Grand Rapids Game Changer:50 Reasons to Ride The Rapid’s
New and Improved Route 19
Grand Rapids’ Downtown Area Shuttle - DASH - has operated in the City’s core for over 20 years. In 2017 the Mobile GR and Parking Services Department undertook a re-branding initiative to promote greater ridership. All promotional materials, new signage and map products are bilingual in English and Spanish. The re-brand coincides with other changes, including: • Expanded service area• Longer weekday span of service• New weekend services• Shared transit waiting areas with
The Rapid • Cross-promotion for fare-
free Silver Line and Route 19 subsidized by Mobile GR
The Mobile GR and Parking Services Department is partnering with the local transit authority, The Rapid, to improve stops for fixed route transit within the City of Grand Rapids.
Both organizations have identified the need to improve transit waiting environments to support and retain existing riders as well as attract new riders.
The City issued an RFP for new stop amenities that will include:• Shelters (standard & narrow)• Benches• Trash receptacles• Solar lighting• Real time arrival displays• Advertising & information panels
The City partnered with The Rapid and Spectrum Health, a major area employer, to make Route 19 - Michigan Street free for a 3-year pilot project. The project includes the following enhancements: • Service hours: increases the span
of service for the route from commute times only to an all-day service between 5:30am - 10:00pm, Monday through Friday
• Frequency: from 30 minute wait times to 10-15 minutes
• Ridership: expected to grow from less than 100 average daily riders to close to 1,000 daily riders - moving it from one of the lowest performing to highest performing routes in The Rapid system
• Coordinated improvements: improved pedestrian crossings on Michigan
