Message from Greater Baltimore Hindu/Jain Temple Management. On behalf of the trustees and governors of GBT, we wish you happy and cheerful holidays.

GBT is a home of tranquility, sanctity and harmony which has been offering religious services, cultural activities and

religious education to the youth since its inception in 1998. It promotes unity and assimilation of all Hindu /Jain devotees and their customs, and charitable activities. The GBT has decided to restart the Newsletter publication from January of 2019. The Newsletter will provide you details of all upcoming events at the Temple. The goal is to also provide information to enhance the knowledge of our great religion and the relevance and benefits of our religious practices to our body and mind. We also intend to include information for our youth, who are the preservers of our great tradition, philosophy and values.

We request you to receive this newsletter with an open mind and to help improve its quality with your valuable

suggestions and support. We are happy to inform you that in addition to all major festivals celebrated by all, GBT is also conducting other religious events specific and important to people from different regions of India. (eg. Balaji Kalyanam, SitaRama Kalyanam , Annakut, Holi , Ayyappa Puja and and Srinathji Patotsav).

The number of temples is increasing and it is becoming very difficult to maintain and sustain these institutions. We

sincerely thank you for your patronage and for being strong pillars of support for GBT. With your help, we have completed many projects but we still face many challenges. We request your continued support and financial assistance to beautify the temple lobby, extend the prayer hall and establish a commercial kitchen. The GBT mission for the younger generation depends on your ongoing support and generous donations. The details for different donation categories will be published in the upcoming newsletters, separate mailings, Temple website and Facebook. All religious organizations depend on

dedicated volunteers for their success. Please help the Temple succeed by volunteering for the committees /events/activities of your preference.

Finally, please visit our recently revamped Temple web site <www.greaterbalimoretemple.org> for all religious,

educational and cultural event details, and volunteering opportunities.

Sincerely,

Satyam V Chary, MD – President, GBT Board of trustees.

Chitrachedu Naganna, MD – Chief, GBT Board of Governors.

GBT Bal Vihar The GBT Bal Vihar program has prospered since its inception 17 years ago. It provides an excellent platform to not

only impart religious, cultural , spiritual and language education, but to also help the children develop self-confidence

in their own identities.

The program is divided into three major areas of learning and education: 1. General knowledge of Hindu religion

• Shlokas and prayers, • Introduction to Gods and Goddesses, • Meaning of Hindu symbols, • History of India through stories of saints and leaders, • Epics Ramayana and Mahabharata • Vedic values, principles, and practices of Hindu religion.

2. Religious Festivals and Pujas

• Children also learn and enjoy performing pujas and celebrating festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Vasant

Panchami and many others. The annual day program is a joy for Bal Vihar families to showcase what students

have learned through songs, dramas, and dance, and is a must see for our entire community. 3. Indian Languages and Community Service

• Currently Hindi, Gujarati, Telugu and Kannada are offered, with a goal to teach Marathi and Tamil. • The program also fosters a sense of community and service. Children contribute to their community with

food drives during Gandhi Jayanti and Annadata programs.

The most recognizable attribute of this program's success is the parents, who devote their time & effort in nurturing

our children with so many facets of volunteering.

We will be accepting enrollment forms for next year's (2019-20 Bal Vihar year) beginning March 2019. Students from

the ages of 4 to 14 are eligible for enrollment.

For questions please reach out to the Bal Vihar Coordinators (Shriram Paranjpe, Mini Malhotra and Bansari

Gujar at [email protected]

DASAVATARA

paritrānāya sādhūnām vināśāya cha dushkritām

dharma-samsthāpanārthāya sambhavāmi yuge yuge

Bhagavath Geetha 4.8

Lord Krishna said: “For the protection of the Good, for the destruction of the Evil and for the establishment of the Truth, I am born again

and again in every age.”

The Advaitic principles of Hinduism are expressed in the Puranic literature as stories that can be understood by the common man. According to the Dasavatar concept, the one and only one “Supreme Power” (Vishnu) manifests himself in different forms in var ious “yugas”. These incarnations of God are depicted as starting from the humble Fish working up to the virtuous and consummate Man.

God appeared in the form of Matsya (Fish), Kurma (Tortoise), Varaha (Boar), Narasimha (Man-Lion), Vamana (Dwarf), Parasurama (Angry Man), Rama (The Ideal), Krishna (The Perfect Joy), and Buddha (The Enlightened). Yet to appear is the form of Kalki (Destroyer of evil) in the tenth Avatar. Kalki is to come at the end of Kaliyuga when the immorality on earth reaches its peak. He will

eliminate all evil anywhere and everywhere and re-establish righteousness (Dharma). For the serious student of Vedanta, the symbolic story of each Avatar represents different stages in the spiritual path towards Perfection.
