From Father Michael Van Lian, Burmese Community:

Arise from the dead, and Christ will give

you light. (Ephesians 5:14) At times life must shout to us our need of Christ's light in our lives. We might spend our days sleep-walking until we are struck by events that truly wake us up and make us search for light to walk by. We need to turn to God for the power to stop our destructive habits and to allow God to open us to more and more of God's blessings in this world. In Lent, we get into the habit of inviting and urging each other to advance further into the light and life of Christ: "Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." We benefit by those words repeated to us, as we learn day by day to live with the risen Jesus and to follow the path, he illumines in front of us. The Holy Spirit wonderfully polishes your life to reflect Jesus' light. Thus, wherever you are and whatever you are doing, your main task for God is to find ways to let God's light shine from you.

March 17, 2020 Statement of Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann

Regarding Cancellation of

Public Masses in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas

In conjunction with the bishops of Kansas, ef-fective 1 p.m. March 17, 2020, and until further no-tice, all public celebrations of the Holy Mass in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas are can-celled except for funeral Masses. Funeral Masses must be limited to no more than 50 people, includ-ing clergy, assisting ministers, family members and friends. No funeral luncheons may be held. A fu-neral liturgy outside of Mass must be limited in size as above. In addition to celebrating the funeral Mass or funeral liturgy outside of Mass, families and pastors are encouraged to schedule Memorial Masses for their loved ones in the future, when public health restrictions are relaxed, so that larger numbers may gather if desired. All communal penance services are cancelled. Priests should continue as much as possible to of-fer individual confessions at regularly scheduled times, including Wednesday evenings during Lent. Confessions are to be heard only behind a screen or other barrier and not face to face. At no time should there be more than 50 people gathered in the church. Baptisms may continue but only parents, god-parents and immediate family members who are asymptomatic may attend, and in no case more than 50 people. I encourage all of the faithful to continue to join together in prayer for the health and protection of our entire community and nation, and for an end to this crisis. I encourage all families and individuals to pray the rosary, invoking the intercession and protection of our Blessed Mother, Health of the Sick, for these intentions and for the health and well-being of our brothers and sisters who are ill, for their caretakers, and for all doctors, nurses, medical and emergency preparedness personnel and elected officials. I encourage pastors, as much as possible, to post hours that their churches will be open for private prayer with our Eucharistic Lord present in the tabernacle. At no time should there be more than 50 people gathered in the church. Do not come to any of the above if you are sick, if you have been exposed to the coronavirus, if you suspect you have been exposed or if you have been advised by a doctor not to go out in public or attend public gatherings.

Marriage Minute March 22, 2020 “I can See!”

This weekend’s readings are about seeing clearly. While few people experience physical healing like the blind man in the Gospel, many of us can recall times when God has allowed us to see a situation from a new perspective—with equally miraculous results. If you and your spouse keep running up against the same conflict or difficulty, perhaps you are in need of a new perspective. Pray specifically for God to “open your eyes” to

a new way of seeing your spouse and his or her perspective.

Seek counsel from a couple whose marriage you respect who may have traveled through similar difficult circumstances in the past.

Gain new insights and skills from a marriage enrichment such as “Living in Love” or “Worldwide Marriage Encounter.” Other practi-cal marriage tips are on our website. Please visit www.JoyfulMarriageProject.com.

Suggestions from Father Mark Mertes, Pastor... Now that we have given up all sports, social and normal activities, here are some Lenten ideas on how we can Pray, Fast and Give Alms: Make a Holy HOUR (my holy hours are often 35

minutes….) Help out with the parish phone tree (call the of-

fice for more info) Finish your taxes (honestly). Clean out the basement. Clean out the garage. Rake your leaves. Organize some files. Give the carry-out person a large tip. Dust off that musical instrument and play it. Write a snail mail letter. Paint or draw a picture. Pray the rosary as a family. One resource is

dailyrosary.net. Call each member of your family, regularly. Connect with a cousin. Plant a garden. Prepare flower beds. Notice that spring is “springing”! Try out the free Magnificat on-line resource. Watch a movie on FORMED with your children.

(Go to www.formed.org and click on “I belong to a parish,” and follow directions.)

Update your End-of-Life plan. (yes, really!) Bake something! You probably already have

ingredients or learn to bake! Read a book, a biography of a saint or novel. Register on Parish soft for online giving. In-

structions are forthcoming. Remember the parish and mail in your offering.

¡Hornear algo! Probablemente ya tiene los in-

gredientes en su casa. O aprende a hornear. Lee un libro. Lea una biografía o aprenda de

un santo. Lea una novela.
