In April 2011, Clarence Brown came into the center for assistance for his grandsons Fabian and Dwaynie Brown. At the time, both were new to America, having come from Jamaica. Because Clarence was afraid that his grandsons would choose the wrong peers and crowd to hang around, he suggested having them enrolled into school or enlisted in the army. The B-Street Community Center assisted Mr. Brown by presenting the case to the Polk One Stop Center. Now, two years later, Fabian and Dwayne are both being trained to be Auto Mechanic Technicians.

From the President’s Desk

“ Happy New Year “

Welcome back! We are anticipating great triumphs on behalf of the Board of Directors, Members, Staff, Friends, Partners, and Donors. Collaborating and working together in 2012 concluded with much accomplishment. We are looking forward to an even more successful year in 2013.

Please note that structured activity and programs are on solid ground, but will need enhancements as usual. New programs are expected to meet the highest standards and branch out to include all area residents located in Lake Wales. Despite our effort to meet the identified needs of local citizens, we continue to struggle with insufficient funds and are perpetually in need of additional financial and in-kind assistance.

Our Annual Activity Report Statistics reveal that we handled more than 25,837 intake and referral cases in 2012. Other agencies, partners and community services have been provided as well. Many intensive activities are common at the center, thereby making it imperative that we expand the facility and staff.

As we aggressively seek annual operating funds, “Building Expansion Funds” are being sought through a combination of Grants, Loans and Contributions. Again, we appeal to our members and friends in soliciting the necessary One Million ($1,000,000) in capital funds for the 7,650 sq. ft. facility. Again, we thank all of our supporters for their generous and continuing support.

Since the next few months are critical in setting the stage for a number of initiatives, it is necessary that we exert all efforts in promoting this all important agenda.

Finally, we hope to see you at the March 1, 2013 Fundraising Gala affair at the Lake Wales Country Club.

Thanks to All, Clinton Horne, President Green & Gold Foundation, Inc.

On December 21, 2012, Tammie Fields from Channel 10 News came to the "B" Street Community Center for a story about helping the family of Abraham Shakespeare during Christmas time. What a difference a week makes in the life of Sentorria Butler as she watched her 3 children celebrate the Christmas they didn't think they'd have.

Things are starting to look up for the Butler family, thanks to Mrs. Snell getting the local branch of the NAACP and several others in the community together to assist with this very worthy mission for Butler and her children to have a Wonderful Christmas !!

Janice Snell is on the Board of Directors at the "B" Street Community Center and says, "We just had a whole lot of concerned citizens that wanted to give. Lake Wales is a community that's really concerned with helping people meet their needs within our community."

The NAACP gave Butler $100 and so did Allen Temple AME Church. The "B" Street Community Center gave Butler bus passes so she could seek employment. The Lake Wales Care Center donated new toys and a food basket for the holidays. The B Street Center purchased new shoes for all three children

and much needed household items and cleaning supplies. Ms. Butler and her children thanked Mrs. Snell, the B Street Center and all of the contributors for their acts and thoughts of kindness and generosity shown to them.

Green & Gold Foundation Extends Its Thanks to Our Generous Benefactors

LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program)

The Home Energy Assistance Category allows for a benefit payment on behalf of eligible households who have a heating or cooling obligation. There is one benefit payment per program year of which the amount is based on a home energy assistance matrix. The Agricultural and Labor Program, Inc. conducted an Energy Assistance Fair on January 3rd & 4th, 2013 at the B Street Community Center,

servicing over 300 residents. They returned on January 17th and 24th due to an overwhelming need in the community. LIHEAP will continue to offer services at least twice a month at the B Street Community Center.

The 2012, Inaugural BBQ, “Guns & Hoses Fundraiser” was very successful! First and foremost, the fundraiser committee would like to thank all participants, and volunteers for a job well done! A special thanks to the

Lake Wales Fire Department, Police Department and each of the donors and sponsors. November 10, 2012 was a day to remember; it was filled with enjoyment, laughter, excitement, and achievement. Funds received totaled to over $5,000. Net

proceeds will be used by the Green & Gold

Foundation, Inc. to help provide support to our

community by contributing to future opportunities, changes within the community, and success for future generations - particularly for the youth who are the future leaders of the world. Once again, THANKS to everyone who took time out of their busy schedule to help with and attend the Guns & Hoses Fundraiser. Congrats to the winners: The Guns !!!!
