Graduate research award announced A $1000 award to be known as the Victor K. LaMer Award for graduate research in colloid and surface chem- istry has been announced by Egon Matijevic, chairman of the ACS Di- vision of Colloid and Surface Chem- istry. "This award will be given for graduate research and is in this regard unique among the ACS awards," said Dr. Matijevic. The first award will be presented at the 44th National Colloid Sym- posium at Lehigh University, Bethle- hem, Pa., in June 1970. It will be based on an outstanding Ph.D. thesis accepted by a U.S. or Canadian uni- versity during the three years prior to Feb. 1, 1970. Nominations may be made by the thesis supervisor or any- one familiar with the nominee's work. Criteria normally accepted in eval- uating scientific work such as orig- inality, significance, quality, and quan- tity will be considered in reviewing nominations. Copies of the thesis and preprints or reprints of any papers based on the thesis as well as bio- graphical information about the nom- inee is required. The judges are ex- pected to pay special attention to contributions to the research made by the student as distinct from those of the supervisory professor. The an- nouncement of the award also indi- cated that the potential and promise of the student as a future investigator will be considered. Additional information about the first of future awards is available from Prof. Frederick M. Fowkes, Depart- ment of Chemistry, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa. 18015.
