This is the second report done on the Boundary region; the first was done in 2009. Christina Thompson, chair of the Phoenix Foundation of the Boundary Communities, welcomed approximately 50 people to the launch and introduced the 11 members of the steering committee responsible for the update over the past year. The project manager was Karly Olsen. During that year there was community con- sultation through town hall meetings and youth forums. This helped inform the creation of a sur- vey that went out in August in which citizens were asked to rate each of 11 issue areas on a five- point scale and to identify their top three priori- ties. There were 330 surveys completed; up about 100 from the 2009 survey. One of the main uses of the report is to inform the grants committee of the Phoenix Founda- tion of the Boundary Communities. According to committee chair George Longden, the local foun- dation distributed about $45,000 in 2014, and has been able to grant $387,722 in the 17 years that the foundation has been around. “This year we actually left money on the table because we didn’t have enough people apply for grants that were directed to specific endow- ments,” Longden said. “So we are looking for grant applications in all 11 of the areas of Vital Signs.” He announced a grant-writing workshop that will be held in the second or third week of Janu- ary. It is hoped that this will result in quality grant applications that fit within the areas identified in the Vital Signs report. Doug Lacey, who is the vice-president of the foundation board, explained that a day-long workshop a year ago helped shape the vision of where they wanted the foundation to be by 2018. 1949: Potato growers win world honours1909

The McBride govern-ment agreement with the Kettle Valley Line promises:• to begin construction within four months and to fi nish within four years; • to build 30 miles up the North Fork and to join Midway to Nicola; • to operate these lines continuously; • to employ no Asiatic labour; • to purchase its supplies from manufac-turers and dealers in the province; and, • to pay standard wages.1919

Bill Beach shook the dust off these parts last week and headed for the coast on his way to California, where he will hibernate with Colonel Lowery and oth-er millionaires during the cold weather. The magnate has gone off with a fairly fat sack and says he won’t be back until it’s gone.1924

Greenwood: The hospital is again becoming established here and will be known as the Greenwood and District Hospital. New furniture and equipment arrived last week.1929

Robert Forshaw of Greenwood was in town and showed quite a bit of interest in the big bill of wrestling and boxing ar-ranged by the Athletic Association, as he himself was a glove man 20 years ago.1934

The services of Jim Bush of Midway have been secured for the Comets’ hoe-down Friday night, Jim is said to be the best single-handed fi ddler west of the Great Lakes and had a front seat back east when hoedowns were invented.1939

The death of John Love at his home in Hedley, B.C. removed a pioneer among druggists in the province, and a busi-nessman widely known and highly es-

teemed. He was in Phoenix in the heyday of that mining camp a quarter century ago.1944

More than 75 per-sons were present at a meeting and en-thusiastically formed

a Ratepayers Association. Dougald McPherson was asked to be chairman and Archer Davis, secretary.1949

Two Grand Forks potato growers have won world honours at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. J.B. Markell won third place for netted gems, and Pieter Tjebbes won sixth.1954

Ella Heaven, who is well known lo-cally, will again be signing a leading role in the Rossland Light Opera Players pro-duction this year. She will have the role of Duchess in The Gondoliers.1959

Tradition was shattered at the Kam-loops Fat Stock Show this week when the grand champion award went, for the fi rst time, to a Black Angus. The animal was owned by H. Johnson of Bridesville. Re-serve grand champion went to a Hereford shown by Art Harfman, also of Bridesville.1964

The Grand Forks girls grass hockey team, under Harold McKnight, won the West Kootenay Girls Championship.1969

A contingent of young farmers, 33 strong, with more than 40 animals, earned many awards at the annual beef show held in Kamloops last week.1974

City council resolved to enter into a fi ve-year contract with BC Tel for a new 24-phone emergency telephone system for fi reman call-out.1979

Recently at the Penticton Beach Bowl, more than 350 guests gathered to honour

Kathleen Dewdney, a modest 88-year-old who was born in Midway, lived for 10 years in Greenwood, and in 1922 moved to Penticton.1984

A last minute bid by a private group of investors headed by Paul Verigin, staved off the city takeover of Parta Industries.1989

The Christina Lake Study Commit-tee, formerly the Christina Lake Restruc-ture Committee, conducted its inaugural meeting Oct. 5 with its mandate to facili-tate studies on incorporation and water and sewage systems for Christina Lake.1994

Grand Forks resident Hans Esperson won $10,000 on a British Columbia Lot-tery Corporation Bingo scratch ticket.1999

The path to Medevac certifi cation is proving a long one. Transport Canada offi cials came to Grand Forks in May to check the new system at the airport. They gave the go-ahead for private night fl ights in clear weather, but said an airport op-erations manual was required. That is with Transport Canada’s hands to review; however, the city has also just learned that they would have to satisfy requirements of NAV Canada, the agency that oversees airport traffi c controllers. There is no pro-jected date for Medevac night fl ights.2004

The Kidney Foundation’s Roundup for Research “arrested” various commu-nity members and put them in jail with a telephone and asked them to raise dona-tions as bail as a term of their release. The roundup raised $9,200.2009

Members of the Boundary Spinners and Weavers Guild donated a banner al-most one metre wide by 10 metres long to the Grand Forks Art Gallery for its permanent collection. The Peace Banner was created one strip at a time over sev-en months by hundreds of visitors to the gallery’s Heritage Centre.

Pet of the Week SassyHello, I’m Angela, thank you for choosing my little girl for the pet of the week! Her name is Sassy, she is a Bichon Shih Tzu Poodle. Sassy loves to play with her best friend. Her best friend is a cat we have, his name is Mr. Snickerdoodles. They chase each other around the yard, and they play Hide and Go Seek. When me and my brother James leave for school, and when my mom leaves for work, she gets sad so she goes and pouts in my room. She doesn’t leave until she hears me or my brother come home. The things she likes to do over the weekend are sleeping, going for walks, and spending time with her family. Sassy is so excited because it’s almost winter. She loves the winter time! She likes to play in the snow and get all snowed up before coming inside. She has these two favouirte toys, her squeaky ball and this star pillow—she has a heyday with her toys! Me and Sassy thank you for picking my babe to be the pet of the week.

How to enter your pet: It’s free. Send your digital photos, and a write-up of up to 75 words, by email to: [email protected]. Please put the words “Pet of the Week” in the subject line, and include your contact information. You can also bring in a photo to our office at 7330 2nd Street. Pets that have very recently passed away may be submitted.

New teachers welcomedThere are a lot of new fac-

es at the front of classrooms across the Boundary area in this new school year. Some have already been teaching in the area but have changed schools; others have come from far and wide, even as far as Scotland.

In Grand Forks, Hutton Elementary has a much larg-er influx of new faces. Darci Bysouth has come home to Grand Forks after many years abroad in Scotland, and is now teaching grades 4-5 and special education. Linda Frank has also made a trip, but in lesser distance as she has come from Midway El-ementary to teach grade 2-3 classes. It is not just teachers that are new to the Hutton team: Jessie McGraw is join-ing them as an educational assistant.

Linda Dolezsar has come from Walker Development Centre to be doing some spe-cial education, with Paul Stru-koff splitting his time between Walker and Hutton.

Perley Elementary also has Melissa Shaw and Mar-tin Vanlerberg, both for-

mally from Greenwood. Lisa Thatcher joins the team from Hutton, and Tara Sherstobi-toff arrives from Christina Lake. Amy Perry also is back after a year off.

Grand Forks Secondary School is seeing plenty of folks new to the district: Mar-cie Carney, a special educa-tion teacher; Erin Madsen, an English teacher; and Shannon Wolf, who will be teaching band.

Brenda Clemons, who hailed from Perley, is teaching in Christina Lake.

Among those new to their elementary students in the West Boundary schools are Robyn Grey, a veteran of Grand Forks Secondary School, now teaching grades 6-7 in Greenwood Elemen-tary (GES), as well as Jennifer Eaton, who has lived here all her life but has moved to GES after a year at Beaverdell El-ementary.

Replacing her at Beaverdell is Christopher Hayes, who has also come to the area all the way from Ontario. Erika Thorpe continues to teach at GES, but is also spending some class time at Midway Elementary.

Nicole Hecht is a fresh face

at Boundary Central Second-ary School (BCSS) teaching English 9-12. She comes from a very busy career involv-ing schooling in Montreal, Castlegar and even going to Chongqing, China to teach senior English for two years. She came back to the area (she graduated from Grand Forks Secondary) to be near her family, and loved the atmo-sphere that BCSS had to offer.

When asked what had drawn her back to the area, Jennifer Eaton remarked, “We live in a beautiful part of the world with the Kettle River meandering right through our backyard, surrounded by mountains and nature, fresh air, wildlife and the close-knit feeling that comes from small size of our communities. We have to work a little harder to entertain ourselves in a rural community but team sports, community events, and per-sonal hobbies keep my family busy. We are lucky to have a beautiful arena close by, Mt. Baldy just up the hill, and the river to swim in during the summer. My kids are lucky to be growing up in such a peaceful, safe surrounding.”

Welcome our new teachers, new friends and old.

SERVANTES

The Boundary is in for a real treat this week when Latin-flamenco-jazz guitarist Servantes brings his highly acclaimed act to town for a perfor-mance at gallery 2 in Grand Forks the evening of Sunday, Oct. 19.

Gatineau native Patrice Servant, now known as “Servantes”, began playing the guitar at the age of six. Winning every competition that he has ever entered, virtuoso Servantes has an abiding passion for his chosen art form.

He earned diplomas in classical guitar interpretation and chamber mu-sic at the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec, and studied harmony, per-cussion, composing, writing and music editing, as well as theory.

After completing two masters degrees in music and participating in many performances in numerous projects, Servantes went on to trav-el, studying Latin rhythms in Peru and Flamenco in Spain.

His music is described as “nuevo-flamenco-contemporary-jazz with funky latin grooves.”

Hailed as innovative, intense, and generous, Servantes is an artist that you won’t want to miss. You can expect to hear Servantes’ own composi-tions as well as improvisations and well known favuorites.

Hosted by Alive! Entertainment Group, Servantes’ showtime is Sunday, Oct. 19, 7:30 p.m., at gallery2.

Advance tickets available at gallery 2, Kokomo’s and Pharmasave, for $18; at the door, $20 for adults, $10 for youth.

Fire restrictions now lifted

Man shot in Slocan areaThe BC Coroners Service confirms

it is investigating the death of Peter DeGroot. DeGroot, aged 45, of Slo-can, died following a police shooting in the Slocan area on Oct. 13.

DeGroot was shot following an encounter with two RCMP Emergen-cy Response Team members which occurred about 1:45 p.m. on Oct. 13, at a remote cabin in the Slocan area.

He was deceased at the scene. The RCMP had named DeGroot

as the person for whom they were searching in the area since Oct. 9.

The BC Coroners Service investi-gates the circumstances of all sud-den and unexpected deaths in the province to establish the facts for the public record, and to determine whether there are recommenda-tions that may be made to prevent future deaths in similar circum-stances.

Open fires are once again be permitted in the entire Southeast Fire Centre, due to a de-creased risk of wildfires.

The Wildfire Management Branch is ask-ing the public to remain vigilant with any fire use, including campfires. The recent stretch of unseasonably warm and dry conditions has contributed to a “moderate” fire danger rating throughout much of the region.

There have been 286 wildfires in the South-east Fire Centre so far this season, 58 of which were caused by people. Homeowners and in-dustry personnel are encouraged to take the following precautions with any outdoor burn-ing activities:

• Ensure that enough people, water and tools are on hand to control the fire and to pre-vent it from escaping.

• Do not burn in windy conditions. The weather can change quickly and the wind may carry embers to other combustible material and start new fires.

• Create a fireguard of at least one metre

around the planned fire site by clearing away twigs, grass, leaves and other combustible ma-terial.

• If you are planning a large burn, consider conducting smaller burns around the perim-eter beforehand to create a fuel break and to help stop the fire from spreading beyond its in-tended size. Each of these fires should be kept small and must be extinguished before starting a new fire.

• Never leave a fire unattended, and make sure your fire is extinguished and the ashes are cold to the touch before you leave the area.

Anyone planning to conduct Category 3 fires or large-scale industrial burning must ob-tain a burn registration number ahead of time by calling 1-800-797-1717.

Venting conditions should always be checked before conducting an open burn. If conditions are rated “poor” or “fair”, open burning is restricted. The venting index can be found at: www.env.gov.bc.ca/epd/epdpa/venting/venting.html.

EditorialiNSIGHTyour news view

This is the first time I’ve written a col-umn during my 10 years with the Gazette, and unfortunately, it will be my last in my capacity of sales manager and associate publisher. You see, this Friday will be my last day.

A decade sounds like a very long time, but it’s amazing how the years seem to race on when you love what you do and you have a great team working along side you.

I ventured into Grand Forks in the spring of 2004 and soon adopted this wonderful community as my own. Having moved from the Lower Mainland, I appreciated the calmer lifestyle, the wide open spaces, and the warm and welcoming people who made me feel right at home.

When describing Grand Forks to any-one not familiar, I would say, “A traffic jam in Grand Forks is two cars waiting for four deer to cross the road.” They would chuck-le and marvel at how fortunate we are to live in such an idyllic area.

I’m sure that at some point during my tenure I’ve had the good fortune of meet-ing many of you. Whether it was for a Busi-ness Directory, an annual In Memoriam or weekly display ad, I’ve enjoyed working with each and every one of you. Many wonderful friendships resulted from of our dealings together; friendships that I will cherish.

As I turn the page to the next chapter of my life, I won’t say goodbye but rather, “See you soon.” – Chris Hammett

HOW TO REACH US

And that’s where I am now!

I was trying to get some work done the other day. Sometimes that’s downright difficult—writer’s block is the term that a lot of people use for it.

All I had written down on the word processor so far was, “The one in my imagination is always better.” After that there was a blinking cursor, but nothing else. And nothing else was coming either.

That little phrase about my imagination was supposed to act as a catalyst that would cause the words to flow across the page in such rapid succes-sion that the column would be finished in no time flat.

But flat was all I was com-ing up with and time wasn’t exactly on my side. Ugly fac-tors like deadlines and pro-

duction people who know where I live were making for a stressful morning. The prob-lem was I’d written that little insightful gem a few days be-fore and, for the life of me, I couldn’t remember what the dickens I was thinking about when I had jotted it down. There was no context.

It was like the time I’d made the following note to myself in my notebook, “Sec-ond Tuesday – 4 p.m.” There wasn’t anything to hint at what the event was or where it was happening. (Ed. Note: I still don’t know what happens on the second Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m.; so if you can enlighten me please do so.)

So this wasn’t exactly writ-er’s block—it was more like writer’s wall. One that I’d built for myself.

Heard some great writ-ing tips from Avi Silberstein, librarian at the Grand Forks and District Public Library, last month. He was in Midway doing a book tour for his first

novel, Human Solutions, which is an excellent read by the way. He explained how he was able to finish his novel in only four months.

“I wrote five days a week—not necessarily Monday to Fri-day but I had to write five days per week,” Silberstein said. “I had to write 750 words a day, whether that took an hour or four hours, that was the rule.”

So basically it was just a matter of mathematics. It sure sounded easy enough when he said it. So the only thing for it is to press on: type one word behind the next and see what comes of it.

You have to admire the energy and enthusiasm that was shown by the people who came out for the inaugural meeting of the Midway and Beyond Little Theatre Group last week.

I was going to try to qual-ify that sentence. I thought I should expand it a bit to let you know how many people attended. I considered saying

that 20 odd people attended—but I tossed that phrase away for obvious reasons.

And if I’d written that “20 something people showed up” you might have thought they were all young, and that certainly wasn’t the case. Some were younger, however, and the meeting was unusual in that respect—it was multi-generational.

So I just left it at the fact they had a meeting. That’s the thing about writing for a newspaper—it doesn’t have to be exact, but it really helps if it’s accurate.

Another thing about writ-ing for the newspaper–if you write enough words you get to the end of the page—and that’s where I was trying to imagine myself when I started this ramble.

And that’s where I am now. Imagine that!

Happy belated turkey day to all; and remember— grati-tude is always in season.

Opinion

Letters to the editor Truly transitioningThere is a world of difference between what is happening in Grand Forks

and the transitioning that is taking place in over 1,000 diverse communities around the world. The difference is in what these communities are transi-tioning away from and what they are transitioning toward.

In the status quo world, control of what happens rests with the people in society who are willing to risk investing in an enterprise already underway, creat-ing subdivisions or opening a business. Until the worldwide recession in 2008 the approach worked well, a lot of money changed hands and growth occurred.

In a transition town, the control over what happens rests with the residents. They decide what initiatives are needed and how they can be brought to fruition.

What is a true ‘transition” initiative? Definitions can be found on the Transition Network and a couple taken from a couple essays clearly show how different they are from what happened in the past. “It’s a place where there’s a community-led process that helps that town/village/neighbour-hood become stronger and happier.” It “...is a community-led response to the pressures of climate change, fossil fuel depletion and increasingly eco-nomic contraction.”

The key words in these statements are “community-led” and that is not what is happening in Grand Forks with the exception of the work of the Grand Forks and Boundary Regional Agricultural Society (GFBRAS) where people engaged in food production have begun to work cooperatively. The work of the trails society may be another.

A key component in the transition movement is the recognition of climate change as a reality and that the future should not include high consumption of fossil fuels.

The city’s approach appears at odds with true transition. People entering Grand Forks from the west now see a sign on the flat below Spencer Hill. “Grand Forks is open for business. Call the mayor.” A similar message ap-peared on a sign on the west entrance to Chilliwack over 30 years ago.

Following are a couple paragraphs from the recently published “Grand Forks is Open for Business!” The booklet is clear about what the city would like to see happen:

• “The city aims to grow and strengthen the business community in Grand Forks through business retention, expansion and attraction.”

• “Whether your industry is tourism, retail, agriculture, arts, recreation, forestry or manufacturing, Grand Forks offers a wealth of opportunities for your business. The city is competitive in its cost of doing business and offers tax incentives for business in the community.”

It is stated in the booklet that the city will facilitate the planning and de-velopment permitting process for new businesses; assist investors in identi-fying business opportunities; and provide community statistics and demo-graphics.

What if the city sign said, “Grand Forks is in transition. Join us as we plan our future”?

Residents of Grand Forks should have a say in what their future will be and they can do so by planning and designing workable transition initia-tives with the understanding that the city will facilitate their work in the same way it has promised to help outsiders who want to invest in the city in some way. Restoring the wetland that runs through the city or creating solar parks are examples of initiatives that have promise.

Transition initiatives become catalysts in the community for projects that will lead to strong local livelihoods and a reduced dependence on fossil fu-els. The objective is the creation of a resilient and healthy place to live.

Leaving the control of our future community to outsiders—the investors and the developers—who are constantly on the prowl looking for opportu-nities to realize a good return on their investments is more risky today than ever before.

Imagine living in a place that thrives because people are involved in making it what it is. Having a significant influence on a transitioning Grand Forks would indeed be a rewarding experience.

Why is silent majority punished?Editor, The Gazette:

With regard to last week’s letter to you entitled “Why Punish Everyone”, it seems to me that if “everyone” is using as little water as they seem to think, surely their water bill will go down.

However, why is the silent majority pun-ished with these endless letters, many with political plugs within the content?

Water meters can affect seniors

Bike symbols are dangerous

There are other ways of farming

Editor, The Gazette:After reading the letter to the editor in the

Grand Forks Gazette by Don Lea and doing some checking on my own, I will not be get-ting an RF water meter installed in my home and I will have a sign posted on my property to the effect: “Attention: Do not install a wa-ter meter of any kind. This is a medical risk to me.”

I will provide a letter from my doctor to this effect and if installation proceeds in spite of this, I will take legal action against the City

of Grand Forks. As a further precaution on the part of the city and because of the distance these frequencies are capable of being read at, the residences on either side of me and across the lane to the north should also be put on hold for installations.

There is ample evidence that these meters can affect seniors and especially those with pacemakers (as is my case) and certain indi-viduals.

Stan Halluk,Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette:An open letter to city council. When I saw the signs that 68th Street was

undergoing repaving, I was very pleased and thankful. Now that the job appears to have been completed, I feel very disappointed and angry.

Why has the pavement not been extended to include a proper bicycle lane, and why on earth are there bicycle symbols painted clearly on the side of a single lane road? The road looks like it is supposed to be a bike route, but there is no room to safely accom-modate a bike!

The only way that this scenario could work safely is if the road was only open to smart cars, scooters and motorcycles, as well as bicycles.

The bicycle symbols are not only confus-ing, they are dangerous— promoting a false sense of security to cyclists, who are told that they are supposed to be there, on the side, but clearly cars cannot pass them safely without crossing the middle lane.

If this was simply a matter of telling the citizens of Grand Forks to “share the road,” that is one thing. In that case, some “share the road” signs on the side of the road would have clearly conveyed that message. The large bicycle symbols send a mixed message to cyclists and drivers. It is an invitation for a conflict, as you have created an unsafe envi-ronment for cyclists and drivers to co-exist.

I have ridden on bike routes in big cities and small towns all across North America, and in parts of Europe, and I never seen any-thing like this. Bike routes should be intuitive for both cyclist and drivers. As it stands, I would tell my kids to ride on the sidewalk instead of your “bike route.” The painted bike symbols create a false sense of security, and I suggest the city remove them immediately or extend the road to include a real bike lane, with a proper division line painted clearly the whole length of the road.

I sincerely hope no one gets hurt!Astrid Kihl,

committed to clean air for Canadians.” If this is true, make Canada a “spray-free country.”

Does this mean now your government will pay for six months hotel for us living near spray areas, so we and all our animals can be away from spray areas and breath clean air? I still smell the poisons sprayed in the area from last spring.

How will we survive if more crops are destroyed and our air and drinking water is poisoned?

Farm crops and household gardens are being destroyed because of pesticides and herbicides used in Canada. The implications of pesticide use are profound for humans and the ecosys-tems. In 1962, Rachael Carson wrote Silent Spring, where she recognized the widespread use of pesticides was having on birds, bees and nature.

There are other safe ways of fanning and weed control than poisons. It is time they were promoted.

Gladys Brown,Midway, B.C.

Editor, The Gazette:We are currently facing two pivotal moments

in public education in British Columbia.Firstly, we have just ended a lengthy strike that

will bring five years of labour stability and an op-portunity to rebuild relationships and strengthen our education system. Over the past several months there has been a focus on what was wrong with the system rather than what is right.

Now is the time to shift that focus back to what we all have in common—success for stu-dents. British Columbia has one of the best edu-cation systems in the world because of fabulous teachers, administrators and support staff.

Yes, there are still challenges to overcome. There will always be a need for increased funding and staffing. But our education sys-tem should not be defined by the challenges. It should be defined by our willingness and ability to work together to overcome them.

Success is a team effort and it is now time for us to once again work together as a team.

The second pivotal moment will occur on Nov. 15, the date of local trustee and municipal elections in British Columbia. On this day you will have an opportunity to elect the women and men who will lead and oversee public education in your community. School trustees working in their communities with education partners and parents provide focus and direc-tion to help realize the educational aspirations of students throughout the province.

Public education is everyone’s business. It is the engine that will determine the success of our province. Our future employees, leaders, parents and citizens will come from today’s classrooms. Nov. 15 is your opportunity to select the individuals in your community who will advocate for that future, and who will deter-mine the directions to guide this critical public investment.

Public education is always exciting and challenging in British Columbia. When I see students in our classrooms supported by dedi-cated teachers, administrators support staff, and trustees, I see the future.

Working together with a clear focus on what is best for student ensures that the future will be bright.

Focus on what’s best for students

B e i n g a library and all, l e n d i n g t h i n g s out is our speciality. Which is why this Halloween we’ve decided to put out our bins of costumes and let you dig through them. Once you find the right one, you can borrow it for all your Halloween fun!

The big day is Saturday, Oct. 18, from 2 - 3:30 p.m. Drop by and see what you can find (and at this point, we only have kids costumes – sorry, parents).

Christina LakeWe have new hours for our Christina Lake

service on Wednesdays – we will now be at the Living Arts Centre from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Poetry CaféOur very own Grand Forks Writers’ Guild

will be hosting their always-popular Poetry Café on Thursday, October 16 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. It’s an open mic opportunity to read/re-cite your own poetry or someone else’s. Every-one is welcome!

Bears and Electric FencingJust a reminder that Gillian Saunders

(Granby Wilderness Society) and Laurie Grant (WildSafeBC) will be giving a presentation and hands-on demo on setting up electric fenc-ing on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 10:30 a.m.

ChickensWhether you’ve been keeping chickens for

decades, or are interested in getting started, you’ll want to come to our informal conver-sation on all things chickens—to be held on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. Lego Land

Yes, we know, you just can’t get enough of our Lego! We’ll be bringing the bins out on Friday, Oct. 24 from 2 - 3:30 p.m. All ages wel-come (children ages seven and under must be accompanied by an adult). Grant Lawrence

And last, but most definitely not least, the award-winning author and CBC celebrity Grant Lawrence will be here on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. – last time he was here, there was standing room only, so be sure to arrive early! And as a bonus, the talented musician Jill Bar-ber will be here too with a performance.

Poetry CaféThursday

The Grand Forks Writers Guild presents the second Poetry Café of 2014 on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Grand Forks and District Public Library.

It will be the 14th café held at the library, and everyone is invited, from students to se-niors, to read aloud poems written by their favourite poets, or poems they have written themselves. You are also welcome to come and be part of the audience, and enjoy the refresh-ments graciously provided by the library.

One hour has never been long enough for the event, so this year we’re starting at 6 p.m. See you tomorrow!

October can be a time of worry and painOctober—it’s a time

of leaves dancing to the ground; a time of ripe red apples and bright orange pumpkins; a time of the rapid patter of small feet coupled with young voices call-ing: “trick-or-treat!;” a time of stores filled with Halloween can-dy and early Christmas treats.

But if you’re hungry, if you can’t put a nutritious meal on the table for your family or heat your home appropriately or fight off a virus, then October is also a time for worry and for pain. Worry about paying bills, about retaining health, about the approach of Christmas.

And pain—hunger hurts! It hurts

emotionally, espe-cially when you have children affected by it. And it hurts physi-cally, when there’s never quite enough to satisfy the gnawing in your stomach or when bumps and bruises

take longer to heal and even a simple cold can be debilitating.

But, October is also a time of Thanks-giving. Giving thanks. I would like to take this time to give thanks for everyone in our communities who helps in the bat-tle against hunger. Whispers of Hope for their Community Kitchen, Blessings Bou-tique & More for the emergency hampers they supply and the meals they serve

through their programs, and Boundary Family and Individual Services Society for the food vouchers they distribute.

I give thanks for every single person, organization or company that donates food or money or who provides special pricing to the Boundary Community Food Bank and all of the volunteers at the food bank who devote so much of their time to helping provide food for our cli-ents.

I especially would like to give thanks for the members of our community who use our services (255 people in Sep-tember). I am humbled by the ability of so many of them to remain optimistic, friendly and thankful themselves while dealing with their own pain and worries. They are indeed an inspiration.

Please help us continue to give them something to be truly thankful for. Dona-tion bins can be found in Overwaitea, Ex-tra Foods and Buy-Low Foods.

Donations can be brought to the food bank (7419 2nd St., Grand Forks) on Mondays from 1 – 2:30 p.m. or Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. or mailed to us at Boundary Community Food Bank, Box 1052, Grand Forks, B.C. V0H 1H0.

If you have questions about our needs you can also leave a message at 250-442-2800.

Yes, Hunger Matters, but if we all work together we can help ease the wor-ry and the pain and lessen the matter of hunger.

CITY ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO BOOK FOR WATER METER INSTALLATION

Grand Forks, BC – More than 500 residential water meters have been installed as part of the Universal Water Meter Program and the City of Grand Forks continues to encourage resi-dents to book their appointment for installation to receive a free water meter.

Grand Forks resident Dave Milton was rst in line in early September for his water meter and believes the program is a must for the city.

“It concerns me that residents in Grand Forks each use so much water every, much more than the BC and Canadian average. I think some of that is lost through leaks but too much water is wasted,” says Milton.

“I believe that residential water meters will swing things the other way and help us conserve more of this precious resource.”

Milton says the installation process took less than an hour and “they were prompt and friendly and e cient.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing just how much water I use. My electricity is on a meter and so is natural gas. Water should be no di erent,” he adds.

Since September 3 when the program started, more than 500 meters have been installed. Mayor Brian Taylor is pleased with the support to date and encourages residents to book an appointment for an installation as soon as possible. The City plans to have all indoor meters installed by the end of December 2014.

“We’ve had lots of positive feedback since the installation began in early September. We do recognize it’s a new program and people may still have questions. Both City sta and Neptune representatives are always available to help and answer any of those questions,” he says.

Residential water meters not only encourage conservation and allow for billing equity, but will defer the need to spend millions of dollars to upgrade the City’s water infrastructure such as pipes and reservoirs. The average Grand Forks resident uses more than 720 litres of water per day. Taylor says that’s not factories and commercial businesses — that’s people in their homes.

Taylor stresses that it’s important to book an appointment and get a meter installed inside the home, as starting in the spring of 2015, the City and Neptune will begin installing pit meters at the curbside of properties where homeowners opted out of having a meter installed inside their home.

“There is a cost associated with having a pit meter installed, which is approximately $2,500. We would much prefer that everyone take the opportunity for a free installation inside the home before the end of December,” says Taylor.

For more information on the water meter installation program and to book an appointment, please visit www.grandforks.ca.

THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF GRAND FORKS

PUBLIC NOTICEThe City assures its residents that it adheres to all legal requirements and legislation in its business and operations. In the case of water meter installation, the City complies explicitly with the BC Plumbing code and the BC Building code. A Certified Water Meter Installer is used to install the meter, which meets the requirements of both the BC Plumbing and BC Building codes as well as the City’s contract with Neptune Technology. The City is committed to providing the best service and quality of instal-lation possible. A journeyman plumber is used for quality control and to undertake spot inspections periodically as a quality control measure. The water meters are read by a mobile radio read unit and data is stored in a software program. Neptune’s water meter technology is used in hospitals across Canada and Health Canada has concluded that exposure to RF energy from these meters does not pose a health risk. As Neptune’s Radio Frequency meters are used in hospitals, homeowners can rest assured that the low frequency of the water meters poses no threat to any medical devices. The City thanks all residents for participating in the water meter installation program! We encourage residents who have any questions or concerns regarding water meter installation to contact the City directly in order for us to address them accurately.

included an update of the 2009 report. Another major piece of the new strategic plan is the goal of growing their investment fund to $1.8 million.

Olsen said the updated plan cost in the neighbourhood of $31,000; with $10,000 of that from a Newman’s Own Foundation grant sponsored by Grand Forks Buy-Low Foods. The City of Grand Forks sponsored a Healthy Communities grant application that brought in another $5,000. The Phoenix Foundation kicked in another $10,000 and the balance came from other local sources.

In May 2014, 83 youth aged 15-18 years, participated in Vital Signs youth forums in the East and West Boundary. They rated the 11 issue areas on a five-point scale and identified strengths and areas of improvement. Work, transportation, arts and culture and learning all received ratings of poor by the youth forums.

Of the eleven issue areas work was rated as the first priority by the citizens. The report suggested that one of the best ways to help the local employment situation is to buy local.

“At the most basic level when you shop local, money stays in the com-munity,” said the report. “This helps create more jobs, reduces environ-mental impact and invests in the community.”

The community’s second priority is health and wellness, with anxiety and depression identified by 30 per cent of survey respondents as their top priority for further improving health and wellness in the Boundary. That was closely followed by the number of physicians per capita (28 per cent).

The third citizen priority is the gap between rich and poor. According to the report, 33 per cent of residents in the West Boundary live in low-income households.

The other eight key issues covered by the report are Arts and Culture, Housing, Transportation, Learning, Belonging and Leadership, Environ-ment, Safety and Food Security.

Olsen explained, “The last report was used by the Phoenix Foundation to direct their grants, by various community agencies like the Boundary Family and Individual Services Society and the school district to make de-cisions about programming.

“We don’t view the report as the end,” Olsen said in an interview after the launch. “This is the beginning of spurring citizens into action and con-vening around these issues. That’s really where we are going in the next five years.”

The regular meeting of the Sacred Heart Catholic Wom-en’s League is held first Thurs-day of every month, beginning in September after the summer break.

The Nelson Diocesan execu-tive ladies held their fall ex-ecutive meeting in September in the Sacred Heart church hall, catered to by the CWL ladies. There were 18 out of 27 coun-cils present. Diocesan presi-dent Janet O’Flynn chaired the meeting.

As to business rising from the Oliver convention which

was held in May, it was sug-gested that the Diocesan con-vention should be in one cen-tral location and held every second year.

It was also suggested that they get interesting speakers for the convention.

The next Diocesan conven-tion will be held in Trail in 2015.

Janet O’Flynn thanked the Grand Forks ladies for the lovely dinner and luncheons.

WRAP (White Ribbon Against Pronography) cam-paign will be held the last week in October. The ribbon of signatures campaign is a sim-ple way to teach our communi-ties about the “Age of Consent

Law,” and collect signatures to demand changes for the pro-tection of children.

Miles of ribbons contain-ing hundreds of thousands of signatures will send a strong message to the members of parliament that Canadians are demanding a change to the Age of Consent Law. Watch for the ribbon and please sign it to show your support.

This month, happy birthday wishes go out to Mikey Per-kins.

Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make out souls blossom. Mar-cel Proust.

Cullen gets Eagle’s NestThe golf season is slowly

winding down but there is still a lot of good golfing left. The greens have been punched, sanded and waiting for the putters; the course is in good shape. Fall is a great season to be out on the fairways and greens.

The Ladies Tuesday league was out on Oct. 7 and it was a beautiful day to be golfing. The game played was Match Play and two teams were randomly put -biter.

On Wednesday, Oct. 8 the men played regular golf. In the 0-9 handicap, John Dedels shot a 37 (retro) for low gross and Ian Turner shot a 33.5 for low net.

Mark McEwan played the low gross with a 38 and Jesse Tarasoff played the low net with a 34.5 in the 10-15 handi-cap. With a 42, Dennis Flanagan got the low gross and with a 34, Jim Kastrukoff got the low met, in the 16 and over handicap. Closest to the pin on #5 was Bill Gamble (0-10 hcp), Bill Duff (11-15) and Wayne Peterson (16 and over). Longest drive on #7 was

Craig Wilson (0-10 hcp), Duane Panter (11-15) and Wayne Pe-terson (16 and over). Larry Cul-len was closest to the pin on #9 overall.

Larry Cullen also got the Eagle’s Nest on #9—that is, he was within five feet of the pin. Not many of those shots have been seen this year. Good golf, Larry.

Heads up, on Oct. 18 the game will be Deep Freeze and on Oct. 19 the game will be Tombstone.

A report was not received for the Retirees Golf and there was no Thursday Ladies game.

Bicyclist offers adviceAntoine Longieras, 36, of Volvic, France, cycled through Grand Forks recently. Longieras landed at the Montreal airport on June 21 and had cycled 6,200 kilometres when he stopped to regroup before heading to the Cascade border crossing on his way to warmer climes for the winter. In France he had worked as a “gar-dener for butterflies” but felt the time was right for a long journey—he plans on being away a year and a half, a trip that will end in Patagonia. His reason, his advice for others: try life at 15 km/h instead of 150 km/h. “It relaxes my brain. For me, it’s the best thing to, to discover a country and the people who live there.” Della Mallette photo

Students run in Fox’s nameOver 300 students came together to take part in the Terry Fox Run.

Even after the late start and teacher’s strike, elementary schools from across the Bound-ary were still able to rally and celebrate the annual Marathon of Hope in Terry Fox’s honour.

From setting up stage equip-ment for the event to shaking every student and teachers’ hand, the ever-busy Principal Brian Foy helped wrangle in schools from all across the dis-trict, from Rock Creek to Chris-

tina Lake to partake in the run which was held at the Midway arena on Oct. 8.

“The district has been coming together for about seven years,” said Foy, “[The Terry Fox Run] rotates around the district where the run is going to be held. Each school takes a chance to cele-brate it… Midway is a beautiful sight, and it’s in the middle, and has a beautiful trail.”

The district hopes to break records this year. “We [School District 51] have put together really strong fundraising, col-

lecting pledges for the run; we’re excited that this year we may break our record.”

Children and teens made a strong appearance, totaling over 300 students. Elementary school students took the podi-um, telling Terry Fox’s story, as well as what it meant to them.

After, a very upbeat warm-up routine with lunges, punch-es and thumping music, the kids were ready to make the trek, in memory and in solidar-ity of those who are fi ghting cancer.

Bruins ‘didn’t show up to play’

The Grand Forks Border Bruins went to Fernie last Fri-day night to face off against the Ghostriders. But according to coach Bruin Brad Snyder, “They spent all day on the bus and just didn’t show up to play at all. They beat us pretty good on Friday night.”

The Bruins were clearly out-gunned: 48 shots on goal for Fernie and only 20 for Grand Forks. According to the box-score, goaltender Jacob Mullen made 39 saves on 45 attempts in regulation time.

Max Newton got the lone Bruin goal; Lincoln Lane the as-sist. Newton was also singled out as second game star. Pen-alty killing was 100 per cent for both teams—the Ghostriders shut down the on three power plays. Fernie was blanked in their lone attempt.

On Saturday night, Mullen continued strong in goal when the Bruins came home to take on the Creston Thunder Cats. He stopped 52 of 55 shots on goal on home ice.

“We played vey well against them,” Snyder commented.

Bryson Yee scored the single Grand Forks goal; with assists from Lane and Newton.

The Bruins had 25 shots on goal and fi rst game star went to goalie Mullen. Grand Forks went 0 for 2 on the power play; the Thunder Cats 0 for 5.

On Sunday the team played to a 5-5 draw against the Rev-elstoke Grizzlies. “We were up twice by two goals in the sec-ond period but they kept com-ing back and we ended up in overtime,” Snyder said in an interview the following day.

The Bruins offense picked up the pace—shots on goal were 45 for the Bruins and 49 from Rev-elstoke. With two goals and an

assist, the fi rst game star went to Kyle Doak.

Grand Forks went 1 for 3 on the power play; the Grizzlies 1 for 5.

Newton scored two goals and Steele Anderson got a goal and an assist. Michell Pearson and Michael Rand each had two assists; with Graham Wat-kins, Reid Peterson, Lane and Bryson Yee contributing one as-sist each.

Snyder said the team would take a couple of days off over Thanksgiving for everybody to heal up and then get back to ac-tion.

The next home game at Jack Goddard Memorial Arena in Grand Forks won’t be until Fri-day, Oct. 24 when the Nelson Leafs come to town.

This Saturday the Bruins travel to Castlegar to meet the Rebels and on Sunday they go down to Spokane to take on the Braves at the Eagles Ice Arena.

Mary Margaret‘Diane’

BiernaskieApril 17, 1943 –

Sept 19, 2014In Penticton, B.C. on Sept

19, 2014 Diane Bieranskie, M.B. passed away at the Andy Mogg

Hospice House after losing her battle with breast cancer at the age of 71.

Diane will be lovingly remembered by her family: daughter Jenifer Brock; ex-husband John Brock and then later David Biernaskie; sister Sharon Yurcich; brother Ron Carpenter; and all of the Carpenter and Brock fam-ily members, and her many caring friends. Her younger brother Bob Carpenter passed away in 2011.

Born in Perth, Ontario, as one of four children to F/L Key & Areta Carpenter. She married John Brock in 1966. Their daughter Jennifer was born in 1970. In 1973 Diane became one of the fi rst 15 women to join the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police). In 1974 she was awarded the Metal of Bravery by the Governor General of Canada, for her act of heroism in the face of danger.

After leaving Ontario and moving to B.C. in 1993, Di-ane settled into the Osoyoos area and was soon known as a productive REALTOR© with the South Okanagan Real Estate Board. Her entire real estate career between Ontario and B.C. spanned over 28 years.

Diane loved animals and rescued many dogs, horses and other ‘critters’. Her whole purpose for living in the country was to help those four legged furry friends who needed her help. And she was happiest when she was with them on her ranch in the Sidley Mountain area.

Jennifer and friends want to thank all the staff of the Andy Moog Hospice House for their loving care of Diane in her fi nal days that she spent there.

Memorial Service: Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Christopher’s Anglican Church in Osoyoos. Gathering of Remembrance: Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1:00 p.m. at the Community Hall in Bridesville. In lieu of fl owers, dona-tions may be made to the BC Cancer Society for Breast Cancer or the SPCA in Penticton. iliary is very grateful to the communi-ties of Christina Lake and Grand Forks for supporting their three summer fund raising events.

The funds generated from the Home-coming Weekend Bake Sale, the New to You Sale, and a raffl e allowed the aux-iliary to provide much needed medical equipment to the Boundary Hospital that included Staxi wheelchairs and a slave cardiac monitor.

The winners of the raffl e were Kev-in Green of Christina Lake for the fi rst

prize of two nights with meals at the Blaylock Mansion in Nelson, and Brit-tany Merry of Grand Forks, for the sec-ond prize of a Patio Boat Trip for 14 on Christina Lake donated by Dan Powell of Christina Lake Marina.

The auxiliary’s next fundraiser is their very popular annual Christmas tea to be held on Saturday, Nov. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Christina Lake Community Hall.

Those who attend enjoy not only sip-ping tea and socializing, but also partici-pating in a silent auction, bake sale and door prizes.

Website encourages women to take stepsThanks to research and new treat-

ments for breast cancer, more women are surviving, and thriving, than ever before. But it’s also important for wom-en to know that they can take steps to

reduce their risk of getting this type of cancer.

B.C.’s leading cancer organizations have joined forces to create Five Plus (www.fi veplusbc.ca), a new website that

encourages women to take fi ve steps that may help to prevent breast cancer, plus two actions for possible early detection:

Five:

1. Maintain a healthy body weight.

2. Maintain an active lifestyle.

3. Limit alcohol consump-tion.

4. Breastfeed if possible.5. Weigh the risks and

benefi ts of hormone therapy.

Plus:1. Be aware of the look and feel of

your breasts so you notice any changes.2. Book a mammogram every two

years if you are between the ages of 50 to74. Mammograms for women age 40-49 or over 74 can also be considered. Talk to your doctor.

The Five Plus actions are based on

current research and were developed by a team of B.C.’s foremost experts in breast health. The website, www.fi ve-plusbc.ca, contains detailed information about how these fi ve risk factors affect breast health and how best to detect breast cancer early.

GIT ER GROUND!‘

A Grand Forks Fire/Rescue truck was out and about last Wednesday, but not for an emergency: it was in honour of Fire Prevention Week. The fire department assisted Panago in a promotion that delivered pizza to lucky customers’ doors and having their smoke alarms checked. Firefighters Dave Paulett (left) and Dave Squarebriggs checked alarms for James Ebanks (at left holding pizza) and his family, and for Ron Flosser (photo right). They all passed inspection but the point made is that working smoke alarms save lives. Gazette staff photo
