LUMINARIUM INTER SCHOOL ENGLISH LITERATURE FESTIVAL 2015

Dear Principal, English literature is the path to knowledge. It has been a key for understanding to the world and a means of inspiring and supporting cultural and social movements. Literature continues to transmit messages of cultural awareness, beliefs, spiritual growths and ideals from one generation to the other. Studying literature can be an enriching, eye opening experience. To expose the children to the beauty of English Literature, DPS Dwarka is organizing ‘LUMINARIUM – The Inter School English Literature Festival’ on 15 & 16 July 2015. A multitude of innovative and creative competitions have been planned which will enable the children to learn more and explore more. Our aim is to provide the participants the finest of educational opportunities. We hope that you will appreciate our endeavour in this direction. GENERAL GUIDELINES

Schools must confirm their participation by sending the duly filled in

Registration Form latest by Thursday, 30 April 2015. Schools can also

register through the link ‘LUMINARIUM’ on the school website

www.dpsdwarka.com Entries received after the scheduled date will not be

accepted.

The first 25 schools that register will be eligible to participate in the event.

Registration time at DPS Dwarka on both the days is from 8.00 a.m. to

8.45 a.m.

Schools must ensure that no student participates in more than one event.

All students must be in their school uniforms, unless they are in the costume for

their respective event.

All participants must carry their school Identity Cards.

Schools are requested to send a teacher escort with the participants to ensure

proper coordination & discipline.

The day / date wise schedule with event details has been given herewith for

reference.

Schools must participate in all the events to qualify for the Overall Trophy.

Decision of the judges will be final and binding.

General Guidelines

PRELIMINARY ROUND

This is a written elimination round.

The focus would be on the following books by Roald Dahl CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY MATILDA THE BFG

FINAL ROUND

Top 6 teams from the Preliminary Round will qualify for the Final Round of the quiz.

The topics for the final round will include characters, theme, plot and spellings from the above mentioned books. There will be an audio visual round as well.

Decision of the Quiz Master will be final and binding.

Both rounds will be held on the same day.

General Guidelines

The participants will twist a fairy tale of their choice from the beginning till the end using the same characters.

A-4 size ruled sheets will be provided by the host school.

The participants will write the story in approximately 150-200 words.

General Guidelines:

A story of any genre should be narrated in chorus.

Usage of props, musical instruments and background music is not allowed.

A warning bell will ring after 4 ½ minutes and the final bell after 5 minutes.

A two tiered platform will be provided to the participants by the host school (if required).

Students are required to be in their school uniform. Judgement Criteria:

General Guidelines:

Topic for the Turncoat Debate will be given on the spot.

5 minutes preparation time will be given after the topic is allotted.

Each speaker will have to speak for 2 minutes on the given topic (one minute for the motion, one minute against the motion).

No interjection will be allowed.

General Guidelines:

Each team will pick up a set of 5 clues (verbal & visual) in a draw of lots from a hat, based on which they will narrate a story.

Their story must incorporate all the 5 clues.

Each team will get 1 ½ minutes to discuss and 1 ½ minutes to narrate the story.

Both members should narrate the story.

No written material should be used during the narration.

Each team will recite a sonnet by any famous poet.

Participants should be dressed in relevant costumes.

Props, music (live or recorded) or any other kind of musical instruments will not be allowed.

A warning bell will ring after 2½ minutes and the final bell after 3 minutes. Judgement criteria:

Event : SHAKESPEARE’S MAJESTIC MAIDENS Eligibility : Classes IX - XI No. of Participants : 4 - 6 students Time Limit : 5 minutes (including entry and exit) Venue : Auditorium

General Guidelines

Participants have to enact a scene highlighting the importance/strength of

women characters in Shakespearean plays. The play will be allotted to the

schools once they register for the event. The scene from the allotted play

may involve the use of narrator / chorus / other characters or a combination

of any of the three.

Participating schools should carry their own props on the day of the event.

Participants should come dressed in suitable costumes. No green rooms will

be provided.

Power Point Presentation and live music can be used.

Instrumentalists (maximum 2) are excluded from the main cast.

Participating schools are allowed to bring any two musical instruments.

One key board will be permanently placed in the wings for all participating

schools, which may be used as one of the two instruments allowed.

Event : CLUE UNCLUED

Eligibility : Classes VI - VII No. of Participants : 1 student from each school Time Limit : One Hour for story writing followed by narration Word Limit : 250 Words Venue : Computer Lab

General Guidelines:

Each student will be presented a set of words (Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives etc.) in jumbled order. The participants will unscramble all the words and write down the correct words with correct spellings on the sheet provided.

Thereafter, the participants will write a story using all the given words. They must underline the given words as used in their story.

A title should be provided to the story. The participants will then read out their stories with proper intonation and voice modulation.

Both the written story and its narration will be considered for judgement. Judgement Criteria:

Creativity

Vocabulary & written expression

Reading, fluency & intonation

Negative marking for : a) Spelling mistakes in unscrambling words b) Exceeding the word limit

General Guidelines:

Each participant will be provided a short poem with a simile in it (same poem will be given to all the participants).

The participants should recognize the simile and weave a self composed poem of 20-25 lines around the simile.

The simile should be an intrinsic part of the theme / central idea of the poem composed, and not simply a poetic device used to beautify the poem.

The simile can be repeated in the poem.

Participants will enact any one of the poems from Vikram Seth’s ‘BeastlyTales’ and give a different ending to the Tale.

The ending should convey a message.

Participants should come dressed in suitable costumes. No green rooms will be provided.

Participants can make use of props (not more than 3).

General Guidelines

The participants will design a table mat based on any story taken from ‘The Jungle Book’ by Rudyard Kipling.

The table mat has to be colourful and relevant to the topic.

The table mat should be hand-made.

Name of the participants, class & name of the school should be mentioned on the reverse of the mat.

The table mats will be retained by the host school. Judgement Criteria:

The participants will have to compose a Ballad based on the given theme and submit it on the above link.

The ballad should comprise six stanzas of four lines each with the rhyme scheme abcb.

A theme will be flashed on the link on Monday, 06 July 2015 at 9.00 a.m. sharp. The link will close at 11.00 a.m. the same day.

Each composition must be given a suitable title.

Entries should be typed in MS Word Format.

Entries must be submitted with full name of the participants along with the class and name of the school.
