ead coach Caleb Porter enters his fourth season with the club in 2016 after signing a long-term contract extension on Jan. 27, 2016. Since joining the Timbers in 2013, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active MLS coaches with a record of 41-25-36 (.578), leading the Timbers to their first MLS Cup title in 2015, two Western Conference Championship appearances and double-digit wins in each of his first three seasons.
Over Porter’s first three seasons, the Timbers have lost the fewest games (25) of any MLS team and have compiled regular-season point totals of 57 (2013), 49 (2014) and 53 (2015). And over that span of time, Portland’s combined point total (159) ranks as the fourth most in MLS, behind only the New York Red Bulls (169), Seattle Sounders FC (167) and LA Galaxy (165). Additionally, Portland has reg-istered a league-best 35 shutouts across Porter’s first three sea-sons, while the club’s 14 road wins the last two seasons rank as the most in MLS over that span.
The 2013 MLS Coach of the Year, Porter coached in his 100th game as an MLS coach against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 14, 2015, posting a record of 39-25-36 in those games, which tied San Jose Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear for the fewest losses (25) in MLS history in a coach’s first 100 career games. In addition, his .570 winning percentage during that span ranks fourth among active coaches through their first 100 games, behind the LA Galaxy’s Bruce Arena (62-37-1, .625), Seattle’s Sigi Schmid (52-33-15, .595) and Kinnear (40-25-35, .575).
Ending the 2015 campaign with a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions, the Timbers lifted their first MLS Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over Columbus Crew SC on Dec. 6, 2015. Portland finished the regular season with an MLS-club-record 15 wins, while also tying for the league lead in shutouts (13). On the road, the Timbers finished the 2015 season tied for the most road wins (7) in the league.
During his tenure, the Timbers have qualified for CONCA-CAF Champions League twice (2014-15, 2016-17), finished in the top three in the Western Conference in two of his first three seasons and made their deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the semifinals in 2013.
Porter was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over German power Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS
All-Star Game at Providence Park in Portland. During Porter’s first season with Portland in 2013, the
Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS history, finishing the regular season atop the Western Conference table. In comparison to 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record, 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season and the Timbers led the league with 15 shutouts. The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park and an MLS single-season record 11 home shutouts. In 2014, the Timbers netted a team-record 61 goals while recording the best goal differential (plus-9) of any non-playoff team in MLS history.
Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” license and an NSCAA advanced national diploma, was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (2006-12). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of
the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010.
Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University, winning two national championships with the Hoosiers.
As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. He also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. As a four-time All-Big Ten selection and three-year captain at Indiana, Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles and two College Cup appearances. Porter was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.
Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin (7) and Jake (5), and a daughter, Stella (4).

015 proved to bea whirlwind season for midfielder Diego Valeri as he recovered from a torn ACL he suffered at the end of the 2014 season. He returned to the pitch for Portland and found his form, helping the Timbers lift the MLS Cup trophy behind an MVP per-formance. Valeri chats about being healthy again, MLS Cup MVP honors, his daugh-ter Connie,s excitement about MLS Cup and his love for the guitar and music.

I think she thinks that she won the trophy with me. The night before the game we watched videos together and she was focusing on the game like a player. She wants to be a soccer player. For the Western Conference final she couldn’t go to the game and she was watching the game at home and touching the screen. I think she’s like another player on this team.
“It was a plus for that game, but the most important for me was the trophy, was the team. I was happy about that for me it was good, but I was thinking about the team, and the club and lifting the trophy. You can’t think about you. The game I enjoyed that, but the MVP was a plus for me. I will keep it, it’s nice, but for me the most important was that we won the trophy.”
“It means a lot for me. It’s very important for me because last season I was rehabbing my injury. You know you can’t join the team as you want. This is special for me, I’m enjoying it and working hard for the team. It feels good.”
“I started to play guitar when I got my first injury, my ACL in Argentina. I can’t practice too much at home, but now with Connie we can play a little bit more. It’s a nice hobby for me and I like to spend time with an instrument, with music. I like music so Connie can help me with that too. I like to play rock and Christian music too, but mostly it’s rock ‘n’ roll.”

Introducing Mark P
arsons
ew Thorns FC head coach Mark Parsons comes to Portland with a wealth of coaching experience and a track record of developing
players. He started coaching in his native Great Britain as part of the Chel-sea FC academy with both boys and girls teams. While part of their Center of Excellence, Parsons observed and learned from coaches such as Guus Hiddink, Carlo Ancelotti and Brendan Rodgers. He then went on to coach
the Chelsea Ladies Reserves, win-ning the League Cup, the County Cup and a League title for the first time in history. As an assistant coach with the U16 Girls Academy, Parsons helped lead the team to an Academy Championship in 2007.
As part of the staff that came to the United States with Chelsea FC on some of the Premier League
timbers.comGREEN & WHITE MAGAZINE / 201638
What are your initial thoughts at be-ing named head coach of Thorns FC?
“I think that the first feelings are just proud to come in to be someone that Thorns FC wanted, and the respect for what the Thorns have done over the last three years on and off the field and across the league. I’m very proud to be approached with this opportunity and also realize that I’m sure it’s because I’ve done a successful job. But it’s not just me that has done a successful job. It’s been a team of players and staff, and together we were successful. So I owe a lot of people credit for me being the face of that.
But it’s exciting. I think for me, it’s a really good chance to show the best of me and impact a bigger, more established organization with many strengths. I’ve got loads of excitement to get in, to get established, to get to know as many people as I can in the organization and be set up to succeed from the get-go.”A phrase that comes up often with you is “player development.” You have a track record with Chelsea FC and with the Washington Spirit. What do you think it is you like about that process of getting the most out of your players?
“My passion for my own develop-ment is huge, and it’s the reason I’ve had good success, because I’m pas-
sionate about it. But more importantly, people were willing to open the door and invest in me. At Chelsea there are people that did that for me. So because of my own experience, that’s how I’m passionate.
With players in Washington, I think we’ve shown in two years we have done a great job of getting the best out of individuals. And Crystal Dunn is a good example.
I say this to players all the time, we offer the same to every player. There are players that don’t overachieve, there are players that do. So while we are offering the same support to everyone, the player is the one that is deciding if they’re making the best of this or they’re deciding they’re not. Maybe there are some challenges; maybe they’re going through some stuff. But for me, connecting with players and making sure they know I’m all in, in making sure they perform at their best. I’m invested in them. Even on the bad days they’re going to have me and my support and on the good days they’ll have my support. I think that’s key, connecting with the players and setting targets. Setting targets to keep moving forward and holding people accountable. Sometimes people who are not executing are not doing other things technically, tactically, or executing. Maybe you can’t control that
the ball just bounced this way or the opposition, but we can always control our effort and our attitude and focus. I am so strong on those three things.”What do you see as the keys to get-ting into the club here and starting to put everything into place for 2016?
“Firstly, being fully educated and in line with the vision of the club, the culture of the club. I want to understand the principles of the club on and off the field and understand that with great de-tail. And then from that comes my part, and within those guidelines in regards to building staff and strengthening the roster. Just be incredibly dedicated to intelligent work and making sure that we have the best possible staff. Make sure we have the best possible players that fit what the needs are in this city.”
The first thing is I’ve got to educate myself because I’m not that person who’s going to come in and say, ‘This worked here.’ The concepts we used in Washington, concepts I used in Chelsea, they are specific to the culture there. So I’ve got to educate myself and then be as aggressive and intelligent and strategic as possible with Gavin, to improve every element of the club we can. The core of working intelligently and working harder than anyone else is always going to motivate me and making sure we get the players who feel the same.”

A new grass field was planted in February 2015, while a new turf pitch was installed in early 2015.
The sod was planted in a ver-tically draining, sand-based root zone that includes small amounts of peat and calcined clay to stabilize moisture content and to hold nutrients.
The grass field was built using over 4,600 tons of specialty sand blend and will drain up to 12 inches of precipitation an hour.
The grass field, widely
regarded as one of the
best fields in the state, is a
combination of 75 percent
perennial ryegrass and 25

that is perfectly suited
for cooler climates and
