Pre-Paid Funeral Plans

People in general do not like talking about funerals and it is very common for people not to let their family know what their personal wishes are and when the time comes, this can cause a lot of arguments and worry for the people you leave behind.

J M Wills and Legal Services can help you plan and pay for your funeral now so your loved ones will have nothing to worry about later. Your funeral plan will be bespoke and arranged to your unique preferences and its capital will be index-linked to provide the funeral you want when the time comes.

DUST DOWN YOUR DANCING SHOES FOR CHARITY

WELL-KNOWN local dance professional and Freeman ofBroxtowe Borough,

Peggy Payne is hosting another afternoon of ballroom dancing, to raise money for

two worthy charities in March. The Tea Dance will take place, on Wednesday 5•h

March 2014 from l.30pm-4.30pm at Beeston Youth and Community Centre in

aid of Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Iris White's chosen

charities, Treetops Hospice and The Helpful Bureau, Stapleford. Peggy said:

"Holding Tea Dance's combines two of my passions dancing and raising money

for good causes. I really enjoy watching everyone have just as much fun as me and

learning some new skills." Music will be provided by local keyboard player Richard

Keeling with tickets costing just £6.00, including a cream cake. Everyone is wel

come no matter what dancing skills they have. Councillor White said: "I always

appreciate any support given to help me raise money for these two worthy causes.

Peggy hosts great events and I am always in admiration of her tireless fundraising

efforts. Hopefully lots of people will come and show their support."

Peggy is no stranger to fundraising having given her support to the Mayor's

Charities for many years and always playing a vital role in raising as much money

as possible. She was awarded Freedom of the Borough in 20 l 0 for her years

fundraising to help the less fortunate.

To purchase tickets please contact Peggy Payne on 0115 925 9580 or

email [email protected] Alternatively, for more information on

this and other upcoming charity events, please contact Broxrowe Borough Council

Little Grapevine Tip

Home Interiors– Use Your Flat Surfaces

For busy homes create a focal point. Use the flat surface as a showcase area, with one central display. For instance, use your most beautiful vase full of dried flowers as the centre of attention atop an upright piano. Put your favourite decorative ceramic bowl in the centre of a windowsill (as long as it doesn't interfere with the opening of the window). Cluster a trio of unusual glass paper-weights on a radiator cover. By creating a focal point, anything else put on the surface sticks out like a sore thumb.

Beeston U3A Celebrates Its SOOth Member

Founded in 2011, Beeston U3A has welcomed its SOOth member. To mark this

very special occasion Liz Barnes, Beeston U3A' s Chairperson, presented Geoffrey

Cawthorne, the SOOth person to join, with a year's free membership at the monthly

Open Meeting on Thursday 2 January.

Liz welcomed Geoffrey and said his joining represented a very important milestone

in the development of Beeston U3A. Geoffrey from W ollaton was looking for a

friendly group of walkers so he could get some more exercise. A friend advised him

to join a local U3A. After some research in his local library, he decided to come

along and join one of the regular walking groups from Beeston U3A.

Beeston University of the Third Age provides educational, creative and leisure

opportunities for retired people. You can find out about its monthly open

meetings, interest groups and social activities on its website

www.beestonu3a.org.uk or email [email protected] if you have

Multi-purpose vehicles - or MPVs as you probably know them - have been around since the mid-1980s and since then they have mutated into various sizes and layouts to suit a wider audience. But if you think laterally for a moment there's been a vehicle that qualifies as multi-purpose that has been on sale for decades - the humble pick-up. It's a humble thing because for a long time it has been solely a working vehicle, but in recent years the combination of utility and visual toughness has made it desirable in its own right. Chevrolet is going to get in on the act too, with its Colorado. In its US homeland the pick-up truck is the best-selling vehicle of all, but this will be the first one to reach the UK. It's part of a bigger picture for Chevrolet in Europe as it broadens its range with more vehicles that have previously been sold only in the US or Asia, and the Colorado is the most recent example. There are no surprises with the exterior appearance: practicality still comes first so there is a sizeable load area at the rear and a cabin arrangement to suit your own needs. You can have a single cab, crew cab or double cab to balance space for cargo and people. But don't think of it as

just a workhorse. For starters you can tell immediately it's a Chevrolet by the family grille up front, and despite being a good deal larger than most of its siblings there is clear family resemblance. There's also a good deal of scope for making the Colorado look just how you want it: the alloy wheel options are appealing and you can add chrome detailing to boot. The Colorado is classed as a medium-sized truck; not one of the behemoths that you might associate with the US and so is suited to UK roads; big enough to be cavernous but not so big that you'll never get it down a village high street. You get the same impression once you've climbed aboard. The view out is as uncluttered and as panoramic as you would hope for, and looking above most other traffic and far ahead never fails to be an advantage. But you don't feel like you're driving a bus either. For starters the cabin is clearly influenced by the interiors of cars rather than trucks. Choose one of the higher-specification versions and you have a pleasing two-tone fascia with a slick-looking centre console that takes care of the climate control and audio system.

Even the more humble versions look good, with a chunky steering wheel to grasp, smart and clear instrument displays and comfortable seats. Yes the plastics are hardy rather than luxuriant but you know they'll take abuse and come back for more. There's a choice of a 2.5-litre or 2.8-litre Duramax diesels, both of which provide exactly the kind of motive power you want and need; lots of torque from low engine revs and an easy-going nature. However the relative refinement of both the Colorado's cabin and the powerplant itself means that you don't have to hear everything that the engine is doing: it just gets on with the job in hand. Even at motorway speeds there is just a distant thrum from the engine room as it happily ticks along. The manual gearbox option thankfully gives you a positive shift without a vast gearlever that so often comes as standard in a pick-up, while the six-speed automatic is impressively smooth and unobtrusive. The other thing most people expect from a pick-up is laughably vague steering and a bouncy ride, but there's none of that with the Colorado. With a little over four turns from lock-to-lock your steering inputs are faithfully replicated at the front wheels and low speed manoeuvres aren't as daunting as its size might suggest. Out on the road you can place the Colorado accurately and it will cruise in a rock-steady fashion without needing lots of steering inputs. The ride is understandably soft, and although it has leaf spring suspension at the rear for maximum load capacity it's all tied down very well – only seriously bad roads taken at speed will cause any significant movement.

With the business of driving and accommodating passengers taken care of, the rest of the Colorado's duties are a cinch; the vast load bay means you can chuck in whatever you like, the rear tailgate is sturdy enough to stand on for a better view. And the switchable four-wheel drive system works very well indeed, flipping between modes on the move. And it can tackle seriously tough terrain too - certainly the worst Thai roads imaginable.

Chevrolet Colorado Z71 2.5 Duramax LTZ, £18,500 (est) Engine: 2.5-litre diesel producing 148bhp and 258lb.ft of torque Transmission: Five-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels Performance: Top speed 115mph (est) 0-62mph 12 seconds (est) Economy: 30.4mpg combined (est) Emissions: 210g/km (est)

150g (8 oz) ready rolled puff pastry 1 egg, beaten 2 medium red onions ½ tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil 3 tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar 1 ½ tablespoons dark brown sugar 4 slices Parma Ham fresh rosemary 50g (2 oz) Feta cheese 1 fig salt and pepper

Start by making the puff-pastry cases. Unroll the puff pastry and cut out 2 x12cm squares. Using a sharp knife, cut heart shapes from the two pastry squares and score ½ cm from the edge of the hearts, around their perimeter. Prick the inner heart with a fork and brush the pastry with beaten egg, season with cracked black pepper. Place on a baking sheet and cook in a preheated oven at 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6 for 10 minutes, until beginning to brown. Take the pastries out of the oven

and use your knife to trace the line that

was scored before cooking. Very carefully,

peel off the top of the inner heart to leave a heart-

shaped pastry case. To make the filling, finely slice

the red onions and fry in olive oil until golden. Add 2 ½ tablespoons of balsamic vinegar and 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, stirring until the onions have caramelised, and season to taste with salt and cracked black pepper. Tear up a slice of Parma Ham into the base of each tart. Share

the caramelised onions between the tart cases, sprinkle with fresh rosemary and chunks of feta cheese and return to the oven to cook for a further 10 minutes or until the cheese begins to brown. Whilst the tarts are cooking, quarter the fig and place on a baking tray. Drizzle with the remaining balsamic vinegar and brown sugar and season with cracked black pepper. Place in the oven for 5-6 minutes until they are soft and caramelised. Serve the tarts fresh out of the oven with a slice of Parma Ham, roasted balsamic figs, and sprigs of fresh rosemary.

BROXTOWE BOROUGH COUNCIL, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL AND LLOYDS BANK HELP LOCAL BUYERS SECURE THEIR FIRST HOME

Broxtowe Borough Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Lloyds Bank

joined forces today to help first-time buyers purchase a home with a deposit of 5%.

Broxtowe Borough Council and Nottinghamshire County Council have each set

aside £500,000 which should help around 40 buyers on to the property ladder

through the Local Lend a Hand scheme, which will be available in local branches

of Lloyds Bank from the beginning of February.

First-time buyers often say that raising a deposit is the biggest challenge they face

when looking to take their first steps onto the property ladder. The Local Lend a

Hand scheme will help buyers who can afford a mortgage, but have not previously

been able to build up the necessary deposit. Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council,

Councillor Milan Radulovic said: "This scheme will be a welcome boost for first

time buyers in Broxtowe who often find raising a deposit a big challenge when

taking their first steps onto the property ladder.

"We are delighted to be working with the County Council and Lloyds Bank to

help local people take their first steps onto the property ladder. We also hope that

this will provide a boost to the local economy in Broxtowe."

Councillor David Kirkham, Chairman of Finance and Property Committee at

Nottinghamshire County Council, said: "Raising a substantial deposit is tough for

first time buyers. The Local Lend a Hand scheme gives first time buyers in

Broxtowe the double advantage of having less to find up front as a deposit and

more affordable monthly repayments. This is a low risk investment for the County

and District Councils which will stimulate the housing market in Broxtowe and

serve as a welcome boost to the local economy."

Marc Page, mortgages director at Lloyds Bank comments, "With the launch of

Local Lend a Hand in Broxtowe we're making the housing market more accessible

to more people.

Page 49: GRAPEVINE WOLLATON / BRAMCOTE FEB 2014

Helping people to buy their first home is crucial in achieving and maintaining a

sustainable housing market. Local Lend a Hand addresses some of the real prob

lems that prospective buyers in Broxtowe might face." Cecilie Booth, Director at

Sector Treasury Services, said: "Many potential first-time buyers in Broxtowe, in

cluding those on the Council's housing register, or currently occupying affordable

or social housing units, are unable to save a sufficient deposit, even though they

could afford mortgage repayments on a typical first home. This initiative is

designed to bridge that gap. Local authorities will both free up social housing for

the more vulnerable and reduce payouts to private landlords and expensive short

term accommodation. More people will be able to take the step of buying their

first home, stimulating the local housing market and benefitting the wider local

economy." Subject to Lloyds Bank's usual lending criteria, borrowers are able to

select any existing property in the area covered by Broxtowe Borough Council up

to a maximum loan of £142,500. First-time buyers will put down a minimum 5%

of the property price, and Broxtowe Borough Council and Nottinghamshire

County Council will provide a cash backed indemnity of up to 20% as additional

security. The local authority then earns interest on this amount.

The first-time buyer owns the property in its entirety, and will have access to a

range of products at a lower rate of interest than would normally be available for

this level of deposit. Those interested in the local scheme should visit their local

branch of Lloyds Bank for more information.

Sue Pearce, Local Mortgage Manager,

Nottingham LDG; Corinne Foster,

Mortgage Protection Adviser; Malcolm

Staley, Broxtowe Borough Council;

Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe,

Councillor Iris White; Councillor

David Kirkham, Chairman of Finance and

Property Committee at Nottinghamshire

County Council; Nigel Stevenson,

Nottinghamshire County Council and

Graham Cooper, Local Director,

Nottingham Group launch the scheme

outside the Beeston branch of

Lloyds Bank.

Volunteers needed for Relay for Life Organisers of an exciting fundraising

event in Nottingham are urging local

people to get involved. Cancer Research

UK' s Relay For Life is a celebration of life

and hope which unites communities to help

beat cancer and ends in a family and team

event. T earns of between eight to 15 people

- of all ages, levels of fitness and from all

walks of life - are needed to rake part in the

overnight fundraising festival at Highfields

Sports Ground, University Boulevard, Bee

ston over the weekend of 19 and 20 July.

During the relay, team members rake it in

turns to walk round a track while everyone

else enjoys a wide range of fun activities on

offer. As Relay For Life is non-stop through

the night, those team members not on the

track take turns to rest, eat, or sleep in their

tents, which are set up close by. As dusk

falls, the atmosphere quietens as the

Candle of Hope ceremony begins. The event is the most poignant part of Relay For

Life when specially made Candle of Hope

bags - decorated with touching messages in

memory or in celebration of loved ones -

are filled with sand and lit up with candles

around the track. This is the first time Relay For Life Not

tingham has taken place in Beeston but the

9th time it has taken place in the city. Now

the committee of volunteers staging Relay

For Life is looking for local support to help

make it a tremendous success.

As well as recruiting teams, they are search

ing for motivated people who want to help

organise the event itself and get the whole

community involved. Gary Thomas, volun

teer Chair of Cancer Research UK' s Relay

For Life in Nottingham, said: "We would

love to hear from anyone who wants to find

out more about Relay For Life and how

they can help. It is a great way to spend time

with your friends, family and colleagues

while raising money for a seriously worth

while cause. Everyone knows someone who

has been touched by cancer. Taking part in

Relay For Life is a positive way to be part of

your local community and help make a real

difference.

"Cancer Research UK wants to bring

forward the day when all cancers are

cured. By taking part in Relay For Life and

raising vital funds, people in Nottingham

can help to accelerate the progress that is

being made against this devastating disease."

Cancer Research UK is dedicated to saving

more lives by preventing, controlling and

curing all cancers. The charity funds the

work of thousands of scientists, doctors and

nurses who are fighting over 200 types of

cancer. Thanks to Cancer Research UK' s

work, more people are surviving cancer than

ever before. Survival rates have doubled over

the last 40 years and the charity's work has

been at the heart of that progress. But

despite improvements in treatment, cancer

causes more than one in four of all deaths in

the UK. Cancer Research UK wants to

change that and needs the help of people in

Nottingham to help save many more lives.

Relay For Life visit cruk.org/relay or call

Hand Tool Storage

Decades ago, home handymen developed an amazingly simple and efficient system for keeping hand tools in order. They put up a sheet of "Peg Board" over the garage workbench, and hung tools off Peg Board hooks. To make things even easier, they traced around the tools, so they could quickly see if any tool was missing, what the tool was, and where it should be put back. This system still works wonders.
