One of the most powerful thinkers in history. His method of teaching by a question and answer approach is known as the Socratic method. Those who understood Socrates admired him greatly. The majority of citizens, however, did not understand the strange old man and his ways. In 399 when he was about 70, he was brought to trial for "corrupting the youth of Athens" and "neglecting the cities gods." In his defense he stated that his teachings were good because he forced Athenians to think about their values and actions. However the jury disagreed, condemned him to death through drinking a slow-acting poison - hemlock.
