Interior Design BA (Hons) Negotiated Major Project Brief Title: Nutrition through interior design office Academic Yr 13-‐14
Level 6 Name
Mikaella Constantinou Credits 40
Duration 12 weeks
Introduction Nutrition is about having a good and healthy life. Both women and men any all ages should visit even once in their life a nutritionist. By walking into a good environmentally office, the atmosphere must be relaxing and pleasant for every client. The atmosphere for some of the offices exists, is not so friendly and that does not always attracts people into going in. The Concept This brief outlines a Nutritionist’s Office name Marilia Constantinou, a young nutritionist starting her career and work, in which both the old and the young can visit for a better future. Everyone can come to the office to learn about the food they eat and what is right and healthy to eat. Previous nutritionist’s offices have shown that not enough people visit them. The middle aged and old people must go especially for health reasons and be careful about their daily nutrition, because it is very dangerous for heart diseases and obesity. There are different types of food and diets for each individual person. We are what we eat, that is why people have to know about the consequences they could face. Studies have shown that most of people do not know what is right and what is wrong to eat and have never visited a nutritionist. The nutritionist’s office will be based in Nicosia, Cyprus. The office exists and started working in 2012 with a good design but not perfect. Cyprus does not have a high population compared to the United Kingdom. My purpose is to design a relaxing environment creating an exciting place for people to feel comfortable and change their psychology in terms of wanting to visit again. The office has to be practical and sustainability matters to the interior design of it.
Location The chosen building is located in the town centre of Nicosia. The address is: 62 Andrea Demetriou Street, Strovolos 2025, Nicosia, Cyprus. The building is an apartment building, which are different kind of offices. The area is very suitable, because of its location; there is not enough traffic, it’s quiet and attracts people to go in because of the building. Cyprus is an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The third largest and third most populous island in the Mediterranean, and a member state of the European Union. It is located east of Greece, south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel and north of Egypt. The total population of Cyprus as of the end of 2006 is slightly over 1 million, comprising 789,300 in the territory controlled by the government of the Republic of Cyprus and 265,100 in Northern Cyprus. The population of Northern Cyprus includes some 150,000-‐160,000 Turkish immigrants who are regarded as "illegal settlers" by the Republic of Cyprus government and are not included in the population statistics of the Republic of Cyprus Statistical Service. Building Analysis Built about 50 years ago or more and designed by Petros Vasileiou and exterior of the building was recently renovated. It started with a small budget and was not so good before, it was old and that is why it got renovated now. The interior of the office is now good, concrete walls, a lot of light, enough windows, wooden floors, reception area, three rooms, a kitchen and two bathrooms. Before the office was done, the space was empty. The aim of this project is to redesign the office and make it perfect for the clients and the nutritionist who works in. The Vision The vision is to create a space, which will attract everyone with a positive result and improve his or her health. The building is attractive from the outside for people to see it and want to go in. In the reception area will be the reception desk, nutrition pictures on the walls, chairs for the clients to sit, a coffee table, magazines and books for people to read while they are waiting to see the nutritionist, pots of flowers to give a relaxing environment. In the office area will be the desk, furniture, bookcase, wall paintings etc. A friendly space for people not to feel stressed, but good about their selves. Design Requirements
The main parts to the design are: reception area, the office and maybe the kitchen. The reception area should be exciting and peaceful, because that matters to the client’s feelings. The nutritionist must have some food products to explain the client how the diet should be. The nutritionist must offer the customer something to drink through the kitchen that is how the office has two doors. One that people come in through the reception area and one that the nutritionist could go into the hall and have access to the kitchen and the other rooms. The design needs to be modern and has great bright colours, created in a way that any person walks in should be enthusiastic. By walking in, the area must be understood that you are into a nutritionist office. Ambiance Nothing is more important than the design of the area. It must be professional and nice to draw people in. Everyone is welcome in. A simple design though is always better. The furniture and decoration should be modern with relaxing colours, but also kind of “strict”. Sustainability and Green Issues Sustainability is the key of a healthy and eco-‐friendly environment. The materials of the office must be compared correctly and cheap. Also, it is a positive thing if they are sustainable. Access There is one door to enter into the building. An elevator (people with difficulty walking issues) and concrete stairs to go in the offices. The office is located on the second floor. People can access to the building by car or by bus. Opposite the building there is a huge car park. In Cyprus there aren’t any train stations. How success will be measured The success will come easily on how the brief will respond to the final design and how practical and simple will be. The quality of the planning, good decoration and details with a result of making it improved. A well-‐off presentation must attract people’s attention by visit a nutritionist. Creating a great interior design into the office and the right decoration. Outline Activities:

Negotiated Major Project is designed to allow students to synthesise their experiences on the course through the definition, negotiation and implementation of a self-‐directed programme of design investigation, research and development leading to the presentation of a major design project. Students are encouraged to identify an issue or set of issues around which to focus their design investigation. The primary responsibility for the implementation of the project lies with the student, who will be assessed on their capacity to undertake a detailed examination of the territory they have identified as being of personal significance. Effectively, this Negotiated study provides a framework through which the student is able to demonstrate a capacity to practice and their understanding of the particular contextual circumstances in which they operate.
Module Learning outcomes (from MS1) Aims of Module:
• facilitate the synthesis of design practice within its contextual framework • provide an opportunity for students to take responsibility for the negotiation, management and
implementation of a major project • enable students to produce a coherent body of work culminating in a major project. • enable students to explore possible areas of concern which may be relevant to their practice after graduation.
On completion of this module the student should be able to:
• To demonstrate a high level of skills and understanding in relation to their chosen area of design practice • To generate, organise and evaluate an extended body of design work • To appreciate the role of presentation in the production of meaning • To support their design practice in an appropriate and articulate manner.
To produce an effective, creative, appropriate, detailed and clearly communicated and presented design solution to a complex

Dear C.Papaleontiou,
RE: request for you to act as my external mentor for my Final Major Project
I am a third year university design student at the point of embarking and
designing my Final Major Project. This significant project represents the positive
result of 3 years of creative practice, which has involved the completion of 14
individual design projects, one-practice placements and a series of written
essays, dissertation and critical issues in Design.
The core theme of my major project is redesigning a nutritionist office to reach
the perfection. My aim is to make the place look perfect, suitable for the
nutritionist and friendly for the clients. As you are an expert in the field of interior
design it is highly inspiring to myself, who desires decent work in this area. It
would be very important and an honour to me if you could agree to take part and
cooperate in my final major project as an external mentor.
This cooperation would be a massive process for me to achieve the best, using
your professional knowledge and experience that you can offer, the quality of the
design thinking and general quality of process. Your interior and realistic world
shall deliver and serve as a datum by which I can gauge the relevance and
professionalism of my creative practice during this project. It is hoped shall prove
to be an enjoyable and suitably interesting experience for you.
The major project plan is divided into 4 distinct phases with a result of present
the negatives and positives of each stage to you. Arranging meetings at your
convenience on each occasion. As time passes, the project will be developed
and available on my personal website.

experience in the real world of interior design, collaborated with many popular
offices and important people, not only on the levels of interior but also exterior
design.
Short written statement In my research I have mentioned a lot of everything. Redesigning a
young woman’s nutritionist office is more that I was expecting. Going
through her world to learn about nutrition so that I could pick the
right and suitable environment for herself and her clients.
My purpose was to research some of the areas in the world of
nutrition such as the work of a nutritionist, the difference between
them and dieticians, how often people visit a nutritionist, why is it
good to visit them, the reason of why people go for and how long they
stay, what is a Mediterranean diet, what are figures of obesity in
Cyprus compared to United Kingdom and why they are dissimilar,
statistics of diet related illness in Greece, a research on some general
offices and finally analyze methods through case studies and my own
questionnaires.
Doing and using surveys with several questions about nutritionist
and interior design of any spaces, comparing their answers and
making pie charts to see the results, were a great opportunity for me
to understand much better how and what people want the design of
an office be like.
