International Council for the Improvement of Reading Instruction National Association of Remedial Teachers

Merged to form the International Reading Association in 1956

1956 - First International Convention held in Chicago, IL with the theme “Better Readers for Our Times”

1958 – First International Award in Reading presented in Copenhagen, Denmark

1967 – First IRA book published: Adult-Basic Reading Instruction in the United States by David Ford and Eunice Nicholson – hundreds have been published since
