    Etymology

    Dehradun is made up of two words Dehra and doon. 'Dehra' is derived from the

    word "dera", meaning camp, and "doon" is a term for the valley that lies between

    the Himalayas and the "Shivaliks". When Guru Ram Rai, son ofGuru Har Rai,

    came to this region along with his followers, he established a camp here for their

    stay. It was around this time that the modern city of Dehradun started to develop.

    This is when the word Dehra was linked to doon, and thus the city was named

    Dehradun.[5]Some historians also believe that the word Dehra cannot be regarded

    as a term for camping.[6]

    The history of the capital ofUttarakhand, Dehradun (sometimes written as Dehra

    Doon, nicknamed "Doon Valley") is linked to the story

    ofRamayanaandMahabharata. It is believed that after the battle

    betweenRavanandLord Ram, Lord Ram and his brotherLaxmanvisited this

    site.Dronacharya, the legendary royal guru to theKauravasandPandavasin the

    epicMahabharatais also believed to have been born and resided in

    Dehradun.[7]Evidence such as ancient temples and idols have been found in the

    areas surrounding Dehradun which have been linked to the mythology

    ofRamayanaandMahabharata. These relics and ruins are believed to be around

    2000 years old. Furthermore, the location, the local traditions and the literature

    reflect this region's links with the events of Mahabharata and Ramayana. Even

    after the battle ofMahabharata, thePandavashad influence on this region as the

    rulers ofHastinapuralong with the descendants ofSubahuruled the region as

    subsidiaries. Likewise,Rishikeshis also mentioned in the pages of history

    whenLord Vishnuanswered the prayers of the saints, slaughtered the demons and

    handed the land to the saints.

    In the seventh century this area was known as Sudhnagar and was described by the

    Chinese traveler Huen Chang. It was Sudhnagar that later came to be recognised as

    the name of Kaalsi.Edicts of Ashokahave been found in the region along the

    banks of riverYamunain Kaalsi indicating the wealth and importance of the

    Qadir in 1785. In 1806 Nepali KingPrithvi Narayan ShahunitedNepaland many

    of the Indian territories now fell underNepalsuch asAlmora, Phatankot,Kumaon,

    Garhwal, Simur,Shimla,Kangraand Dehradun itself.

    On the western front Garhwal and parts ofHimachal Pradeshup toPunjaband on

    the eatern front the state ofSikkimup toDarjeelingbecame parts ofGreater

    Nepalfor a brief period until the BritishEast India Companywent on war with

    Nepal from 1814 to 1816. The war ended with signing of theTreaty of

    Sugowliwhere almost a third ofGreater Nepalwas ceded to British East India

    company. The British got Dehradun in 1816 and

    colonisedLandourandMussooriein 1827-1828.

    Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, was quite fond of the city and often

    visited the city and spent his last few days here before passing away in Delhi in

    1964.[8]Another leader from the independence movement,Rash Behari Bose, who

    was one of the key organisers of theGhadar conspiracyand later, theIndian

    National Armywas based in Dehradun in his early days before he was forced to

    move to Japan in 1915 to continue the freedom struggle.

    Post independence Dehradun and other parts ofGarhwalandKumaonwere

    merged withUnited Provinceswhich was later renamed to the state ofUttar

    Pradesh. In 2000,Uttarakhand(earlier called Uttaranchal) state was created from

    common in urban areas for men to wear shirts and trousers, denims or kurta-

    pyjamas as daily wear. In winter men usually dress in jacket, hat and overcoat.

    Hemp is grown in great quantities in this region, so its yarn is frequently used as

    lining.

    The largest profession in Dehradun is agriculture, and there are large numbers of

    people in the military, businesses or education. Staple foods are rice and dal with

    raita, curd and salad. Dehradun is known for its lychees and basmati rice.

    There are fairs (melas) throughout the year. Notable fairs include Magh Mela, held

    on the 14 January and Jhanda Mela in March, a fair for the Hindu community that

    attracts Hindus from all over India and abroad. There are different religions

    followed in this state and they are Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh etc.Sikhismisprominent

    religion in Dehradun with over 25 % population representing sikhs. The sikhs are

    prominent in Racecourse and other areas of the town.

    Mussoorie and Kempty Falls

    Known as the queen of hill stations,

    Mussoorie, located at a height of

    2,500 meters in the green

    Himalayan range, is an excellent

    the plains. An hour's journey from

    Dehradun, Mussoorie is a

    convenient weekend destination.

    With water cascading down from

    an altitude of 4,500 feet and

    splitting into five cascades, the

    Kempty falls, located 15 kms. from

    Mussoorie, offer a panoramic view.

    Sahastradhara

    Set amidst the picturesque bounty of nature, Sahastradhara isa cold sulphur water

    spring about 15 km from Dehradun. The spring is believed to have exceptional

    medicinal value. The dripping caves and a bath in the Baldi River near the spring

    are said to rejuvenate the body and soul. Many people come to the spring in the

    hope of being cured from polio and other such ailments.

    Haridwar

    Located 55 kms from Dehradun, the the holy town of Haridwar is the gateway to

    the four pilgrimages of Uttarakhand. It is also the starting point for those looking to

    journey, to the sacred sources of the Ganga and the Yamuna. According to legend,

    the city is supposed to be as old as Varanasi. The more than 300 temples in the

    town cater to the thousands of Hindus who visit each year to bathe in the holy

    waters at Haridwar.

    Doon School

    Nestled in the Doon Valley with the magnificent Garhwal Himalayas

    to the north and the sal-clothed Shivaliks to the south, the Doon School

    is one of India's leading schools with an international reputation. A

    Dhanaulti

    Unspoilt, unexplored Dhanaulti is as close to nature as you can get with rows of

    Deodars, vast green meadows and a gentle cool breeze to greet you. About 30 km

    from Mussorie, Dhanaulti provides excellent views of the snow-capped Himalayas.

    From Dhanaulti you can take a day trip to Surkhunda Devi about 10 km away. A

    trek of about 2 km to a height of about 3000 m which a 180 degree view of the

    mountain ranges from the top.

    Rajaji National Park

    The Rajaji National Park is situated at a distance of 23 km from Dehradun. Rajaji

    is a magnificent ecosystem at the beginning of the vast Indo-Gangetic plains, and

    has the vegetation of several zones and forest types. Known especially its elephant

    population, barking deer, leopards, sambar, peafowl, iIt is home to as many as 23

    species of mammals and 315 bird species.

    Rishikesh

    Serving as a gateway to the Himalayas, Rishikesh is 45 kms from Dehradun. The

    city is considered to be sacred as it is believed that meditation at this place leads to

    attainment of salvation. There are many temples, some ancient, some new along

    the river Ganges. Rishikesh is now a popular white-water rafting centre,

    backpacker hang-out, and gateway to treks in the Himalaya.
