Letter of Interest

To whom it may concern, I am writing in regard to the Recreation Services Manager position you are currently hiring for. As I read about this opportunity it became apparent to me that my strengths and experience make me an exceptional candidate for this position. As you will see in my résumé, I have worked in community service and enrichment positions throughout Napa and Sonoma counties for over ten years. Through these positions I have facilitated youth development, community service, and education through an atmosphere of positive leadership and understanding.

I am passionately committed to helping those in need by creating opportunities for individuals and groups to realize and apply their potential. This commitment has been applied throughout my career with Boys & Girls Clubs by offering life altering programs within the Clubhouse and incorporating community members and groups as partners in this effort. I came to Calistoga in 2010 with that same goal in mind and, with the help of key staff, developed what has been described by Julie McClure of the Napa Valley Office of Education (NCOE) as “the best after-school program in Napa Valley”. In my tenure with Boys & Girls Clubs St. Helena and Calistoga (BGCSHC) I have been taken on a broad range of responsibilities that include programming, project management, resource development, budgeting, marketing, staff & youth development, and community outreach; moreover, these experiences as a whole have fortified me with an advanced capacity for inspiring, engaging, and impacting youth, the community, and the professionals I work with..

I deeply value positive and engaging atmospheres as a means for personal and professional growth and actively look for and create organizations compatible with these goals and practices. If you are looking for a dynamic, creative, and enthusiastic element to compliment your organization then I would be an asset to that effort.

Most Respectfully Yours,Greg Bouillerce

Program Leadership and Staff Development Staff Leadership

The Boys & Girls Club is not just an organization that I have worked for; it has been a cause I have supported; and although many of the organizations I have worked with have toyed with more corporate approaches to community development, I have kept that guiding principal at heart. When I arrived in Calistoga in September of 2010, I invested a large amount of time in building a program where investment started with the members, continued with its volunteers and staff, and of course into its administration as well. I threw out our antiquated interview process and dramatically changed how we approached finding and retaining the right staff. I injected fun and passion into this process in order to rephrase social work as a cause over just another job; the core idea being that when people work for a cause they incorporate themselves so wholly into its success that they become as personally connected and impacted by the program as those we serve. By creating an atmosphere conducive to this principal I have found

and retained great people, which has resulted in a deep and impactful program. That’s what each club should be striving to do; create a place where everyone leaves better for the experience.

Program DevelopmentI believe that at its heart the community enrichment is about creating a positive place that has a lasting impression on all involved. As former Boys & Girls Club of America President Roxanne Splinet so aptly put it “We are planting the seeds of trees whose shade we may never sit in;” and as such the onus falls on us then to ensure that we not only create opportunities for a lasting impression but that we effectively use those moments as vehicles for impact and personal development.

Staff HiringI developed a three pronged approach to staff recruitment and retention.

IdentificationWe began by positing ads on craigslist, social media, and local college campuses. The postings themselves were member driven in that members had a say in the recommended qualifications, i.e. juggling skills, knowledge of video games, and/or a love of crazy hats). This set the tone for our organization as a fun place to work and attracted applicants who were interested in the inherent creativity of this experience. Upon their interview, potential staff members were given a written and then an oral interview. Intermixed with typical questions were requests to sing, to consider strange situations, and opportunities to demonstrate artistic or creative abilities. The result of this experience has been unwaveringly positive and has changed our staff retention rate dramatically. We are no longer just attracting people who think the Club might be a fun job, but people who actively cultivate and contribute to the experience as well.

InclusionIn administrating a program we often talk about the best ways to motivate people and I have often found that there is no substitute for making them a part of the process. Again, when considering causes, people are more motivated when they are personally invested. Creating opportunities for staff to be heard, to take part in planning, and to recognize the efforts of others fosters an inclusive environment that promotes both program development and self-motivation. As an administrator, I believe strongly in being present and creating opportunities for communication and advancement.

InvestmentDuring my time with the Wine Country Professional Association (WCPA) I was responsible for organizing program level trainings for staff groups of five to fifty from across Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino Counties.

In the course of my work with the Club I have offered training on the following topics:Training

Community Partnerships

Calistoga Chamber of Commerce (CCC)My first year at Calistoga in 2010 was intensely focused on program development, but as the program became more organized and self-driven I began branching out to the community to pave the way for a capital campaign in 2014. I registered our organization with the Calistoga Chamber of Commerce, regularly attended meetings and presented the chamber and its members with opportunities to get involved. Through the Chamber of Commerce I befriend Calistoga’s Mayor, Chris Canning, who has been an incredible proponent of the Club and its mission.

Calistoga Joint Unified School District (CJUSD)I attended and spoke at School Board Meetings and invited school board members and district staff to tour our programs and attend our open house events. I forged strong relationships with the CJUSD Board. Calistoga Elementary School invited me to speak on their behalf as they were interviewed for the California Distinguished School Award.

Napa County Office of Education (NCOE)I manage our relationship and reporting responsibilities with NCOE as of 2012. This included regular participation in Napa County After School Programs (NCASP) Meetings, submitting monthly membership and attendance data, and coordinating regular meetings with NCOE administrators to coordinate local initiatives. The Boys & Girls Club after-school program at Calistoga Elementary school was one of the highest scoring programs in Napa County’s review of state test scores and survey information. The report itself signified that of the 16 after school programs in Napa County over the 2012/2013 school year the Calistoga program served the largest English as a second language population (355 Members) which comprised 82% of its registered membership. The Calistoga program also served the largest population of children who qualified for free and reduced lunch. (351 members) The report indicated that 64% of children who attended the Calistoga after-school program scored Proficient or Above on English Language Arts (ELA) California State Test (CST) for the 2012/2013 school year over a school average of 62% and a county average of 46%. The report also indicated that 81% of children who attended the Calistoga program scored Proficient or Above on MATH CST for the 2012/2013 school year over a school average of 72% and a county average of 60%. The 2014 evaluation of the Calistoga Unit by NCOE was overwhelmingly positive.

English Learners Advisory Council (ELAC)I reached out to Spanish speaking families through ELAC to answer questions about the Club, its programs, and how Spanish speaking parents could support and benefit from club programs.

8

Page 9: Greg's Portfolio

This relationship has broadened and I now frequently visit, meet and create partnership opportunities with Spanish speaking parents and of course ELAC itself.

Local News AgenciesOur Calistoga Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Helena and Calistoga has been featured in over 150 press releases, photo credits, and articles over the past three years. The articles range in content from Childhood Obesity, to Garden Programs, and Boys & Girls Club Week.

In addition to the above mentioned organization I was instrumental in establishing and maintaining partnerships with:

Grant Application and Reporting Experience

Page 10: Greg's Portfolio

Grant Writing- Calistoga Community Enrichment Grant (CCE)I was responsible for applying for and retaining this grant for four years. The City of Calistoga announced this grant in 2010 to award funding toward programs that benefited the Community of Calistoga. I applied for and was awarded the CCE Grant four times and in each case we were awarded funding toward program related goals; Internet Safety in 2011, Calistoga Community Garden 2012, Digital Arts in 2013, and an Xbox Active Games Lab in 2014. I was solely responsible for the application, management, and reporting of this grant.

Grant Reporting- After School Education and Safety (ASES)I’ve overseen four different afterschool programs that were primarily funded through ASES; Roseland Elementary School in 2008, El Verano Elementary School in 2009, Flowery Elementary School in 2009, and Calistoga Elementary School in 2010 to present. Through my experience with these sites I have become very adept at grant reporting and record keeping and have always met or exceeded all ASES grant requirements. My record demonstrates an ability to find a natural and substantial common ground between rigid state academic requirements and Boys & Girls Club’s social recreation philosophy.

Visions Member Tracking System and Google DriveIn my time with Boys & Girls Clubs I’ve become very familiar with data entry and interpretation. I became a recognized authority on the Club’s member tracking system as the primary means of reporting attendance data and accessing member information. I also integrated google drives to broaden the scope of our content and program standards so that this information could be applied toward grant reporting.
