JIM COLLINSJim Collins is a student and teacher of leadership and what makes great companies tick.

Having invested a quarter century of research into the topic, he has authored or co-authored six books that have sold in total more than ten million copies worldwide. They include: Good to Great, the #1 bestseller, which examines why some companies and leaders make the leap to superior results, along with its companion work Good to Great and The Social Sectors; the enduring classic Built to Last, which explores how some leaders build companies that remain visionary for generations; How the Mighty Fall, which delves into how once-great companies can self-destruct; and most recently, Great by Choice, which is about thriving in chaos why some do, and others dont and the leadership behaviors needed in a world beset by turbulence, disruption, uncertainty and dramatic change.

Driven by a relentless curiosity, Jim began his research and teaching career on the faculty at Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1992. In 1995, he founded a management laboratory in Boulder, Colorado, where he conducts research and engages in Socratic dialogue with CEOs and senior leadership teams. In addition to his work in the business sector, Jim has passion for learning and teaching in the social sectors, including education, healthcare, government, faith-based organisations, social ventures and cause-driven non-profits. In 2012 and 2013, he had the honour to serve a two-year appointment as the Class of 1951 Chair for the Study of Leadership at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Jim holds a bachelors degree in mathematical sciences and an MBA from Stanford University, and honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Colorado and the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University.

He is an avid rock climber, with one-day ascents of the north face of Half Dome and the 3,000 foot south-face of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley.

  • AGENDA

CHARACTERISTICS AND BEHAVIOURS TO LEAD YOUR BUSINESS TO GREATNESS

Presented by Jim CollinsJim Collins will reveal the findings from his nine-year research which asks the simple question: Why do some companies thrive in uncertainty, even chaos, and others do not? When buffeted by tumultuous events, when hit by big, fast-moving forces that we can neither predict nor control, what distinguishes those who perform exceptionally well from those who underperform or worse?

We live in a world where we can no longer predict with certainty the twists and turns our lives will take. Throughout the world, technological change and global competition continues on a relentless, disruptive march. Life is uncertain, the future unknown.

Yet some companies and leaders navigate this type of world exceptionally well. They dont merely react; they create. They dont merely survive; they prevail. They dont merely succeed; they thrive. They build great enterprises that can endure. We do not believe that chaos, uncertainty, and instability are good; companies, leaders, organisations and societies do not thrive on chaos. But they can thrive in chaos.

Jim will take you through the behaviours and characteristics of companies that achieve such spectacular results, especially when direct comparisons companies operating in the same fast-moving, unpredictable, and tumultuous environments do not. Part of the answer lies in the distinctive behaviours of their leaders.

  • FIVE WAYS LEADERS CAN INSPIRE TEAMS TO PERFORM AT THEIR BEST

Presented by Liz WisemanIn this session, Liz will show business leaders how to look beyond their own capability to amplify the intelligence of the people who they manage. She will share the research behind Multipliers and illustrate the resoundingly positive and profitable effect that these leaders have on their organisations, including how they:

Get more done with fewer resources

    Develop and attract talent

Cultivate new ideas and energy to drive organisational change and innovation.

Multipliers Disciplines identifies five practical ways in which leaders can grow the intelligence and talent of employees. These include:

Attracting the best talent and using those people at their highest point of contribution

    Encouraging liberated thinking

    Challenging people

    Debating concepts

Delivering extraordinary results without direct management.

  • ALIGN YOUR TEAM TO DRIVE ACCOUNTABILITY AND RESULTS

Presented by Verne HarnishWhen a business is scaled properly, there should be some economies of scale that kick in. Growth should feel like wind at your back, propelling your firm through the turbulent waters of the marketplace rather than the anchor described above. To achieve this, Vernes presentation will focus on three deliverables:

Reduce by 80% the time it takes the leadership team to lead and manage the business

Give the leadership team more time for market-facing activities

Get everyone else aligned and on the same page in terms of language, goals and priorities (which further frees up the leadership team).

Verne will also discuss the three barriers to scaling up and how you can start to overcome them:

Leadership: The inability to grow enough leaders and their capabilities to delegate and predict

Systems and structures: The lack of systems and structures to handle the communication and decision complexity that comes with growth

Market dynamics: Failing to navigate the increasingly tricky market dynamics that mark arrival in a larger marketplace.
