The September Knight of the Month Brother Tony Toler is a dependable man we often call upon to help where needed. Seen often around the Bishop Ireton Center, Tony works two Bingo kitchens and is a member of the Charity Committee. He seldom misses any council meetings, often lending his support or suggestions to crucial issues. Tony is a member of St. Edward’s church. I am proud to announce him as Bishop Ireton Council 6189 September Knight of the Month, Brother Tony Toler. (GK David Brennan)

The September Family of the Month Members of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bill and his wife Lynn are often seen at the 8:00 Mass. Bill joined the Council in June 2006 and quickly volunteered at the BIC, even captaining a bingo team. After a brief hiatus from the Council, the first thing Bill did upon his return was to join Lynn at a Bingo game as floor worker. Both are hard working Bingo workers and true assets to their team and to the BIC. It is good to have Bill back with us and Lynn has never faltered. Lynn has served faithfully with the Ladies Auxiliary since its inception and is truly an all around asset to them and to the Knights. I am proud to announce the Bergamini family as Bishop Ireton Council 6189 Family of the Month for September 2012. (GK David Brennan)

State of BIC..

The BIC Meeting was held on August 7, 2012. WE discussed the following:

1. Most have seen the new tile flooring that has been completed in the Main Hall. It looks very nice and will be easier to clean.

2. The computer in the office has been replaced by Brother Rick DePlato and is in the process of being updated.

3. The awning sealer for the front awning to seal the holes is here. It will be applied by the BIC board members in a few weeks, weather permitting. It will be applied by both roller and brush.

4. Both the concrete and blue painting has been completed in the Blessed Mary Grotto area. The next process is painting the clouds and purchase of benches, greenery, and fountain. We already have the carpet.

All of these projects could not have been done without the aid of the bingo workers and we are grateful for all who do this for us. It is because of our volunteers that we are able to fund our charities and maintain the Bishop Ireton Center. Our facility is one of the finest in the metropolitan area and the envy of most councils. Again, our thanks and gratitude goes to all who help make this possible. (BIC President Jerry Duncan)

Just a Note…Abortion Hate can hurt. If you have been following the news lately then you are aware that once again abortion activists from both the political left and right are harping on a hot topic. Are any of these experts in that field? Probably not, but they think they are. While some of us deem the term “rape” as a pure violation of the law and should be addressed in that forum, some people always manage to say the wrong thing and “put both of their feet right into his or her mouth” whether they mean to or not. Rape and abortion are bad, that is a fact and if the mainstream media would just show photographs of aborted babies every time they print an article, Roe vs. Wade would probably be overturned. A small baby torn apart by forceps is not a pleasant picture to see. Rape on the other hand is what it is and the perpetrator should be dealt with by the fullest extent of our laws. No woman should be raped and a man that does that is the lowest “dreg of our society” and he should be punished. People, who rape, whether they are men or women, should get no sympathy! Yes, men can be raped too! As for politicians, they often say the wrong things at times and one should consider their intent. How many men understand what a woman goes through when she has been raped? Not many, I would think. And we who don’t understand are not experts in this field and should not try to comment on such but we always do and we often open our mouths and insert both feet. Our mouths get bigger and the garbage oozes out. Even our church leaders say the wrong things quite often but we seldom rake them over the coals for doing so. We all have that tendency to make a “knee-jerk” reaction. And politicians do it too!! We may not like our President and even detest his socialistic attitude and rhetoric; yet we have no control over that, except at the polls. I have a hard time agreeing with him as many like you do or don’t. However, if you don’t like the man for his values, VOTE! Don’t hate him as a man. Hate only harms you – the individual. You can hate his or my politics but certainly don’t hate the person. I voted for Kennedy, Wallace, Johnson, Carter and Nixon – and a few others. Yeah Yeah – I wasted my vote, at least in my mind, but I voted. I love elections – I get to vent!! So vote your choice and live with it. Politicians will promise you the moon. We don’t hate the doctors who perform abortions but we hate their practice of aborting babies. We don’t understand them so what do we do? You have a voice and two feet to march! The bus will be waiting for you in January to take you to Washington!! At least, as Catholics, we should hate that practice. How many babies do we have to abort to satisfy eliminating this hideous practice? How many “Little Angels” will the 4th Degree bury in Richmond? How many of these funerals have you seen? Maybe two or three - more than I have and I am sorry for that. I should do better. Pray for me!! (Buddy)

1) Kudos to Council 6189's newest 3rd Degree member, Brother Mark Eliser. Mark transferred into 6189 at the July meeting as a 1st Degree member and has taken his next two degrees in short order (8/13 and 8/18). 2) "Welcome Aboard" to Brother James Davis - he has transferred to Council 6189 in August from Council 5998 in Alexandria. Jim is retired and a Life Member 3) In response to our Worthy District Deputy to schedule 1st Degrees, Council 6189 will exemplify the 1st Degree at our business meetings in September and December, 2012 and February and May of 2013. At the present, there is one candidate from our Council and two more candidates from St Joseph's Council 12525 who have been voted in by the membership of their respective council, plus more as word advertising the Degree is spread. If you have been holding back from asking a friend of yours to join our Order, now is the time to ask him and to bring him to our Degree and meeting in September. To paraphrase a Cursillo truism - "Make a friend, be a friend, bring a friend to the Order" 4) Please make plans to come out to the Center on Saturday, September 29th, for our annual Past Grand Knight's dinner honoring immediate PGK Bruce Alt. A Grand time will be had by all as we honor Bruce and reflect on all the Past Grand Knights in attendance. If you plan to be there please RSVP to Deputy Grand Knight Jack Simila ([email protected]) to ensure you name on the attendee's list. 5) We extend a warm “welcome back” to the Ladies Auxiliary. Even though they did not hold meetings, they certainly did not take the summer off. Vivat Jesus! RS Prebish, PGK FINSEC 6189

Ladies Auxiliary News

Hello to Everyone, Summer is coming to an end. Soon vacations will be over, the weather will be cooler (thank goodness), the children will be starting school, and we will be starting our new season. Our first meeting will be Sunday, Sept. 9th at 6:30P.M. Let’s bring our stories and memories of the summer and start all refreshed and renewed. Speaking of renewed! I hope everyone has noticed the work that is being done on Mary’s garden. Clara Thompson-Agosto and Fran Craig have been working with the men of our council all summer to revamp the front hall where our statue of St. Mary stands. It is really coming together. That blue color on the wall is beautiful. Wthank you ladies for your vision and hard work. I have enjoyed watching it turn from a wonderful idea into a reality.

Early in Aug. a homeless family was stranded in the BIC parking lot. What a wonderful family they were. This couple had 12 children between 6 weeks and 14 years of age. We lost our hearts to these little ones. The Grand Knight along with several Knights went into action to meet their needs. Marty and Bob were one of the first to act getting boxes of diapers and formula. Marty was shocked to find that four were in diapers. Their van was in dire need of repair and they were desperately trying to return back home to Kentucky. The Knights, our men, came to their aid. They had the van fixed, Gene Zimmerman arraigned for lodging, and the Knigthem for three days. Well, ladies I’m happy to say that we also helped in a small way. I spent some of the auxiliary’s money and brought them pizza, soda, and apples for supper on Friday. Lynn Bergamini and Marty Prebish and I also greatly helped supply their needs with diapers, clothes and just plain moral support. They helped serve a

A Note on KOFC Insurance

Brother Knights, Fear is a central theme in many marketing campaigns for life insurance, long term care insurance, and disability insurance. This makes sense, of course exist to protect us financially from life events that can be devastating without preparation. And, for good or bad, consumers do respond to fear.

Military Retiree News… Not unexpectedly, the Pentagon’s recent calls for further significant increases in TRICARE fees for retirees — including even older retirees — have red flags going up all over the military retirement community. Where are we going with all of this? It’s still too early to tell; at this writing, Defense Department officials have not yet been called to explain or defend their plan in detail in the annual springtime budget hearings before Congress. I hate to be pessimistic, but the outlook does not look promising for retirees. Anyone who follows the news out of Washington knows that Congress failed to come up with a deficit reduction plan of its own, which means that as of this moment, $1.2 trillion in automatic, across-the-board cuts to the federal budget are scheduled to begin early in 2013. “The whole reason military people are willing to pursue a career is because after 20, 30 years of extraordinary sacrifice, there is a package commensurate with that sacrifice upon leaving service.” If the Pentagon makes changes to retiree health care and other benefits, what will be the impact on recruiting and retention? No one really knows. The initial reaction to the Pentagon’s plans for increased health care fees for retirees met with a cool reception from the Senate Budget Committee, whose members did not come out and directly oppose the plan but asked some pointed questions about the logic behind it. We’ll learn more about which way the wind is blowing over the next few weeks as hearing season cranks up on Capitol Hill. "This article originally appeared in the Military Times newspapers, a property of Gannett Government Media Corp." Stay tuned…

Bingo – always a challenge to manage…

Some Bingo Games seem to go forever; others like the St. Augustine Games struggled and eventually folded. St. Augustine closed their games on June 29. Some of those patrons have been going to St. Augustine since the first game started. That was a long time run for the church. Lack of volunteers and possibly the economic situation were contributing factors. As for our games, we continue to ask for volunteer help. Volunteering can be good, both for you and for the council. We need to think about it. Our bingo monies depend upon us to do the right thing and that is to keep the games going. If we were to hire additional help, there would be fewer monies for BIC and the Council. Which do you want?

Membership

A coordinated membership Recruitment Blitz is an all-out effort to maximize your membership teams' efforts by canvassing an entire parish on one weekend, gathering the names of prospective new members for follow-up. Talk to your parish priests and see if this can happen in your

church. We need new members and there are a lot out there just waiting to be asked. Do you have a form 100 in your pocket? PGK Earl Williams did that right. He always had a form 100 to offer a prospective member. He could be seen talking before or after a Mass with his form 100 in hand. WE can get new members – make the effort.

Bon Secours Hospital and Bliley’s Funeral home have an arrangement to provide burial services, free of charge, to families who aren't able to pay for the normal services... The next service will be October 3, 2012, Wednesday at 9:30 AM, with the Gibbons Assembly. Take the time to observe, say a prayer, and reflect on the lost lives of these little infants. Please make an effort to attend.

Well done Council #6189! On Thursday, August 2nd, a broken down old van pulled into the BIC parking lot with some very weary and desperate travelers. “Dad”, “Mom” and their 12 children (yes, 12! ranging in age from one month old to teen) were trying to return to their home state of Kentucky. “Dad” had packed up his family and drove to Virginia with a promise of employment and a new life in our commonwealth. However, upon arrival, he was told there was no job (for whatever reason). Having no other recourse, they packed up and began their journey back home. But…..that old van gave them trouble and sorely needed a repair to make it road worthy. Somehow, they showed up at BIC asking if the Knights of Columbus could lend a hand. Well……our council sprang into action without hesitation! The members available got together and helped the family pay for repairs, lodging, meals, clothing and food and gas for the road. Some of the funds came from the council’s charity fund, but some of it came from member’s generosity, too. Also, CCHASM helped out by donating several money cards. This is one fine example of our own council living out our beliefs. Jesus taught us through the scriptures that “whatsoever you do unto the least of My brothers, you do unto Me”. Jesus came to visit us at BIC that Thursday in the form of “Dad”, “Mom” and those “12 precious children”. We did not turn Him away; we helped Him! (A big thanks to all who helped get this family back home See the picture -on preceding page- GK Dave Brennan) 5
