Just ask any of the 700 adults and 300 children who sought counseling through Samaritan in 2014. Just ask Sandra Began, who came to Samaritan after an unthinkable loss. Here’s her story, which she encouraged us to share.

Sandra’s Story

“Our counselors saved myself and my children after the suicide of my husband and their father. Our worlds were turned upside down, and our counselors were able to help us find peace, understanding and light in our very dark world.

We are forever changed, but we all are able to accept our new lives because we had compassionate, educated, empathetic and caring counselors helping us find our way. We are now a family of three, not four, who can live, laugh and love because of the help we were given. All I can say is thank you.”

Community WellnessConnected Community Wellness Screen provides free, voluntary, confidential emotional wellness check-ups to teens at their school. We serve Appleton and Kaukauna school districts and in 2014 expanded into Appleton’s Xavier High School and Oshkosh high schools.

QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) suicide intervention training program equips everyday people to intervene when someone feels hopeless. Grants from the J. J. Keller Foundation and Ministry Health Care and a partnership with Prevent Suicide Fox Cities make this possible. Almost 600 people were QPR trained in 2014.

Clergy and Congregation Care strengthens congregations and their leaders. In 2014, Samaritan, together with NAMI Fox Valley, presented Creating Hope. This first-of-its-kind conference brought together 70 professional and volunteer faith leaders to equip themselves to support those in their faith communities struggling with mental health challenges. Living Healthy Community Clinic, operated by the UW Oshkosh College of Nursing, provides confidential, cost-effective medical and mental health care to the uninsured and underinsured. Samaritan Counseling provides counseling on contract with the college and Mercy Medical Clinic. The J. J. Keller Foundation funds this collaboration.

New Leader Named in 2014

Rosangela Berbert, a longtime Samaritan Counseling Center innovator and leader, was named executive director in December 2014.

Rosangela (pronounced hoe-SAN-gel-ah) was chaplain at Colégio Londrinense, a school in Londrina, Brazil, before relocating to Oshkosh

in 2002. She began her career with Samaritan in 2005 as an intern.

In 2006 she and her faith community, First Presbyterian Church of Oshkosh, co-founded Project Open Door. The program gives children in need access to counseling.

Rosangela served as Samaritan’s clinical director from 2010 to 2014. She brings warmth, grace and good humor to the executive director role.
