RP 15TL4 – Care and use of fiberglass

7.2.3 Threaded Joints b. Brush dirty threads with a clean wire brush

• Suggest: soft brush, care not to damage threads 7.3 Pressure Testing (Field)

7.3.4 pressure testing should not exceed manufacturer’s recommendation – not a standardrecommendation – not a standard

Suggest a standard for field pressure testing – address directly within the specifications (15LR and 15HR)

• 15HR static design: Field test pressure = 1.25 x maximum system design pressure. Field test pressure shall not exceed 1.25 x API 15HR Standard Pressure Rating. (ref: ASME B31.4 - 437.4.3 Leak Testing for hydrocarbon lines at 1.25 x )

• 15LR cyclic design: 1.5 x Cyclic pressure rating per API 15LR• 15LR static design: 1.25 x static pressure rating

Discussion: Yield stress - Threshold stress – ISO agreement, relation of field/factory test, option to increase time but not pressure, Axial stress in installed conditions.

Warn User to confirm by stress analysis in critical applications10

15HR – High pressure pipe

Comments from Petroplastic 7.4.2 DSC tests, in accordance with Appendix C, shall also be conducted on

other components than fittings as Flanges, coupling, adapters, reducers, at a frequency of one per 100 units of type, irrespective of size or pressure rating. Suggestion: Include all components at a minimum frequency of 1%. Believe this was

the intent but worded poorly in 15HR as flanges are defined separately from fittings the intent but worded poorly in 15HR as flanges are defined separately from fittings etc..

5.4.1 Regression testing: Early decades (10 to 200 hours) on the re-qualification tests for Pipe and Prime Connection (as well as for fittings) should be eliminated and maintain only the 1000 hours survival testing or propose a survival test with two sets of level of pressures, one from 1000 to 2000 hours for 3 samples and other level for 3 samples that only need to survive more than 3000 hours Suggestion: To change the failure time frames for regression re-qualification to longer

periods. More on this later.14

15HR - Comments from Petroplastic

5.4.1 Changes to the wall thickness of the liner qualified on regression testing should be also considered for re qualification as per ASTM D2992 section 12. Suggestion: specifically call out Liner thickness changes in appendix A to require

requalification, simply reference ASTM D2992 in addition to APPA. App A to be reviewed for regression comparison.

5.4.2 Re qualification Only for fittings (Tees, 90º and 45º elbows), which 5.4.2 Re qualification Only for fittings (Tees, 90º and 45º elbows), which were qualified by 5.1.2, changes as outlined in Appendix A.1 – A.4, and portions of A.9 are similarly stated in ASTM D2992 12.1. These changes may require Regression testing re qualification to confirm acceptance.

Changes to A.5 – A.8 however are not related to API 15HR pipe regression and should not be re-qualified by the same procedure.

Propose alternate short term test to approve changes not related to regression testing.

15HR - Comments from Petroplastic

5.1.1 Pipe and prime connection Early decades (10 to 1000 hours) on the qualification tests for Pipe and Prime

Connection (as well as for fittings) should be eliminated and consider the following:

Suggestion: The number of samples and distribution of failure points Suggestion: The number of samples and distribution of failure points shall be as follows:

1000-6000 hours at least 4 – eliminates less than 1000 hrs 6000-10000 hours at least 4 Beyond 10000 hours at least 5 – currently only 1 required* Total at least 18

Page 17: Group A - Documents consideredmycommittees.api.org/standards/ecs/sc15/Meeting... · Suggest: Review of ASTM D5685 “168 hours test durations or 252,000 cycles” for replacement

15HR - Comments from Petroplastic

Regression testing times continued For fittings the number of samples and distribution of failure points

shall be as follows:

 1000-2000 hours at least 3 > 3000 hours at least 3 > 3000 hours at least 3

Justification: As the qualification testing is determined to design the wall thickness of

the tube body and not the joint, the early decades nothing add to the behavior of the tube body at long term therefore the early decades should be eliminated from the requirements of the test and propose that the regression testing to be done in the future should be done for more than 10000 hours as stated in ASTM D2992.

Page 18: Group A - Documents consideredmycommittees.api.org/standards/ecs/sc15/Meeting... · Suggest: Review of ASTM D5685 “168 hours test durations or 252,000 cycles” for replacement

15HR - Comments from Petroplastic

Justification of regression time changes continued: Early decades implies a mechanical failure mode other than those

one intended to analyze in the regression testing. Meanwhile the behavior at long term correlates more to degradation related to chemical attack and static fatigue, both of them being of interest to determine the long term design basis.determine the long term design basis.

Comment: The stress required to fail all samples up to and exceeding 10,000 hours per ASTM D2992 time frames are at levels exceeding the elastic limitations of the pipe (incorporates degrees of mechanical failure modes in all samples not just < 1000 hours). We are likely testing damaged pipe throughout the procedure. An alternate test method incorporating a reasonable aging stress may be more appropriate.

15HR – NOV FGS comments

The subject of Regression testing and anomolies requires the most discussion, and likely produces long debates, FGS has similar concerns as Petroplastic and hope to arrive at some solutions in the SC15.

Primary issues involve mixing of failure modes during regression testing, testing materials beyond the elastic regression testing, testing materials beyond the elastic limitations, and the length of time and expense to complete 10,000 hours of testing while potential inherent flaws exist in the test program.

Move to table ASTM D2992 Regression discussions until smaller less controversial issues are discussed – Second?

5.4 Requalification (regression testing) 15HR Appendix A: Reference to changes:

Glass, resin, curing agent, liner, manufacturing process * - OK Adhesive, thread compound, sealing compound – Joint not related to pipe

regression testing - Agreement with Petroplastic (irrelevant to pipe regression)

5.1.1 Pipe and prime connections - 5.1.1 Pipe and prime connections - Initial qualification Requires “Joints” only after 6000 hours test duration *

ASTM D2992 (1991 and 2006) –requalification 12.1 Changes in material, manufacture process, construction, liner thickness Require 10-200 and > 1000 hrs to reconfirm associated changes

Attempt at one size fits all – not sufficient attent ion to detail or ext references Neither ASTM nor API reference “ factory location ” as requirement for

“reconfirmation” Suggest: API reference reconfirmation requirements per ASTM D2992. Additional

aspects in Appendix A may require confirmation test ing by manufacturer but require relevant comparison testing. May consider leaving this to the manufacturer as it becomes complex to standardize.

15HR – joint related re-confirmationAppendix A5-A8

i.e. O-rings, Joint sealant, material changes in thread compounds, reinforcement changes, adhesives, etc.

Suggest survival testing: (2) samples containing the proposed changes for confirmation.confirmation.

Option 1 Comprehensive (intent same as pipe): Manufacturer shall complete a regression line per ASTM D2992 At the API standard temperature or higher if so rated for each of the specific joint designs manufactured (Consider a modified version as per API 15HR 5.1.2). Complete a reconfirmation test per section 12 of ASTM D2992 for any changes proposed for this joint. Results of Joint regression will not resemble pipe regression. Joint should be re-confirmed against Joint qualification tests. For variables not related to regression behavior, Failure cannot be mandated, only survival. i.e. durometer change in elastomers, or sealant changes, etc. Surviving is all that can be required.

15HR – joint related re-confirmation

Alternate: Joint change re-confirmation test shall consist of: The highest pressure rated and largest diameter for which this Joint change

is being proposed. Test temperature shall be minimum 150F (API15HR standard) or higher

temperature if so qualified and rated by the manufacturer. Consider joint changes acceptable If the (2) test samples can survive 100

hours at (2 x the maximum API 15HR Standard pressure rating at standard hours at (2 x the maximum API 15HR Standard pressure rating at standard temperature or higher)

Note: multiple temperatures, pressures, and sizes may be required to confirm all potential components. i.e. A 2000psi 8” tested to 200F should qualify all diameters less than 8” and less than 200F, although does not necessarily qualify a 4” at 3000 psi.

15HR- Appendix A.9

A.9 Manufacturing4 - Suggestions in Blue: Cure temperature and time schedule – A dramatic increase in cure rate

may require re-confirmation. Temperature, should be removed, ambient oven temp, internal steam, as related to mass being cured. Simply too many variables to standardize “one size for all”.

Winding angle - +/- 5 degrees from qualified samples Winding angle -Stacking sequence - ??, how about layer thickness > 1.2 x qualified

Percent reinforcement in each direction - back to wind angle

Glass transition temperature as determined in Appendix C Tg less than qualified minimum or greater than 1.2 x qualified maximum

Thread dimensions as specified in Section 5.3 – Joints should not be mixed with pipe regression. i.e. 6K hrs, 1000hrs.

4 - may be different for each size and rating. Translated: “probably should not be included as requiring re-confirmation, we’re tired and need a drink”.

5.3.4 Threads and gauging practiceGage requirements for API Round threads…

If manufactured with API “standard threads” – The Manufacturer must have Master gages or access to them. If “AC – alternate or non standard joints” there are NO “AC – alternate or non standard joints” there are NO masters so the same cannot be a requirement.

Suggest to follow international QA standards – API threads must be dimensioned by gauges traceable to “an international standard” this may be done by reference to gages calibrated and traceable to “API Master gages”. “Traceable to” meets ISO 9001 and API Q1 requirements.

Justification: Only Minor differences in Pressure calculation results Standardizes methods with ASTM and ISO Few API standard Joints (API 8rd) can withstand

Regression test pressures when a pipe of OD/t = 10 is used Regression test pressures when a pipe of OD/t = 10 is used as the base, this incorporates joint failures with pipe failures in the regression testing.

Joints have a flatter regression slope than 55 degree pipe Suggest Eq 2 as the single API 15HR pressure equation to simplify

and standardize, if not, replace Eq 1 “R’s” with “D’s” – I hate dividing by 2 for no reason.
