Wind back the clock to October 2007, when we joined together some of the fi nest pike angling brains in Europe, mixed them up with perch and zander professionals, threw them all into a room with our very own CAD engineering and tooling team and waited. You would have witnessed the conceptual birth of our Prowla range consisting of rods, luggage, tools, and terminal tackle. From the lakes, fens and drains of the UK, to mainland European rivers and inland seas, we have liaised with forward thinking consultants and taken every eff ort to bring you the best in fi shing tackle design.

Of course we don’t profess to know everything there is to know about predator fi shing - it’s diffi cult to reinvent the wheel. But we know we’ve done a very good job. Just take a look at our paternoster boom development, our advances in dead bait presentation techniques, or trace making ideas and bait storage solutions, all of which mean you will fi sh more eff ectively and put more fi sh safely on the bank.

PLATINUM PREDATOR RODSMost rod companies have the odd predator blank (or two) tagged onto their ranges, but in many cases this seems more like a token gesture! Here at Greys we are serious about rods, covering all aspects and angles, which is why we are so highly regarded for our already hugely popular specimen, general coarse and sea rods.

When we decided to focus our attention on predator rods, we applied the same high intensity research and development we previously put into our established rod brands. That’s why new Prowla predator rods are very special.

We researched far and wide, including on the Continent and in Ireland, looking at all the specialist requirements and refi nements modern predator anglers now expect. This included general bait and boat fi shing, jerkbait and drop shot demands, also vertical jigging - along with lure and spinning applications. We looked, listened, learnt and developed meticulously over a long period, which is why our new Prowla rods off er something for all serious pike, perch and zander anglers. Whether casting from the shore or fi shing from a boat, there is a rod to cover every eventuality. This also applies to venues far and wide. There are rods in this extensive range that cover everything from local park lakes to vast Irish loughs and Scottish Lochs, also deep reservoirs to shallow drains.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENTIn house design, development and testing is something we really pride ourselves on here at Greys. We have an exclusive group of top class anglers that make up our development team, to ensure all new products are given a series of comprehensive tests before they are launched. Here’s how pike expert and Greys consultant John Horsey faired on a Prowla development testing session with television and radio star Chris Tarrant last February...

Chris was on a two day guided boat pike session at Chew Valley Lake, Somerset with fi shing partner Martin Founds, of Anglers’ World Holidays. Both men were being guided by Hardy & Greys Ltd Consultant and England Fly Fishing Team Captain John Horsey, for the fi rst two days of the annual sell-out Chew Valley Pike Trials.

Chris said, “It was easily the coldest day that I’ve ever fi shed on. The water temperature was only 3 degrees and we didn’t expect any runs at all. Around lunchtime we had half a dozen pike before I caught my personal best 30lb 2oz pike on fl oat-fi shed smelt deadbait. I was absolutely thrilled as my previous best was 29lb. The 12’ 3lb Greys Prowla Platinum Bait Rod I was using is light to handle, casts beautifully and still had masses of power in reserve when I was playing my fi sh in deep water under a boat. What a rod and what a day!”

Martin also had a pike on his Greys Prowla Platinum 10’ 6” Boat Rod weighing 19lb 8oz and John joined in the action too when he caught a personal best perch weighing 4lb 6oz on a Greys 6’ Prowla Platinum Jerkbait Rod.

John Horsey added, “Over the years I have had great days at Chew on the pike, but those two days were the best so far. We have boated bigger pike, but never in such adverse conditions. For Chris to get his personal best pike in the middle of a snow storm, that left most of our tackle completely covered, was absolutely brilliant! To think we caught all our fi sh using the latest Prowla range of predator rods was fantastic. All the rods performed incredibly well – at times we had solid ice in the rod rings, but still they delivered the goods – cast after cast.”

KEY ROD FEATURES

The exclusive Greys D-Tecta handle is a major advancement in bite detection when jigging and drop shotting. The special reel seat enables you to trap your line directly against the blank enhancing the feel you get from taking fi sh. This feature can be found on Drop Shot and Vertical Jigging models.

GUIDES All Prowla Platinum rods feature SiC braid safe guides that have been placed to minimise their eff ect on the rod’s action.The tip guides are rolled underslung SiC models which prevent braid from rubbing on the outer metal frame and help to avoid wrap-arounds.

BLANKS All Prowla Platinum rod blanks are produced from blends of the very best high modulus carbon. These blends are adjusted to produce the correct performance characteristics for the intended use of the rod.

REEL SEATS Reel seats on the Prowla Platimum range vary according to the rod’s intended use. You will see that in some instances we have used Fuji reel seats and in other instances have used our own custom-designed Greys option.

HANDLESHandle lengths and profi les vary depending on use. Some models have adjustable balance handles. All handles use quality cork and have a lazer etched aluminium butt cap for protection.

BAITThe Platinum Bait range has a high specifi cation carbon blank fi tted with SIC guides and a slim cork handle with a fl ared Duplon butt to avoid the rod sliding forward out of the back rest. The reel seat will accommodate big pit reels. A progressive/through action provides plenty of power for casting baits and for setting hooks eff ectively, but will absorb close range lunges. As with all 2 piece rods in the Prowla range it folds exactly in half, ring to ring, and the Bait range is fi tted with a carbon run clip.

This Platinum 11ft rod is the lightest in the range. Its through action and 2.25lb test curve makes it a perfect short to medium range pike or zander rod, ideal for trotting on a river or lobbing a bait off a reservoir dam wall. It has the power to cast a sardine and 2oz lead 40 metres with ease, and makes the hooking and playing of a pike good fun and effi cient.

The 12ft 3lb tc is the ultimate versatile pike rod. The action provides plenty of power for casting medium to long range, and for setting hooks, but has a fantastic playing action that increases confi dence. This rod has everything a pike angler could want and more! It’s a superb bank rod for all bait methods.

If you fi sh at distance or need raw power then the 12’ 3.5lb is for you. It’s an incredible tool for drifter and distance fi shing, allowing you to set hooks at 200 metres. It balances well with big pit reels and can easily handle 30 to 50lb braid. This rod is capable of launching a good sized mackerel and a 3oz lead a long distance! JERK BAITPlatinum Jerk is a versatile range of three rods that cover a broad range of jerkbait fi shing. All are built on high modulus blanks with sensitive tips to give life to your lures, without compromising on strength and possess enough power to let you handle bigger predators. The extra SIC braid safe guides and new guide spacing keep braid away from the blank when playing a fi sh and improve casting performance.

Platinum Jerk Light is ideal for casting lures up to 50g. SPECIMEN QUIVERThe Prowla Specimen Quiver has been designed with simple, yet eff ective, butt separators allowing you to house each made-up rod independently. The top of the quiver has larger than normal retaining straps to hold up to 2 and 3 rods respectively, allowing you to quickly remove any you wish to leave at home if venturing out for a shorter, less intensive session. This is to avoid the need for fi ddling about with 5 individual straps during cold weather.

The Prowla Trace Tube is made from a fabric coated outer container with a zipped top. Inside is a tough moulded plastic rig tidy with the added feature of a central storage cavity to hold baiting needles and a Prowla Flavour and Pop Up Kit (page 24). The rig tidy is injection moulded from hardened GFN material, much stronger than other ABS plastics. This added strength prevents the swivel holding pins from snapping during general use. Black EVA foam provides a secure fi xing point for all hooks.

SUPA SIGHT DARTThis Supa Sight Dart is ultra buoyant and has visibility where you need it – just above the water. It can be seen at long range even in rough and wild water. Thread your main line through the eye of the swivel, which prevents line twist if the fl oat spins when it’s windy, and set your required fi shing depth using a sliding stop knot and bead. Supa Sight Darts are available in 3 sizes each of which can be perfectly balanced with one of Prowla’s quick change In-Line Sinkers (page 20).

The Suspenda Sub Float fi shed with a Prowla Paternoster Boom (page 21) is the perfect solution for presenting natural baits. Simply thread the fl oat onto your main line and push the rubber tube over the top swivel of the paternoster boom uptrace. Set the fi shing depth by adjusting the length of the weak nylon lead link. Alternatively you can allow the fl oat to slide freely on your main line, and set fi shing the depth using a stop knot and bead. Available in 3 sizes these fl oats will suspend all sizes of live and dead baits and are moulded from clear plastic to be unseen by predators.

DEAD BAIT POP-UP FLOATUnlike conventional fl oater sticks which are made from balsa wood and need to be forced into your dead bait, Prowla Dead Bait Pop-Up Floats feature a threaded point enabling you to easily screw them into thawed or even semi-frozen baits, allowing you to change presentation and critically balance your dead baits. They must be attached to your trace with wire to avoid loss (see diagram), and are available in small or medium sizes to work with baits up to 3oz and 6oz respectively. Try leaving the red eyelet sticking out of the bait to act as a visual striking point for predators.

BAIT SLIDER TROLL GRIP FLOATThe Prowla Troll Grip fl oat has been designed to allow you to fi sh baits in fast fl owing rivers or behind a boat. The bent inner tube grips your line and prevents the fl oat from being pushed towards the trace by the current if you hold back when ‘trotting’ a swim. This would cause your bait to be raised upwards from the set fi shing depth and is undesirable. Simply thread onto your main line and set the required depth with a sliding stop knot. Prowla Anti-Tangle Tube Sinkers can be fi shed with a fl oat rig or on a straight ledger. Simply thread your main line through the tube, tie on your trace and pull the trace swivel into the rubber tube. This gives a semi-fi xed weight and helps to prevent overwraps and tangles when fi shing in deep water. The tube sinker off ers a quick-change ability working in exactly the same manner as Prowla Quick Change In-Line Sinkers. Simply pop open the weight stem, slide the lead off your line, replace with the desired size, and click the stem parts back together.

These in-line sinkers allow you to swap weights without the need for breaking your line. There are 4 diff erent weight sets available, to balance all Prowla fl oats, each coming fi tted with easy release quick-change stems. Also included are soft rubber adaptors allowing you to push the sinker onto a swivel giving a semi-fi xed presentation. The Prowla 360 Rotary Paternoster Boom is simply a revolution in predator fi shing! It allows you to fi sh natural baits minimizing those annoying tangles that so often occur when fi shing paternoster rigs.

Prowla’s Fledger & Boom gives you the smoothest free-running predator rig on the market! The buoyant Fledger stem lifts your main line above debris and weed and prevents the rig from sinking into silted or muddy bottoms, whilst th e stiff boom tubing helps to avoid tangles and wrap-arounds. Remove the packaging and pull the 100lb test uptrace mono through the vertical boom so the bottom swivel sits inside the rubber sleeve. Attach a weak nylon lead link to this swivel and your main line to the top after threading on your fl oat.

Used with a Prowla Suspenda Sub Float (top right) fi xed to the top swivel of the uptrace mono, the rig can be fi shed at any depth by adjusting the length of the weak nylon lead link. PATERNOSTER TRACEThis Prowla Supa Paternoster Trace is made up using high quality round bend Prowla Carbon Trebles mounted on 7 strand 30lb stainless steel wire. The top crimp cover slides onto a safety cross-lok link, which allows the trace greater movement and massively improves bait presentation, especially when fi shed in conjunction with a Prowla 360 Rotary Paternoster Boom (page21).

Prowla Supa Snap Tackle is made up using high quality round bend Prowla Carbon Trebles mounted on 7 strand 30lb stainless steel wire. The top Prowla crimp cover has a triple stepped internal bore, designed to slide over the barrel of a round/diamond eye swivel creating a mini-boom eff ect. This massively aids presentation, minimises tangles, and prevents weed and debris from attaching itself to the trace.

The bottom crimp cover sits on the eye of the hook allowing movement to aid hooking. A Prowla treble sleeve is used on the top hook to keep everything neat and tidy, and the bait fl ags act as a visual strike target for big predators, whilst indicating which points are barbed and should be removed fi rst during unhooking. Gravel brown in colour and available in a low diameter 30lb breaking strain, the wire is easily twisted or crimped when making your own traces. It is extremely durable and copes perfectly with all aspects of predator fi shing. The unique Greys wire dispenser allows you to wind any surplus back on to the spool leaving the end protruding ready for next use.

It comes in a neutral gravel brown colour, ideal for blending in with underwater environments, and has a very low diameter. BAIT FLAGSProwla Bait Flags come in small or large sizes at 22mm & 35mm with 30 fl ags per box. They are moulded from soft and supple TPU rubber so as not to impede hooking potential. The fl ag should be mounted on the barbed point of a treble and slid down onto the bend. Bait fl ags are used primarily to give a visual striking point to a predator, but also to enable you to see which hook point is barbed – this should be the fi rst removed when unhooking your fi sh. They can also be used to hold a bait in place by using 2 fl ags, the second being slid onto the barbed point after the bait has been mounted.
