Greening of Campus IT
Moe Tabrizi July 2008
Show of hands…How many departments shut off their PCs at night before they go home?
The Topic “du jour” is Global Warming
This is your chance to help reduce campus CO2 emissions and save money for our campus!
•There is a direct correlation between energy usage and CO2 Emissions/Global Warming
MFT July 2008
Show of hands…How many departments have desktop monitors power managed and enabled to go to sleep mode after 20 min. or less?
• Campus Cost of energy is about
$25 million/year and growing(almost 100% of campus electricity is purchased from Xcel Energy)
• We use 15000 desktops/laptops--- about 4-5% of campus electricity usage (not including associated HVAC Cooling Load and Campus Data Centers)

• As a state entity, we are committed to support Gov. Executive Order to reduce our energy usage by 20% by 2012 against 2006 baseline
MFT July 2008
•Desktop Power Management and energy savings has NONO cost and is a quick solution toward the above mandate
Go to www.colorado.edu/conservation to view thecampus plan in support of the Gov. Executive Order
• Our request is simple
• We want to make sure that every PC monitor is enabled to go to sleep or be power managed after 10 minutes of inactivity
• Secondly, we are encouraging people to turn off their desktops after hours and on weekends
MFT July 2008
• Having monitors shut down is a quick green idea without any cost or negative side effects.
• Network connectivity is maintained, and all your applications stay running.
• LCD monitors come back on almost as quickly as a screensaver.

Campus IT Green Actions
1. Power manage desktop monitors to go to sleep mode after 10 minutes of inactivity.
2. Buy only systems with “energy smart options.” Ask Vendors for more information
3. Encourage turning off desktops/laptops after business hours.
4. Power management of Printers/Consolidation of Printers.
5. We may be able to facilitate exchange of limited number of old CRT monitors with 3-4 years old Flatscreen monitors (less energy usage/ less heat produced in the space). If your interested, please sign up at the Greening IT table outside.
MFT July 2008
• I am encouraging you to go to the IT Greening table and sign a Commitment Card to accomplish the Campus IT Green Action Items within 90 days.
