“Sooner or later we all discover that the important moments in life are not the advertised ones, not the birthdays, the graduations, the weddings, not the great goals achieved. The real milestones are less prepossessing. They come to the door of memory unannounced, stray dogs that amble in, sniff around a bit and simply never leave. Our lives are measured by these.”

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our dark-ness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

~Marianne Williamson, A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of “A Course in Miracles,” 1992 (commonly misattributed to Nelson Mandela, 1994 inauguration speech)

Congratulations to all the Graduates!Congratulations to all the Graduates!

Many of this year’s high school graduates will be leaving home for a college campus in the fall. Such a departure is often bittersweet for kids and parents alike. Young men and women typically look forward to the freedom and indepen-dence that college life can provide, but those same men and women know they will miss the familiarity of home as well. Parents, too, have mixed emotions when kids head to college, as their sadness over a child leaving home is met with the pride they feel that the child they raised is setting out to make their own way in the world.Few moments in life involve

such significant change as the moment when a young man or woman first arrives on a college campus. First-year college students often don’t know what to expect once they arrive on campus, but there are steps parents can take to help their kids prepare for college life.* Teach kids how to sched-

ule their time. One of the things many college kids find once they arrive on campus is that their life is suddenly much less structured and their amount of downtime has increased considerably. Unlike high school, which keeps many kids in class or involved in extracurricular activities from the early morning through the late afternoon, college affords students much more free time, which is theirs to use as they see fit. Some kids dive right into on-campus activi-ties, while others struggle to use their free time to their advantage.

Parents can teach time management skills such as how to establish a sched-ule so all of that free time does not go to waste. This schedule can be adjusted on a weekly basis depending on coursework or extracur-ricular activities. Once kids learn to manage their time effectively, including using breaks between classes to review notes from a recent lecture or upcoming class, they’re likely to get the most out of themselves academi-cally and find they have more time to pursue extracurricu-lar activities as well.* Discuss finances and

establish a financial arrange-ment. Many college fresh-men struggle to manage their money. Some might never have had a job during high school while others who did work only did so to earn spending money. But many college students need more than spending money once they reach campus. Rising tuition costs have made it difficult, if not impossible, for parents to bankroll their kids’ everyday expenses. As a result, many college stu-dents find themselves forced to manage their own money for the first time in their lives. Parents can teach simple fi-nancial lessons, such as the benefits of buying groceries as opposed to dining out or ordering in each night. College is also where many

young men and women first sign up for a credit card. Par-ents can teach their kids the basics of managing credit, such as the benefit of paying off a balance before interest rates kick in and the nega-tive ramifications of missing

payments. Parents who can afford to

provide financial support for their children enrolled in college should reach a financial agreement with their children before they are off to college. Make sure kids know your financial support does not mean they have un-limited access to your funds, and make it known that such support will not continue if kids aren’t performing well in the classroom.* Encourage kids to contact

any roommates before the school year begins. Part of the trepidation many kids have when leaving for col-lege concerns how they may or may not develop a relationship with their new roommate. Many schools assign roommates months in advance of the school year, giving kids ample time to make contact and make arrangements about whom is going to bring certain items, such as a television or coffee pot or even furniture if the room can fit any. Parents should encourage such con-tact so kids can get a feel of who they will be living with and lay the groundwork for a friendship before they even step foot on campus. The feeling of knowing some-one on campus can greatly reduce the anxiety many kids feel when they arrive at school for their freshmen orientation. The day a student leaves

for college is a significant day for parents and students alike. Parents can take a number of steps to make the transition to college easier for their college-bound son or daughter.

How to help students prepare for college life

Parents of college-bound youngsters can help their kids prepare for such a significant life adjustment so kids are better equipped the handle both their academic and social lives.

Things to look for in an internshipCollege students typically

clamor for internships. An opportunity to gain on-the-job experience while still in college, an internship looks great on a resume and, in some instances, can lead to an offer of employment upon graduation. But not all internships are

equal. College students might be enthusiastic when landing an internship, only to find out once the opportunity begins that they will be doing little more than fetching coffee and not gaining valuable ex-perience they can use down the road. In other instances, however, an internship can be all a student expects and more, providing hands-on experience in a student’s desired field and maybe even earning the student a few dollars along the way. When it comes to finding

an internship, there are a few things college students can

look for to determine if the opportunity is the right fit.• Companies that let interns

and employees grow: Nowa-days it’s easy to get a grasp of the culture within a certain company. Social network-ing sites such as LinkedIn™ and Facebook® can paint a pretty accurate picture of a company’s environment. An environment that allows its employees to learn on the job and grow with the com-pany might be more ideal for interns than a company with a less nurturing environment. In addition, some companies list information about their employees on their Web site, including how they started with the company and how long they have been there. A company with a roster of long-term employees is likely one where people like to work, an important thing for you to consider.• Potential experience: An

internship looks good on a resume, but college students should seek out an internship that allows them to gain valu-able experience. An intern-ship at a renowned law firm might boost a resume, but if you spend all of your time in the mailroom or fetching coffee then that internship will not necessarily serve you very well. Look for an internship that provides you with an array of experiences within your field. A good internship won’t involve you doing the same thing every day. Instead, it should allow you to try various tasks over the course of your summer or semester with the company. This will give you a more accurate depiction of the in-dustry, while allowing you to list more experiences on your resume. When interviewing for an internship, ask about the specific tasks and respon-sibilities you’ll be entrusted

with. The more, the better.• Value and relevance: The

great thing about an intern-ship is it gives college students the chance to get a glimpse of their potential field prior to graduation. After completing an internship, some students reconsider their course of study, while others grow even more committed. But when looking for an internship, look for one that is relevant to your current course of study. It’s alright to change afterward, but the internship should be one wherein you can apply the lessons you’ve learned and gain practical experience to complement those lessons. Avoid accepting an internship that has nothing to do with your course of study, as it’s not likely to help you after graduation.• Impact on your future:

College students pursue internships because of the role an internship can play in their future. An internship can not only provide valu-able experience, but also it’s a chance to get your foot in the door with a company that you might want to work for after you graduate. When interviewing for an intern-ship, ask about the potential for turning an internship into full-time employment. Some companies enable this transi-tion by allowing successful interns to work on an hourly basis during the school year after they have completed their internships. Others admit they look to previous interns first when entry-level positions become available. A company that wants its interns to eventually become full-time employees is one that can have a significant impact on your future. The right internship provides interns with a wide range of hands-on experience.

As overseas production operations return to the United States, enrollment in trade schools continues to rise. Despite high levels of unemployment, domestic manufacturing companies are finding it difficult to fill positions, thanks in part to an attitudinal shift over the years wherein young people did not consider manufacturing a respectable or attractive trade.Such attitudes are starting to

change, as indicated by the surging enrollment at trade schools. The Dunwoody

College of Technology in Minneapolis, for example, is experiencing its highest enrollment in years, with students young and old look-ing to take advantage of the growing number of available manufacturing positions. Thanks to high demand, the school has even introduced a six-month certificate program for the first time in its history. Many manufacturers have

bemoaned the lack of quali-fied machinists to fill posi-tions, and those manufac-turers are emphasizing that today’s machinists must be

computer literate and be skilled in computer-aided design and engineering. That increased demand for skilled workers has driven up their wages. In fact, a 2012 study from Georgetown Univer-sity’s Center for Education and the Workforce noted that 63 percent of workers with associate’s degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering or manufacturing earned more money than the average person with a bachelor’s degree in the hu-manities or social sciences. As trade schools continue

to benefit from the return of manufacturing jobs, recent college graduates continue to find a job market that is less than welcoming. Analysis of government data for the Associated Press found that in early 2012 half of recent college graduates were either unemployed or underem-ployed (working in positions unrelated to their degree).Such a reality has been ad-

vantageous to trade schools, which have become an in-creasingly attractive option for the masses of unemployed men and women.

When asked to list re-nowned classical compos-ers, Mozart or Beethoven may come to mind. Many people may not think to mention Edward Elgar. But there’s an excellent chance thousands of people are very familiar with the most famous work by Elgar. “Pomp and Circumstance”

is undoubtedly Elgar’s big-gest claim to fame. It has be-come the standard to which many soon-to-be graduates proceed into their gradu-ation ceremonies, both in high school and college. As

such, it has become one of the most recognized concert marches. The song – the trio section

of the first march in a series written by Elgar – was not written with the intention of being a graduation proces-sional. Elgar built up his reputa-

tion as a composer of works for great choral festivals throughout England. In 1901, Elgar began compos-ing five marches that would be named “Pomp and Cir-cumstance Marches.” He is perhaps best known for the

first of the marches, which went on to be simply named, “Pomp and Circumstance,” or “The Graduation March.” Since 1905, it has been used at virtually all high school and university graduations in America. The first time “Pomp and

Circumstance” was played in a graduation setting was when Elgar received an honorary Doctorate from Yale University in 1905. At the end of the ceremony, the march was performed as recessional music. It was so well received that

it was soon expected to be played during gradua-tion ceremonies at many other prominent schools. Today it is rare to hear “The Graduation March” played outside of commencement ceremonies. Many graduates have fond

memories of hearing “Pomp and Circumstance” at their school commencement, even remembering the exact moment they received their degrees. For those attending a graduation ceremony in the near future, expect to hear this powerful march.

Interesting beginning for “Pomp and Circumstance”
