Introduction to the Rhino Group

From humble beginnings as a plastic recycler more than 30 years ago, the Rhino Group has diversified extensively; initially into the manufacturing of plastic sheeting & films for the construction, packaging and agricultural sectors, as well as irrigation piping into the latter as well, to representing a myriad of international suppliers so as to trade successfully into those same sectors and build sizeable market shares.

The Rhino Group continued to grow through investment into its’ own distribution structure, with own branches in Port Elizabeth, East London, Johannesburg and Cape Town, along with own warehousing capacity, plus then a network of agents throughout South Africa and a number of neighbouring countries. Employee numbers continued to grow over the years, totalling now around 300.

Group strategy has more recently led to investments into renewable energy and water treatment solutions, with Rhino Energy Solutions and Rhino Water Technologies being formed, working closely with leading national specialists in such fields. Rhino AgriVantage was also formed pursuant to enhancing our agricultural presence.

Two pivotal elements of the Rhino Groups’ strategies are:

• Green building solutions [incorporating construction materials, passive design elements, energy demand mitigation & renewable energy supply as well as rainwater harvesting & waste water recycling]. Our historic involvement in the construction sector, including through the distribution of rated insulation material, has ensured understanding of and alignment with the new SANS 10400 XA New Building Regulations.

• ‘Food-Energy-Water’ [agricultural supplies, fertilisers, irrigation – as well as the energy and water solutions as captured in the bullet point above]

Significant synergies exist between the various elements, thereby very often ensuring unique turnkey abilities; in addition, a solutions-centric approach versus product push creates further value.

Examples of some recent or current turnkey projects include:

• King Shaka International Airport [Durban] – initially secured under tender, with European associates, +-R300m project for the design, erection and commissioning of largest greenhouse project in SA, then Rhino secured numerous tenders/projects to attend to all rainwater harvesting and effluent treatment to irrigate the greenhouse production, as well as damlining and other water-related work, plus then one of just a few invited to tender for the solar energy solution at the airport

• A large eco-estate – overall hybrid solar/biomass solution for the entire development, consulting on the electrical backbone to facilitate renewable energy, solar solutions [power, water, under-floor heating] at residential unit level, passive design/energy demand mitigation, rainwater harvesting and all waste water recycling. Agricultural support to such ancillary initiatives at the estate

• Similar holistic solutions for other developments

• Solar park installations, from 1MW to 60MW

Our strategic intent is very much encompassed in the statement ‘Partnering with Professionals’ and as such we would appreciate any opportunity to engage further with you.

Under Floor Heating Solutions

Systems with Radiators Radiators distribute heat by convection currents, which can result in draughts and hot spots. The floor will be the coldest zone of the room, as hot air rises, and the space above your head will be the warmest part of the room. Radiators transfer heat into a room largely by convection from a hot metal surface. Because the surface of the radiator is small, in comparison to the volume of the room, it needs a high heat input and doesn’t spread the heat evenly. Convection currents circulate allergens, dust particles, fumes and germs which are then distributed around the building, contributing to an unhealthy atmosphere.

Underfloor Heating Underfloor heating systems are simple to install, low maintenance and cost-effective to run. The room is heated by radiation, the most natural and comfortable form of heating, creating an even, comfortable environment with no hot or cold draughts. Rooms with high ceilings such as churches, sports halls or industrial units gain even greater benefits. With radiator systems, some of the heat is immediately wasted as it rises to the ceiling. With an underfloor heating system, the heat is concentrated at floor level where it is most needed. In rooms with large areas, underfloor heating is the only way to heat the centre of the floor area effectively.

Floor Surface Temperatures Floor surface temperatures should not exceed certain levels otherwise discomfort and damage to the floor can occur. The maximum recommended temperatures are : occupied areas, 29°C, peripheral areas, 35°C, bathrooms, 33°C. The floor surface temperature will vary according to the heat output requirements of the room or building.

Floor Coverings Floor coverings such as carpet, underlay and timber reduce the floor heat output. Please check with us to confirm suitability. Some floor coverings, especially timber and vinyl floors, have a recommended maximum floor surface or sub floor temperature that they can operate at; if a higher temperature is used it can damage the floor covering. Manufacturers data sheets should be checked to confirm the coverings suitability.

The Natural Way to Stay Cool

The transference of heat energy through radiation is a much more gentle and natural way for the human body to cool

down. Combine this with the even room temperature of a concrete core tempered building and the result is a more

comfortable environment for all occupants, even at slightly increased room temperatures.

Less Infrastructure

A building using concrete core tempering only needs a small

air conditioning system to remove peak heat loads, dehumidity the air (to avoid condensation on cold floors and

ceilings), and to supply fresh air. The main cooling load is covered by the concrete core tempering system, allowing for reduced air exchange rates, air handling units, ducts or fans.

Awadukt Thermo ground-air heat exchanger is providing to be a popular choice for the residential

sector, particularly in combination with a mechanical ventilation heat recovery unit (MVHR). It exploits the

natural temperature of the earth by drawing ventilation air through underground pipes, buried at 1.5m deep. This pre-heats the air in the winter and

pre-cools the air in the summer, offering a simple but effective way of saving energy. For a standard house,

around 40-60m of DN200 pipe is required.

The transfer is much more effeciant by water in comparison to air, with the storage capacity of thermal energy for water a thousand-fold higher per unit of volume than of air

Benefits of Under Floor Heating

Energy Efficiency • Underfloor heating is the most energy

efficient way of transferring heat into a room and can consistently deliver substantial energy savings compared to radiator systems.

• Because underfloor heating systems benefit from the use of lower water temperatures throughout the system (rather than hot water in radiator systems), condensing boilers can generally run at greater efficiency, saving even more energy costs.

• By providing a constant heat, underfloor heating allows occupants to feel more comfortable at a lower temperature.

Interior Design • Out of sight, underfloor heating gives a total

flexible layout, with no radiators to limit interior designs and furniture arrangement.

• Underfloor heating is compatible with most types of floor covering. The interior designer has more freedom to specify most types of floor covering whether it be tiles, wood, laminates or carpets.

• Even though it can’t be seen, underfloor heating adds perceived value to the property.

Health & Safety • Underfloor heating systems eliminate

radiators (which can potentially be a health and safety risk because of their high surface temperatures and sharp edges).

• Moisture levels in floor coverings are reduced, which reduces microbiological growth and the risk of slipping. In carpets it virtually eliminates dust mites.

• As there is no convection driven airflow, and the circulation of bacteria and pollen is reduced, the indoor air quality is cleaner and healthier.
