Program Notes

When I first started adapting “Alice in Winterland” I had no ideathat it was the 150th anniversary of the publication of “Alice’sAdventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll. In fact it is almost tothe day - November 26, 1865, the book was published. Carroll, whose real nme was actually Charles Lutwidge Dogson, wrote the book in 1865. The story has stood the test of time – the younggirl falling down the rabbit hole into a new world, where her adventuresinclude tea with the Mad Hatter and all the while, wanting to reach theRed Queen of Hearts. Charles Dodgson was a mathematics tutor at Christ Church,Oxford, in 1856, when he first met Alice Liddell and her siblings, whowere the children of the Dean of the college. It was this friendship withAlice and the other children that inspired the book. Alice Liddell kept the manuscript until 1928 when she was forced tosell it to pay death duties after the death of her husband. Themanuscript bounced around a bit until it was purchased by a wealthygroup of benefactors who donated the volume to the British people (andthe British museum) in 1948. Turning Alice’s “Wonderland” into our “Winterland” was a joy.Once the script was in the hands of the Sound Arts students, theyquickly brought life to their characters. We hope you enjoy ourperformance of “Alice in Winterland” as much as we have enjoyed ourtime working together!

Grand View Sound Arts reflects the philosophy of giving every childthe opportunity to experience music and performance in a fun-filledlearning environment. Musicals are specifically designed around theNational State Standards for Arts Education and the California StateStandards and Frameworks.

It never ceases to amaze me the levels of success students are ableto achieve – and after just one hour per week! This Fall was particularlytricky due to the school calendar, yet Sound Arts students took “Alice”seriously and made it their own! It has been a wonderful adventure. Each student should feel very proud of his/her accomplishments andgrowth!

Many, Many, heartfelt “thanks” to the Sound Arts Parents andFamilies who have not only helped bring Alice’s adventure to life but alsofor their constant love, support, and encouragement to these fine youngperformers! Thank you for your help with costumes and the many otherthings you have offered to allow rehearsals to flow smoothly.

Your children are truly a gift and I thank you for allowing me to spendsome musical time with them. The investment of time, effort, andenergy, will provide life-long dividends to the young people!

Please join us for refreshments following the eveningperformances!
