Guessing game: artwork descriptions

Afternoon group

Page 2: Guessing Game Afternoon

Description 1In this painting you can see two lovers in a moving embrace. Both are covered with a large and exotic yellow mantle. The background is painted with ocher and brown colours and some textures like sand and golden dust. It looks like a beautiful night. The couple are on the edge of a green, blossoming abyss. The woman is on her knees with her eyes closed. Her face transmits the peace of an eternal moment of happiness frozen in time. THE KISS by Gustav Klimt.

Description 2

In this painting you can see the shape of a boat and behind it the masts of sailboats. Everything is against the light because the orange sun is just behind. Orange and blue colours abound in this impressionist painting, which reflects peace, calm and stability. IMPRESSION: SUNRISE,

by Claude Monet

Description 3

In this painting we can see a nude girl on a shell with three persons around, situated at the water's edge. The nude girl is next to another young woman, but she is dressed and carries a large blanket. On the other side we find Zephyr embraced to a girl. The landscape is perhaps very simple in comparison with the characters. This masterpiece is dominated by bright colours, which are concentrated above all in the characters who express motion.

THE BIRTH OF VENUS by Sandro Botticelli

In this painting you can see a village during the night. You can see a tree on the left-hand side of the painting, but it is very dark. The colors used in the painting are especially blue tones, but in the swirling sky the moon and some stars are painted with yellow tones. On the right-hand side you can also see some hills.

The Starry Nightby Vincent van Gogh

This sculpture is a big sitting figure made of a black vinyl-coated inflatable fabric. It has a height of 35 meters. The author uses the language and imagery of the all-pervasive American consumer culture. The figure is similar to the character of Pinocchio, with a long nose and a square head. Blockhead

by Paul McCarthy

Description 6

This marble sculpture is the only one signed by its artist. It is a round shaped sculpture which can be seen from all angles, but preferably from the front. The sculpture shows a woman and a young man. He is lying across the woman’s lap and she has a sad expression on her face. There is a fantastic sheet with many folds clearly visible in the foreground.

Pietà by Michelangelo

Description 7

This painting, a mural-size oil on canvas, is grey, black and white. It shows the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. This work has gained a monumental status, becoming a perpetual reminder of the tragedies of war, an anti-war symbol, and an embodiment of peace.

GUERNICAby Pablo Picasso

This fresco is one of the greatest works of the Renaissance art period. It was painted in order to please the eyes because of the rich and lively colours it has. This fresco provokes a sense of harmony, mainly due to its composition. The painting represents a scene from ancient classic Athens. One can spot Aristotle and Plato in the centre. It makes one think of civilization, democracy and serenity.

THE SCHOOL OF ATHENSby Raphael

Description 9This work of art is the last and the most dramatic piece painted by the artist. Nature and the landscape are distorted, rough and full of omens. The picture reflects the artist’s tensions. He doesn´t mix the colours in the palette and he paints without a prior sketch or project. In the sky, the eddies that are formed remind us of his other night scenes. The mournful crows are painted with little and fast lines of black colour than become smaller as the birds move farther away and they are mixed up with the darker part of the bottom of the sky. We can also observe the abrupt perspective of the paths that cross the countryside. The painter concentrates only on the expressive intensity. The separated and overlapped brushstrokes can be counted one by one, following the precise tracks of the artist.

Wheat Field with Crowsby Vincent Van Gogh

Description 10

This sculpture shows a naked man who defeated Goliath. He represents the ideal of beauty and harmony (perfect proportions) of the Renaissance. Thanks to his large size (4 metres tall) he transmits strength to me and through his face he conveys serenity.

David by Michelangelo

In the painting you can see a lot of multicolored circles. In every circle you can see a series of circumferences in various colors. The background for each circle was painted in a different color, too.

Description 12

In this sculpture you can see a pensive sitting woman almost naked. She is tall and has a broad body. One of her body parts is especially conspicuous, and is related to the sculpture’s title. The artwork is located somewhere in Tenerife.

FECUNDIDADby Francisco Borges

Let´s talk about an awesome painting. It represents the nautical and dramatical scene of a shipwrecked group. They were adrift for thirteen days. The enviroment is a tempestuous sea and in the background we can see a sky with similar features. The scene reflects tension and desperation. Delacroix posed in this painting as a model.

The Raft of the Medusaby Théodore Géricault.

Description 14

In the painting you can see a little group of women, concretely five, with different poses, but with a similar attitude. They were painted with different shades of the same color and with geometric forms. The background was painted in blue.

Les Demoiselles d'Avignon by Picasso

Description 15

In this painting there is a romantic scene. In the foreground we can see a couple kissing, but we can’t see their faces, because they have their heads covered. In the background we can observe a blue wall. On the right edge, there is an orange band that represents a wall, and at the top we can see there is a white ceiling. For this reason, we know this couple is inside a house.

The Lovers
