Growing Pains Romans 8:22-26
460 Marcus Garvey Boulevard Brooklyn, New York 11216Reverend Adolphus C. Lacey, PhD • Senior Pastor 718-455-8400 • www. bethanybklyn.org
Our Purpose . . . Why we exist! To God be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all gen-erations forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:21
Our Vision . . . Where we want to go!Our vision is to engage in relevant ministry that empowers individuals and responds to the needs of the diverse community in which we live. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:18-19
Our Mission What we do!
Our mission is to offer Christ-centered fellowship, and holistic ministry that meets the needs of the whole person: spiri-tually, mentally, and physically. We inten-tionally seek to love our neighbor as our-selves, save souls, and transform lives by proclaiming gospel truth to power and providing purpose driven programs.
Our Core Values . . . How we do it!We value excellence: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men. .Colossians 3:23We value growth: But grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 3:18.We value unity: Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers and sisters to dwell together in unity! Psalm 133:1We value hospitality: And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded. Matthew 10:42 We value diversity: We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. Romans 12:6We value sacrifice: And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice. Romans 12:1We value creativity: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Isaiah 43:18-19We value social justice: But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! Amos 5:24 We value our heritage: One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. Psalms 145:4
Beloved,
While we are still at the beginning of my second year, and even though we may
not come out and say it out loud, we probably all think of things we would like to
do better, and ways we can improve our lives so that when we get to May 2016,
we can look back and give thanks to God for helping us to do better. As a
Christian, we must always have that desire to “do better” and become all that
God wants us to be not only for our own sake, but for the sakes of our families
and a lost and dying world searching for answers.
While we make our list of things to do, whether it be in our minds, or on paper, or
in a computer, we must also know that the enemy of our souls has also made a
list, and this list doesn’t deviate or change a whole lot from person to person
over time, but is basically the same list the enemy has used for years and years to
thwart and inhibit the advance of the church, and more specifically, the child of
God.
I wish to encourage you to continue to remain “on alert” and vigilant in this day
we live, realizing that as you advance and make progress in the Lord, to keep an
eye out for the enemy and his ways. The Bible says this in; 1 Peter 5:8-9 “Be sober,
be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion,
seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that
the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.”
I would also encourage you to do what you can this season, with the help of the
Holy Spirit to make an impact in the world around you by simply being faithful
and obedient to God’s leading in your life. Be sensitive to God’s voice, and you
will be amazed at what God will do! That traffic jam is not always an event
caused by the enemy. Perhaps there’s an “appointment” you don’t know
about! That person in the shopping line so irritated may not always be
unreasonable, especially when you take time to simply bless them, and look for
an opportunity to minister kindness to them.
If we will simply do some of the small things, they will add up into something big
accomplished for the Kingdom of God over the next year, and you will look
back in appreciation to the Lord for the way He has led you.
Thanks for being part of us here at the Bethany Church. Our journey is just
beginning!!!
With a Shepherd’s Love,
Pastor Lacey

PRAISE & WORSHIP
**THE CALL TO WORSHIP
Rejoice, for today is a new day, and the beginning of a season to celebrate! This is
indeed a new day. For today we begin a journey, a journey to prepare our hearts for
the coming of God’s Spirit. Let us set our minds on the God of love, and prepare our
hearts for God's gift of God’s Spirit. Blessed be the name of the Lord!
**THE EVOCATION (In Unison)
We recognize, gracious God, that the maturing of our spiritual nature is an ongoing
process of growth. We ask for courage and strength as we move from being
vulnerable children in the faith toward adults who are able to speak the truth in love
and to hear truth spoken in love. In the name of Christ. Amen.

17 “See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not
be remembered, nor will they come to mind. 18 But be glad and rejoice
forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its
people a joy. 19 I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people;
the sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more. 20 “Never
again will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man
who does not live out his years; the one who dies at a hundred will be
thought a mere child; the one who fails to reach a hundred will be
considered accursed. 21 They will build houses and dwell in them; they will
plant vineyards and eat their fruit. 22 No longer will they build houses and
others live in them, or plant and others eat. For as the days of a tree, so will
be the days of my people; my chosen ones will long enjoy the work of their
hands. 23 They will not labor in vain, nor will they bear children doomed to
misfortune; for they will be a people blessed by the LORD, they and their
descendants with them. 24 Before they call I will answer; while they are still
speaking I will hear. 25 The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion
will eat straw like the ox, and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will neither
harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,” says the LORD.
SERMONIC SCRIPTURE ~ Romans 8:22-26 (NIV)
22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of
childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who
have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our
adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we
were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they
already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it
patiently. 26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not
know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us
through wordless groans.
