PRODUCTION Graduation and Retention (or Triangle Report or Completion and Persistence) and Time to Degree official reports are produced in the fall semester. This report showsthe cohort numbers per starting period, University wide retention/persistence rates and University wide graduation/completion rates for approximately ten years. TheUniversity wide retention and graduation rates are available for specified new student cohorts (defined on the next page) who started at the University or by the Col-lege, Department, or area of study they entered into. The Graduation and Retention and Time to Degree Reports follow the methodology for enrollment and degree reporting established by the the Texas Higher Educa-tion Coordinating Board (THECB) for the CBM-001 and CBM-009 report. For complete list of CBM definitions and methodology, please refer to the most current edi-tion of Public Universities' Reporting Manual, available at the following link: <http://www.txhighereddata.org/index.cfm?objectId=3874B639-B8B5-1533-24CEAC194113B058> APPROXIMATE AVAILABILITY Within 4-6 weeks of the certification of CBM-001 and CBM-009, due annually October 1st and 15th, released by the department of Institutional Effectiveness and Re-porting. SUMMARY Graduation and Retention provides a summarized overview of the university wide graduation and retention rates for specific fall cohorts. Common cohort groups aredefined on the following page, but they are also defined by the number of students entering the university, college/school, department, or area of study that they hadwhen they first started at the University of Texas at Arlington. Persistence numbers and rates are determined from enrollment in courses at UTA (regardless of aca-demic plan or "Major" changes) during subsequent fall sessions. Therefore, regardless of area of study, the retention rate of any given cohort group from any givenarea will be calculated based upon whether they took state funded courses during subsequent fall sessions. Graduation rates/numbers are cumulative, and are calcu-lated by determining if the students receive a degree at the same cohort level at UTA, regardless of area of study at entrance, during or before subsequent fall ses-sions. Time to degree takes the degrees awarded for each year and calculates how long it took for the degreed students to obtain their degree. Therefore, it is not an enter-ing cohort as used in graduation and retention calculations, but the time it took the group of graduates with a particular degree from a degree academic year to obtainthat degree. At this time, only students reported to the Texas Higher Education Coordination Board (THECB) in the CBM-001 are included in the cohort and retention and also timeto degree data. Graduation rates of reported students are based upon students reported as receiving a degree in the CBM-009 and therefore to THECB. UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
Definitions: Most definitions can be found in the Public Universities’ current Reporting Manual (found here: ). Below are brief descriptions of the items. First Time in College (FTIC) cohort: See the CBM Reporting manual Item 9 in the CBM-001. These include degree seeking undergraduate students who are starting col-lege for the first time post-secondary education. Fall cohorts include summer starting, fall enrolled FTIC students. FTIC include all classes of students (not only fresh-men) to ensure that students who take college courses while in high school are included. Full-Time or Part-Time: UTA adopts a default rule of 12-9-9 (undergraduate-Master's-Doctoral) versus the 15-12-9. This means that undergraduate students (both first-baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate) must be enrolled a minimum of 12 credit hours to be considered full-time. Graduate students (Master's and Doctoral) must be en-rolled at UTA as a minimum of 9 credit hours that session in order to be considered to be considered full-time. All students not meeting the 12-9-9 rule will be consideredpart-time. Graduated and/or Completed: the number of students from the original cohort for that group/year who graduated with their first degree at UTA at that level (undergradu-ate, masters, doctoral), regardless of degree area, before or during the subsequent fall sessions. Note: students who start in a particular academic area and obtain a de-gree in a different area are still included as graduated/completed for the original area of study. E.g., if the graduation and retention report was created for chemistry doc-toral students, and one of the original cohort students received a Ph.D. in biology and not chemistry, the student will still be considered degreed and included in the re-port as graduated/completed. Graduation and/or Completion Rate: The percent of students who are counted Graduated or Completed (see above for a definition of graduated or completed) Doctoral-Doctoral Bound cohort: students enrolled in an academic plan that is at the level of doctoral. This includes doctoral plans and doctoral bound plans. Doctoral Bound: Students Master's cohort: Any student starting in a Master's level plan, excluding students pursuing a doctoral bound, certificate and spec degree. Part-time: Please see Full-time or Part-Time above. Retained or Persisted: the number of students from the original cohort in question who are enrolled in the same level plan (undergraduate, masters, doctoral) in any de-partment at UTA in subsequent fall sessions/years. Note: students who start in a particular academic area and switch to a different area, yet are enrolled in courses forthat fall session, are still included as Retained or Persisted for the original area of study. E.g., if the graduation and retention report was created for chemistry doctoral students, and one of the original cohort students switches to another academic PhD area (say, biology), the student will still be considered degreed and included in the report as retained or persisted. Retention and/or Persistence Rate: the percentage of students from the original cohort who are considered retained or persisted (see above for the definition). Notes: Pertinent caveats to the data may be provided below each report.
