding track with innovative

technology, it is possible to reach up to 300 Kg loads on each sash. The range of available solutions includes models with fixed and sliding sashes, on simple or double tracks, always combinable with other types of frames produced by the company.

The Campesato parallel sliding system is a frame with high thermal comfort and excellent acoustic and water-tightness performances. Itis composed of two sashes, one of which slides on a sliding track which is parallel to the first sash (carter). The opening of the sliding sash is coplanar and allows the opening of the tilt and turn sash. Thanks to the special handles, the opening and closing of the sliding systems are extremely easy. A handle with pulling command allows the opening and closing of the sash trough a forced control system installed as a standard. Thanks to this control, the shutter is accompanied towards the frame automatically for a perfect closure without effort.

Sliding position: when the tilt position is blocked, the sliding shutter stops in parallel and is pushed sideways for opening.Tilt position: during ventilation, the supports keep the shutter open even in case of wind.
