Part III – Information & Resources

“The nation that leads the world in 21st century clean energy will be the nation that leads in the 21st century global economy. America can and must be that nation.” – President Barack Obama

“Economic, environmental, and health concerns have spurred interest in "green building"--construction and maintenance practices designed to make efficient use of resources, reduce environmental problems, and provide long-term financial and health benefits. Federal laws and executive orders direct agencies to meet green building standards in federal buildings and to foster green building in the nonfederal sector; the latter includes private, state, local, and tribal entities and accounts for the majority of the nation's buildings…GAO identified 94 federal initiatives--implemented by 11 agencies--that foster green building in the nonfederal sector. About two-thirds of these initiatives are implemented by HUD (29 initiatives), EPA (18), and DOE (17). “ – Government Accountability Office

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) defines green jobs as either “jobs in businesses that produce goods or provide services that benefit the environment or conserve natural resources [OR] jobs in which workers’ duties involve making their establishment’s production processes more environmentally friendly or use fewer natural resources.”

According to the Brookings Institute’s Sizing the Clean Economy: A National and Regional Green Jobs Assessment:

• Most clean economy jobs are in manufacturing and public services. Solar, wind, smart grid, and other such energy-related fields represent a smaller portion of the clean energy economy.

• During the recession, the “cleantech” segments of the clean energy economy outperformed the national economy as a whole.

• Large portions of the clean energy economy are in the manufacturing and have nearly twice the export value of a typical US job

• Clean energy economy jobs offer better pay for low- and middle-skilled workers than the average job
