Professional Mobile Radio (“PMR”)“ cov-ers the demand for safety and security critical communication in industrial enter-prises and authorities. It offers mobile voice and data services for maintaining and controlling processes vital for perfor-mance, business operations and specific applications. The products based on rec-ognized standards are appropriate for var-ious application areas. Professional Mobile Radio systems are usually operated and managed independently by the customers having acquired an own license or by a professional service provider.

PROFESSIONAL MOBILE RADIO: BETTER THROUGH RELIABILITY AND SECURITY!

The central argument for the use of Professional Mobile Radio is the outstanding security and reliability of the systems. Professional Mobile Radio guarantees a level of security that cannot be achieved with public mobile telephone systems. The reasons are the spe-cial performance features tailored to the needs of professional users and the individual system design conceived to meet the required functions, security and reliability.

Professional Mobile Radio ensures smooth communication under all imaginable conditions. It is a must in all areas and places where communication is essential: at airports, in utility companies, supply and disposal enterprises, local public transport companies, municipal corporations and authorities like police, fire brigades and res-cue services as well as other public safety authorities and organizations. However, also traditional companies – for example in the chemical, automotive and steel industry – are using Professional Mobile Radio systems to optimize both reliability and efficiency within the company. Classical application areas include the manage-ment of business processes, emergency and rescue operations, supervisory tasks and data applications.

Professional Mobile Radio is distinguished by special performance features which can be reproduced inadequately at best in mobile telephone systems, but can never be implemented with a comparable quality. These features include above all extremely fast call setup, communication possibility in any type of groups called, even in very large on-call groups, call prioritization and guaranteed emergency call.

Professional Mobile Radio is protected against eavesdropping (tap-proof) and guaran-tees the confidentiality of voice and data communication. Its special performance fea-tures permit the highly efficient information exchange between mobile units, between mobile units and the operations center, as well as between the individual devices and systems (e.g. for system remote control and remote inquiry of statuses or databases). Since dependence on external infrastructures is completely avoided or largely mini-mized, Professional Mobile Radio guarantees failsafe performance and ensures that the radio capacity and radio coverage needed are really available – both in everyday opera-tion and in case of disasters and emergency situations. Thus, the highest level of safety and security imaginable for mobile communication is guaranteed. Professional Mobile Radio works reliably in all situations, even and especially in those when it counts.

International standards generate competition in the market. Competition improves both the quality and performance features of the products offered, leads to a vari-ety of offerings and fair prices in line with the market. This results in a wide choice of technically sophisticated solutions and high cost efficiency. However, stand-ardization also guarantees the interoperability between systems and terminals from different manufacturers. With the decision for a system manufacturer, the customer will not be bound regarding the terminals required. Thus, users, opera-tors and manufacturers can be sure to invest in a future-oriented technology with long-term perspective.

Professional Mobile Radio is not an off-the-peg product. The customer himself can decide which functions, degree of redundancy and how much capacity he requires in the individual places. He also decides as to how his system shall be protected against outside influences such as forces of nature, technical failures (e.g. of the power supply or transmission system) or sabotage. He knows and manages the interfaces between his communication system and other technical facilities such as command & control centers or databases and can thus protect them efficiently against external threats. In short: Only with Professional Mobile Radio the user hasthe functional sovereignty over the communication system indispensable for main- taining and controlling processes critical for performance, business operations and specific applications.

In addition, only the Professional Mobile Radio product scope includes terminal devices whose robustness and variety of application options (IP marking, intrinsic safety, accessories) meet exactly the individual needs of professional users.

Specialist departments and working groups form the “heart” of the Association’s work. The member companies contribute with the experience and know-how of their employ-ees. Together they work out topics that serve and promote the development of the PMR market in Germany.

The committee work includes subjects such as PMR equipment and technologies, sys-tem solutions, broadband applications and frequency spectrum regulations. Working groups deal with specific questions regarding terminals, indoor coverage, command & control rooms as well as paging.

Equal participation in the working committees is open to all member companies of the Association.

The Bundesverband Professioneller Mobilfunk e.V. (PMeV), i.e. Federal Association of Professional Mobile Radio, isa federation of leading suppliers and users of communication systems for mobile professional applications. Its members include manufacturers, system providers and application houses as well as network operators and users. As leading expert, the PMeV Association is the first-choice contact for all questions concerning secure and reliable communication solutions for professional applications.

The PMeV is shaping the future. This Association is an engine for innovation and influences the political and regu-latory framework conditions regarding the implementation of PMR solutions. High-performance PMR solutions ensure the safety and security critical communication of authorities and industrial enterprises and are therefore indispensable for the functioning of our society.

The PMeV Association further develops the PMR market in Germany: - We bring together manufacturers, customers and essential users to assess and rate technologies and discuss both opportunities and risks of technical solutions and concepts.- We offer the platform for a neutral, manufacturer-independent and partnership-based dialog with market partners, politicians as well as authorities and institutions. - We work out basic concepts for directives and standards and develop framework conditions. - We inform the public, support events with presentations and lectures and organize our own roadshows. - We are the promotional supporter of the PMRExpo.

The PMeV Association pursues comprehensive approaches for using standard- ized technologies to satisfy the requirements of Professional Mobile Radio users. Based on analog (classical operational radio, MPT1327) and digital (TETRA, DMR, dPMR) Professional Mobile Radio systems as well as professional digital paging systems, the Association develops future-oriented utilization concepts. In this context, complementary technologies and broadband standards are also being taken into account and included in an overall solution.

PMRmobil – PMR ON SITE

The PMeV Association is the PMRExpo promotional supporter. During the last years, the PMRExpo has become to the leading European Exhibition for Professional Mobile Radio and Control Rooms. During this event, leading companies of this sector pre-sent their latest products and solutions. Users report on their experiences and pro-ject developments. The PMRExpo has taken place since 2001.

For further information please visit www.pmrexpo.com.

Depending on the requirements, the PMeV Association organizes the PMRmobil Roadshow. It represents a regional complementary event to the PMRExpo. The PMRmobil Roadshow addresses users in their regions and offers a mixed program of lectures on current and interesting topics and an accompanying Trade Exhibition.
