SUPPLEMENTS: THE BUILDING BLOCKS of NEW ECONOMY WEEK

INTRODUCTORY NOTE This document is an addendum to Byron Kennard’s paper, “Green Commerce: Neither Business nor Politics as Usual,” in which he lays out the basis for reframing the “economic versus environment” debate. Kennard proposes a nationwide celebration of green businesses and industries through a project tentatively called New Economy Week (NEW). The project is intended to call green commerce to the attention of the public, the press, and the nation’s political leadership. The information presented here further documents the extent and variety of (a) green commerce, and of (b) green commerce’s advocates, a network that extends throughout many diverse non-profit organizations. It was not possible to include so much information in Kennard’s proposal and still keep it reasonably brief. We’re operating without that constraint here but, even so, what we present is still only a sketch of green commerce, which is a vast new universe of economic, social, and environmental endeavor full of glittering examples. Green commerce is hard to capture or to boil down. But that’s good. This extraordinary pervasiveness and variety proves the claims that Kennard makes in his proposal. The organizations described here are ones with an evident self-interest, as we see it, in participating in NEW – the building blocks, so to speak. But this is very much a work in progress, so a disclaimer of sorts is necessary. Entries in this document have been selected at “face-value” from information provided on Websites and from other sources. They do not represent any attempt to cover the universe or to obtain a scientific sample, nor were they selected based on any specifically stated values or criteria. None of these groups have been contacted regarding this project, since we are in the seminal stage of development. We do not mean to suggest that those listed are the only suitable organizations (or events) in any of the categories. There will be others -- probably numerous others. We have repeated some of the examples from the main text of Kennard’s proposal with added data. These supplements are not meant to serve as a directory. However, with contributions of further information from many sources likely to come over the months ahead, a directory may evolve. The Center for Small Business and the Environment is simply acting as a catalyst for building a network for the development of NEW. In many of the Websites listed, you will find links that make a quest for resources practically infinite! Glenn D. Pinder Research Director Center for Small Business and the Environment

Supplement G: Small Business participation in New Economy Week (NEW) Businesses will participate in New Economy Week in the hope of increasing their market share through the free promotion that the event will provide, and in order to gain allies who will help them in efforts to reduce barriers to their growth. Here’s an example. NaturaLawn of America, a small business located in Frederick, Maryland, is the nation’s first organic-based lawn care franchise service. NaturaLawn’s system consists of an exclusive organic-based fertilization program used in conjunction with a specially designed Integrated Pest Management program.

• In 2002, NaturaLawn reduced the use of petroleum derivative fertilizers by over 2.5 million pounds, and reduced petroleum based pesticides from entering into the environment by over 1,000,000 gallons when compared to traditional chemical lawn care.

• Since its founding in 1987, NaturaLawn has grown to be the fourth largest lawn care

company in the United States. It now has over 73 independently owned franchise locations servicing over 45,000 customers in 27 states and generating over $24 million in annual revenues. The company now employs 350 people. NaturaLawn is growing at the rate of 11 percent a year, which makes it a Green Gazelle.

These impressive statistics, however, must be viewed in perspective. The lawn care market in America is in excess of $5 billion. NaturaLawn’s share of that market is $24 million, less than one percent. Imagine the benefits to the green economy if the company were to vastly expand its market share! Imagine the benefits to the environment! But there’s an obstacle to NaturaLawn’s expansion. To survive, NaturaLawn of America must overcome intense opposition by the multi-billion dollar chemical lawn care industry which wants no part of a green competitor. The company is facing this opposition alone. "Small businesses that are radical innovators in mature industries are often treated as outsiders within their own trade associations,” states Philip E. Catron, NaturaLawn’s founder & President. “We're in an industry that is overwhelmingly chemical-based and we feel isolated.” New Economy Week (NEW) is designed to end NaturaLawn’s isolation by linking the company to a vast web of business allies and civic advocates. http://www.nl-amer.com/ There are literally thousands of newer green businesses (mostly small) that would be potential candidates for involvement in NEW. Following is a list of just a few that represent a cross-section of green commerce in the U.S. Pantheon Chemical 22601 N. 19th Avenue, Ste.139 Phoenix, Arizona 85027-1325 888-608-7888 - 623-780-2296 - Fax: 623-516-0414 http://www.pantheonchemical.com/index.htmMission is to revolutionize the industrial chemical industryby replacing widely-used hazardous products / processes with technologies that are 1) high-performance, 2) safe, and 3) a significant improvement to our customers' bottom line.
