PARDON THE INTERRUPTION

On Wednesday, meteorologists in the region were cautiously sharing models forecasting up to 22inches of snow for the Triad with a conservative estimate of 9". School-aged children everywhere werebursting with delightful anticipation of what fun might come. When I measured out the possibility for mydaughter with a mark just below her thigh, her jaw dropping look was priceless. "Are you kidding me?",she seemed to say without using words.

By Friday evening, after a day full of ice, we had managed about two inches. Disappointment wasan understatement. But, we weren't the only ones. A number of our youth had plans to head for Resurrec-tion 2016 in Pigeon Forge this weekend but instead found themselves stuck at home for 4 days. Onlyabout half of the 10,000 registered for the youth retreat actually made it.

For some who started off a new year with the best of intentions, the reality of disappointment ordisillusionment begins to sink in after only a month. Resolutions are out the window and fruits of anintentional prayer vigil are now forgotten. Some disappointment runs deeper. Like a friend who just heardthey are no longer in remission.

The Bible has its share of scenes with diminished expectations. In anguish, Naaman laments,"I thought for sure that for me he would come out. "Mary pleads with frustrated grief at Jesus' feet, "Lord,if you had been here my brother would not have died." There seems to be no shortage of disappointmentin our lives. What is scarce is patience... and maybe an imaginative attitude.

In my own life, I can remember my growing frustration and concern with my son's vocabulary at 17months. By this age, his sister was uttering complete sentences while Naaman is still grunting andpointing. Of course, there is so much more to this. For example, studies suggest girls develop as muchas three years faster than boys. They have more synapses and tend to use both sides of their brain. Awoman's vocabulary averages 25,000 words a day compared to the male average of 12,000. As my wifewould quip with me, "If you want to be disappointed leave a man in charge."

Kidding aside, while some found disappointment this weekend, I learned more about patience. Foreverything there is a season. For whatever reason, Naaman began to surprise us with all new words thisweekend: nine, bubbles, uno, me, "maminable" - for abominable. If I had been in TN, I would have missedthe joy - and relief - of seeing his vocabulary grow overnight.

Even within the Church, we can find ourselves easily disappointed. There are likely times recentlyyou may have looked around or thought to yourself, "are we just moving backwards?" The reality in life iswe often do need to move in reverse before we can ever go forward. If you ever wonder why life seems tobe in reverse for you, it may be because you are growing. You may be experiencing transformation.

Theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer once wrote, "We must be ready to allow ourselves to be interruptedby God." Journeying with Christ is always an adventure. Sometimes disappointment is a tool in ourtransformation. I hope together we'll find the patience through Lent to be interrupted by God.

Lent Worship Series: The WayLong before the name Christian was given, the designation given those who followed Jesus and his teachings was followers of,

"The Way." Lent is a season of preparation for celebrating Easter. Historically, Lent began as a period of fasting and preparation forbaptism by converts and later became a time for penance by all Christians. It's our journey towardbecoming a follower of The Way and a season of growing in discipleship.

One of the ancient images of the church for this journey is pilgrimage. Pilgrimage is an especially long journey made to asacred place as an act of religious devotion. For centuries after Christ's death, pilgrims would journey to the Holy Land to walk literallyand spiritually in the footsteps of Jesus. The Camino de Santiago, or The Way of St. James, ranks as another of the most popularpilgrimages in the Christian tradition. It is the name for one of the many routes that flow from France to the shrine of St. James in theCathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Northwest Spain. As early as the 9th Century, pilgrims have taken this journey as spiritual pathtoward wholeness, cleansing, and awakening.

Lent is a time for reflection, soul-searching and taking stock of our lives. For thousands of years, religious people have madejourneys of the heart as a way of gaining perspective and insight. We too will use the imagery and stories of pilgrimage and the Caminoto journey together during Lent. Inspired by passages in the scriptures that talk about the journeys, roads, and pathways of life, alongwith the modern film, "The Way", we will make our "way" together through this poignant season and inspire one another to live the lifewe"ve been given to the fullest.

Passages in the scripturesinspire journeys, roads, andpathways of life.

La Cruz de Farro (the iron cross)is a popular stop along the Caminode Santiago. Pilgrims leave a sym-bol or object from home of some-thing they need to leave behindbefore completing their journey.

Ash WednesdaySometimes things happen in our lives that cause us to be awakened to a new perspective and we begin to

reassess the life road we are following and directions we are going. Ash Wednesday is a time in the church where wetalk of “repentance” which literally means to turn around and head in a new direction. This night, we began ourLenten journey with a movie viewing of "The Way" (2010) followed by the opportunity to receive ashes in the sign ofa cross on our foreheads.

PRAYERO God, the Great Sender, you sent Jesus to the world to take us out of darkness into light, to take us outof death into life. By raising him from his death on the cross, you have given Jesus all authority in heavenand on earth. ‘ Therefore,’ he said to his disciples on the mountain in Galilee, ‘ Go.’ He sends us. Go. Hesends his disciples, then and now, to go out into the world to make more disciples for the world’ stransformation into your kingdom. Go. We hear and we accept his command with gladness. Go. We will.Prepare our leaders well, Lord, for General Conference. Envelop them with your Spirit and fill them withhumility and love. Guide them, particularly the Council of Bishops, as they discern your will for your Churchand as they lead us toward a future that you have prepared for us. Put it in the forefront of their minds andhearts, so that nothing but your will may be done before, during, and after the great gathering of yourpeople. May the General Conference 2016 be the faithful witness to your reign on earth. In Jesus’ namewe pray. Amen.
