Message from the District Deputy Grand Master
Of Eastern District
Let me first thank you the Brethren of Eastern District, for all your support over the past several years, resulting in our Grand Master Investing me as the DDGM of Eastern District for the 2017-18 Masonic year. Since my Initiation in 1981 I have been involved in Masonry in three different Lodges, Worshipful Master of two and Secretary for ten years at Cardinal Lodge No. 491. The most meaningful of these years have been the last five years when I became involved in the Masonic Association of Eastern District, where I had the opportunity to work hand in hand with Masons who were dedicated to improving the good work that the Association does. Thus my theme for the year: “Pride in the District and Involvement in Your Lodge”. FREDERICK EARLE EATON
MASONIC MEMORIAL BURSARY CHARITABLE TRUST
The Trust is commonly referred to as the: Frederick Earle Eaton Masonic Memorial Bursary Fund, however the full legal name is as it appears at the top of this page.
The ”FUND” was established to honor the late R.W. Bro. Frederick Earle Eaton and to commemorate the great contribution he made to Freemasonry in Eastern District.
R.W. Bro. FREDERICK EARLE EATON:
R.W. Bro. Eaton was the Worshipful Master of Cornwall Lodge No. 125 in 1929. He was made a Life Member in 1952, and elected D.D.G.M. of Eastern District in 1946. He was the No. 1 Charter Member and first Worshipful Master of Corinthian Lodge No. 669 in 1952. He passed to the Grand Lodge Above on June 7, 1965. R.W. Bro. Eaton was a Supreme Ritualist, serving as Installing Master for Cornwall Lodge No. 125 from 1940, Corinthian Lodge No. 669 from 1952 as well as many other Lodges in the District.
HISTORY OF THE BURSARY FUND:
1963 - The Past Masters’ Association of Eastern District passed a motion to establish a Bursary Fund with a minimum Bursary of $100 for a deserving student who was a Mason or the Son or Daughter of a Mason of the District, with preference given to a student pursuing theological studies.
1967 - Application made to have the Fund registered as a Charitable Foundation.
Final approval was not obtained until November 30, 1974. Bursaries must now be made available to all qualifying applicants and not limited to Masons or those with Masonic connections. In the past few years, as many as 50% of the successful applicants have had no Masonic connections.
