    Introduction

In addition to this instructional page, the following worksheets are contained within this package (links below take you to those worksheets):

(where raw data obtained from grain size analysis is entered and processed)(where grain size histograms are processed and plotted)(Where ternary plots are generated)

    Data Input Page

Data Input:Histograms:Tern. Plot:Don't Touch: (Where the ternary plot triange is generated. Don't touch this page!

This series of worksheets was designed to process grain size analyses derived using the pipette and sieve method (Coventry and Fett, 1979). For details about the methodology of this technique, please refer to Haywick (1996).

Data entered into the Data Input page will automatically be shunted to the other worksheets where necessary. To access those worksheets, click the tab buttons below. Each worksheet is pre-formated to print on North American standard pages (8.5 x 11 inches). To change to page size (e.g., to A4), use page set up.

Sediment classification according to Folk or others, is determined by using a transparent template atop the ternary plot (Haywick, 1996). These data can be added manually to the Data Input page if desired.

Record all of your data in the spaces provided on the raw data component of the page. Do not enter data into the calculations component of this worksheet. Save the file after you have entered the data. The blank spreadsheet may have been a "read-only" file. You may be prompted to enter a new file name before your data can be saved.

Check the data calculation component of this page for any negative values in the Bulk Grain Size or Histogram calculation columns. Negative values here usually indicate an input error on the Raw Data section of the worksheet. Common errors include missing decimal points, transposed numbers and blank entries.

This worksheet consists of 10 separate histograms that are formatted to fit on three 8.5 x 11 inch pages in landscape mode. If you are doing less than 10 samples, some of the histograms will print out without data. Empty histograms can be deleted from the worksheet before printing.

To print a single histogram, highlight it and hit the print button in the Standard Excel toolbar (usually at the top of the page).

One of the most important ways of graphically representing grain size data is via ternary plots. Unfortunately, Excel does not have a ternary plot module within its standard software package. The ternary plot comprising the third of the worksheets in this package was obtained from other sources. I have modified it to use the data collected from this method of grain size analysis, but I do not claim authorship of this spreadsheet. See the Tri-Plot section below for details about where this stuff came from.

I do not recommend fooling around with this page. You do, however, have the ability to; 1: turn on (or off) some of the plot lines on the ternary diagram2: vary the interval (number) of plot lines on the ternary diagram and,3: modify the printer correction factor (this affects the output shape of the ternary diagram)

There are some other ternary plot routines available through either commercial software (e.g., DeltaGraph), or through shareware.

This page comprises the guts of the ternary plot routine and should not be messed with unless you want to plot different information.

I obtained the ternary plot module of this worksheek package from colleagues on the SedNet News Group. The original authours of the worksheet are David Graham (originally at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth) and Nicholas Midgley (Liverpool John Moores University). The grain size plot represents one portion of their Tri-Plot spreadsheet.

  • Citation Information

I believe in free discimination of information and permit use and/or modification of this series of worksheets by any non-commerical organization or individual pursuing scientific enquiry. It is my understanding that David Graham and Midgley also feel this way (The original spreadsheet contained the following text: "Users are free to modify and distribute TRI-PLOT provided the original source is referenced in any modified version").

If you have borrowed the Tri-Plot component of this worksheet, please contact David Graham and/or cite Graham and Midgley (see reference below). If you are using this worksheet package for grain size analysis, please cite:
