    INTRODUCTION

This document is intended to familiarize the candidates with the hiring process and the

entrance examfor the position of maintenance technician at the CBC.

This process requires that the candidates meet the qualification prerequisites identified in

the job posting. A copy of the job spec is available from CBCs Human Resources

department. In addition to these requirements the candidate must:

Have a high school diploma plus two years of technical school or the equivalentexperience as recognized by the CBC and

Write and pass an entrance exam designed to confirm their technical knowledgeas it relates to the job of a maintenance technician. They may also have to write

and pass a practical exam if stipulated in the job posting.

After having met these conditions and following a review of their resume, the candidate

may be invited to participate in a job interview. The interview will also give anopportunity to the candidate to ask questions relating to the prospective position.

    THE ENTRANCE EXAM

The entrance knowledge exam contains 50 multiple-choice questions that are closely tiedto the published job specs. The required pass-mark is 60%. The exam duration is 3.5

    hours.

A typical exam might comprise exam questions distributed among the knowledge areas

    as follows:

Application of Ohms law 5 questions

Circuit analysisDiscrete components 10 questions Circuit analysisIntegrated circuits 10 questions Power supplies 5 questions Measurement techniques 5 questions Digital logic circuits 5 questions Computers 10 questions

    Total: 50 questions

    Part 2: Specialty exam

To gain some appreciation of a candidates work experience, 30 supplementary questionsare included in the test. These deal with work specialties in 3 main areas:

Audio 10 questions Television 10 questions Transmitters 10 questionsTotal: 30 questions

Normally these specialty questions do not count towards the final mark. However, ininstances where the candidate fails but gets more than 52% on the general knowledge

exam then, at the discretion of the manager, the candidates score on their related

specialty questions (Audio, TV or Transmitters) can be included. If the combined mark(general knowledge & specialty) is 60% or greater then the candidate will be given a

    pass.

The exam will be conducted online at a CBC location. A computer and a scientificcalculator will be provided at that time. The candidate will be allowed to bring one letter-

sized sheet of paper containing whatever notes and/or formulae he or she chooses. This

paper will be submitted along with the completed exam.

How can you prepare for the exam?

To give some familiarity with the type of questions used, we have provided one samplequestion from each of the categories. These questions are found in the appendix. The

answer to each of the questions can be found at the end of the appendix

The candidate may wish to review some or all of the material that he/she can expect to

find in the exam. Many reference books are available in libraries and book stores that

cover the required material. The following references will provide a good starting point.
