From the Principal’s desk…………...

Dear parents and students, Welcome back to all our returning families

and new families for 2019!

The year has started, as 2018 finished, in a

rush!

And, as I am sure that you have seen there are many things happening within the school;

some of these being:

The Community Hub Building is nearing

completion;

A fence has been erected around the Support Unit SPA playground; parents and students this is an out-of-bounds

area before and after school;

A new GATE to the fixed equipment; par-ents please do not allow your child to

swing on this;

Painting of C Block; and

A sixth demountable being installed.

In addition to this the P&C and I applied for a Federal Government Building Better Communities Grant, of $20,000, which was successful; this will be used to help offset the $240,000 cost of the Community Hub

Building.

We are required to put our student numbers in to the Department of Education Head Office on Thursday 7 February; this I find somewhat frustrating as it will be a little over a school week (by 1 day) since we returned. There are still many families who are yet to return from overseas holidays, or just return to school. This makes it very difficult to finalise classes and ensure that staff, students and parents are all comfortable with the organisation for the remainder of the

year.

Keeping this in mind, parents are to inform the school if they are taking their children out of school for a period longer than 10 days; it is up to the school principal to give their permission for this to happen. I have always

allowed parents to do this, as I see the educational benefits of travel and the positive impact it has on the lives of our young

people.

I am hoping to have classes finalised by the

end of week 3

A reminder to our parents that School times

are:

START - 8.55AM – all children must be at school and ready for lessons at this

time

FINISH - 3.00PM – all children must be collected from school no later than 3.20PM; after this time children will be taken to CAMP AUSTRALIA OSHC, in the school hall and, parents will have to

pay for this.

Reading through some of the groups I belong to, on social media, the other evening I came across an interesting site,

www.FromHome.com by Leslie Means.

She asked her writers to share some of their favourite conversation starters with their kids. These are especially great after a long school day when your children do not want to

chat.

Please use these to help start your

conversations with your children after school.

What made you smile today? Can you tell me an example of kindness you saw/showed? Was there an example of unkindness? How did you respond? Does everyone have a friend at recess? What was the book about that your teacher read? What’s the word of the week? Did anyone do anything silly to make you laugh? Did anyone cry? What did you do that was creative? What is the most popular game at recess?

What was the best thing that happened today? Did you help anyone today? Did you tell anyone “thank you?” Who did you sit with at lunch? What made you laugh? Did you learn something you didn’t under-stand? Who inspired you today? What was the peak and the pit? What was your least favourite part of the day? Was anyone in your class gone today? Did you ever feel unsafe? What is something you heard that surprised you? What is something you saw that made you think? Who did you play with today? Tell me something you know today that you didn’t know yesterday. What is something that challenged you? How did someone fill your bucket today? Whose bucket did you fill? Did you like your lunch? Rate your day on a scale from 1-10. Did anyone get in trouble today? How were you brave today?

What questions did you ask at school today? Tell us your top two things from the day (before you can be excused from the dinner table!). What are you looking forward to tomorrow? What are you reading? What was the hardest rule to follow today? Teach me something I don’t know. If you could change one thing about your day, what would it be? (For older kids): Do you feel prepared for your history test?” or, “Is there anything on your find that you’d like to talk about?” (In my opinion, the key is not only the way a question is phrased but re-sponding in a supportive way.) Who did you share your snacks with at lunch? What made your teacher smile? What made her frown? What kind of person were you today? What made you feel happy? What made you feel proud? What made you feel loved? Did you learn any new words today?

What do you hope to do before school is out for the year? If you could switch seats with anyone in class, who would it be? And why? What is your least favourite part of the school building? And favourite? If you switched places with your teacher tomorrow, what would you teach the class? HUGE thanks to our writers for their awesome questions. Seriously, guys we could have 300+ questions to ask. The key here? Ask them. There’s no excuse for me not being able to get these 4 questions in – no matter how busy our day may be. Lastly, I would like to thank the Du family for their very generous donation of $500 to the school last week. ATTENTION PARENTS!!!

PaTCH VOLUNTEER COURSE

The Parents as Teachers/Community Helpers (PaTCH) course is a training program to help volunteers to learn to

support children learning to read, write and use counting in K-2.

Volunteers will complete PaTCH training by undertaking a 10

week course involving:

Participation in 5 training sessions totaling 10 hours of tuition.

A minimum of 15 hours in a K-2 classroom supporting students and completing set tasks between sessions.

Participants are required to:

Collect work samples through a learning journal. The collection will include samples of resources, photographs or recordings, short summaries of activities and

reflections.

Be observed and supported by the classroom teacher along with Ms Douglas and Mrs Vella (Instructional Leaders) or Mrs Mansour, Mrs Issa and Mrs Hasan

(Interventionists) during the in class experience.

Engage in regular discussions related to the course with

the Instructional Leaders.

The objectives of the course are for participants to:

Develop their understanding of how children learn.

Consider how children learn to talk, read and write.

Assist children to talk, read and write by listening to, talk-

ing with them about books read and stories written.

Understand the need for children to be able to link quanti-

ties with words and numerical symbols.

IF STUDENTS CHANGE SCHOOLS OR WHEN THEY GO TO HIGH SCHOOL, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO SHOW REPORTS AND NAPLAN RESULTS.


It’s 2019 and there’s no better time than the present to get back to being physically active! This year our school has a new Physical Education and Sports Teacher named Mr Tacuri and he’s super excited to help get all the wonderful students at Granville Public School super fit and healthy!

This term our students have spent their PE/Sport lessons learning the fundamental skills of

one of Australia’s most loved games: Rugby League! Students have learned how to run, pass and kick the ball, weave around players and how to evade tackles using a variety of tricky techniques.

It’s only early days but it looks like our school might have a few potential NRL players in the making!

From 1 January 2019 parents across NSW can claim and redeem their next $100 Active Kids voucher. The program runs until 2021. That means, each year, parents can access $100 per school-enrolled child to cover registration, participation and membership costs for sport, fitness and

active recreation activities.

With over 9,500 approved Active Kids providers, kids can swim, twirl, jump, kick and hurdle their way into loads of

sport and active recreation activities.

Now is the perfect time to use your voucher(s). Whether it's for scouts, martial arts, golf, or volleyball - you're sure to find an activity your kids will love! This year's voucher is valid until 31 December 2019, so kids can get active all

year-round.

be directed to the Office of Sport.

BIRTHDAYS - If your child wishes to celebrate their birthday with a cake in the classroom please speak to your child’s teacher prior to the day to arrange an appropriate time. For safety reasons knives are not permitted in classrooms, it is preferable to bring CUPCAKES.

ARRIVING LATE TO SCHOOL - Parents are reminded to accompany students to class and supply an explanation when stu-dents are arriving late to school. Notes are required by law for all absences from school within 7 days of the absence.

TOILETS - Parents, if you require the use of a TOILET, please use the toilets located in the LIBRARY.

SCHOOL CANTEEN - Please ensure that all student lunch orders are submitted to the canteen each day before 8.55am. Lunch orders will not be accepted after this time.

LOST PROPERTY - As the weather is so changeable lately, children often take jumpers and jackets off during the day. Please ensure that your child’s name is written clearly on each item of their school uniforms
