Ecotourism Ecotourism combines your interests in nature and tourism by training you to enjoy – and help others enjoy – nature as it is, without damaging the environment or ecological system. Nature-friendly tourism is the fastest-growing area in the tourism industry as people increasingly visit national parks, take nature adventures, hike, bike, bird, and do other activities that connect people with nature.

Program Highlights: The Ecotourism program consists of six courses, a total

of 170 hours of instruction: Introduction to Ecotourism, Natural and Cultural Resources, Eco-Safety, Interpretation and Guiding, Nature-Based Law, and the Business of Ecotourism.

Field trips and case studies provide practical experience.

Upon completion of the program, the successful student will be able to identify careers in ecotourism, understand ecotourism terminology, and be knowledgeable about the ecotourism and adventuretourismfields.

The program is offered through the college’s Continuing Education Department in Chatham County.

Ecotourism offers employment opportunities as an ecological tour guide/interpreter, ecotourism entrepreneur, or specialist within a tourism business.

Culinary Arts (AAS Degree)and Natural Chef (Certificate)

The Culinary Arts and Natural Chef programs present a curriculum for students to develop expertise and passion for a holistic, nutritional, and naturally sustainable lifestyle. The program preparesgraduatesforsuccessfulcareersintheculinaryfieldandiscommitted to promoting the use of whole, organic, and local foods for general wellness and therapeutic applications.

Program Highlights: Each program includes over 400 hours of hands-on training in

the classroom, kitchen, and restaurant.

Instruction includes nutrition, basic kitchen skills, meal planning and preparation, therapeutic cooking, food procurement, sustainability, and serving skills.

Small business operation training is part of the program, providing those who want to open a restaurant, cater, or manage a kitchen with the skills to do so.

GraduatesearnaNaturalChefCulinaryArtscertificateor an associate degree in Culinary Arts.

The full-time program (Section I and II) is 18 weeks in length and 28 hours/week (for a total of 504 hours). This program includes Section I, Basic Culinary Techniques, and Section II, The Natural Chef.

Green Building and Renewable Energy

Green Building and Renewable Energy classes at Central Carolina Community College will train you in the skills needed for this exciting, growing industry. This program is an important component of the college’s commitment to workforce training in growing sustainable industries.

Program Highlights: The program is designed for current building industry

professionals, students, homeowners, and business owners. Youwilllearnaboutenergy-efficientbuildingtechniquesand

materials, sustainable building design, renewable energy applications, living roofs, and weatherization of existing homes. The program includes classroom instruction, fieldtrips,andhands-ontraining.

Classes are sponsored by the Continuing Education Department on the college’s Chatham County Campus.

TheprogramoffersNorthAmericanBoardofCertifiedEnergy Practitioners(NABCEP)certifiedtrainingandtestinginSolar Photovoltaic Systems. Successfully complete this class and youcantaketheSolarThermalEntryLevelCertificateexamination.

Sustainable Agriculture Sustainable Agriculture classes can show you how to achieve an abundant harvest of healthy, fresh garden produce using methods friendly to the soil, the plant, and the people who will consume the food. At the heart of sustainable agriculture is the commitment to preserve and improve the local economy, environment, and community health.

Program Highlights:Curriculum

Graduates receive an Associate in Applied Science degreeinSustainableAgriculture.Threecertificates are also available: Sustainable Vegetable Production, Sustainable Livestock Production, and Agricultural Sustainability.

Most courses meet once a week for 3-4 hours to maximize hands-on time and practical application of skills and theory. Due to the nature of agricultural work, classes are typically held in the daytime.

Graduates may choose to establish a farming operation of their own or to manage a farm that is individually or cooperatively owned. Other career opportunities include advocacy work with sustainableagriculturenonprofits,managementofproducedepartmentsandfarmers’markets, or work as a technician or production assistant on a university research farm.

Continuing Education The Continuing Education Department offers a variety

of Sustainable Agriculture classes including, but not limited to: growing organic vegetables, permaculture, and healing foods and herbs.

Classes run eight to 12 weeks and are usually held in the evening.

Most classes are held at the Chatham County Campus, but some classes are available at the West Harnett Center.

Sustainability Technologies Sustainability Technologies at Central Carolina Community College opens the door to a variety of careers in the growing green economy. The Associate in Applied Science in Sustainability Technologies degree builds on the college’s long experience in training workers and entrepreneurs forfieldsthatmeetthedemandforefficiencyandthegreen energyeconomy.Certificatesarealsoavailable.

Program Highlights: The Sustainability Technologies degree prepares students to

work in the renewable energy, green building, and sustainability measurementfields.Studentsmayalsochoosetoobtaina certificateinBiofuelsTechnology.

The Green Building courses consist of Construction 1 and Construction 2. Students will complete construction of a house each year. The construction program also includes architechtural drawing,greencertificationprograms,andenergyanalysis.

TheRenewableEnergyCertificateincludestraininginsolarPV,solar thermal, biofuels, and energy modeling.

The sustainability courses focus on the science and policy challenges and opportunities in maintaining businesses. Students focus on global issues, practical sustainability measurement for waste, transportation, energy, and water, and undertake a semester-long capstone project.

Green Education at a Green College

TheSustainableTechnologiesCenter,an18,000-square-footclassroom and lab building on the Chatham County Campus, is constructed to the high LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards of the U.S. Green Building Council. It houses the college’s biofuels, sustainable agriculture, green building/renewable energy, and culinary arts programs.

In addition, the Siler City Center and joint county-college library in Chatham County arealsoLEEDcertified.
